The new airport opened on the 17th September 2016, so it is not even a month old in this view. In true Ashgabat style it was built with no expense spared and can be easily argued to the excess; with a maximum annual capacity of 14 million passengers but only serving ~1.5 million passengers (about 28 flights a day). With the relatively difficult visa entry requirements, regional instability and a country population of only around 5 million it is unlikely it will reach capacity anytime soon.
Having said that it is rather attractive inside and out and the lack of passengers and commerce makes for a relatively stress free airport experience!

Il Turkmenistan si rese indipendente dall’Unione Sovietica nel 1991, ma i metodi di governo non cambiarono. Il primo presidente (1991-2006), che prese il nome di Turkmenbahi (Capo dei turkmeni), era un tipo simpatico: si fece costruire una statua d’oro che girava in modo da essere sempre rivolta vero il sole… E, tanto per dirne solo un’altra, cambiò il nome ai giorni ed ai mesi: aprile divenne Gurbansoltan, il nome di sua madre. La megalomania del successore (Gurbanguly) non è stata da meno e così, con il resto del paese rimasto arretrato, Asgabat, la capitale, ha certificato "Il Guinnes dei Primati", è la città con più facciate in marmo per metro quadro al mondo (marmo di Carrara naturalmente). Asgabat è una città fantasma: enormi palazzi in marmo vuoti, strade anche a otto corsie senza auto, enormi marciapiedi senza pedoni, fontane ovunque (e siamo in pieno deserto).
Kunya-Urgench: è il luogo in cui sorgeva l'antica città di Urgench (XII sec.) capitale del regno di Corasmia. Le sue rovine non sono ancora state studiate, ma dal 2005 sono protette dall'UNESCO che le ha classificate Patrimonio dell'Umanità.
Today's exotic visitor arriving from Joint Base Andrews for a fuel stop en-route to Ashgabat. Believed to be carrying part of the Turkmenistan delegation which attended the 10th C5+1 summit (5 Central Asia Countries plus USA) at the White House yesterday evening.
