Asher is looking at (you might be able to tell) the intersection of American music and incarceration, using five case studies: Leadbelly, Elmo Hope, Johnny Cash, Ike White, and Tupac Shakur. Naturally it's not an exhaustive study of the entire intersection, and he acknowledges it, but I finished the section on Leadbelly and it was very good. Along the way he made mention of a wide variety of musicians with similar or completely different experiences. Yes, I might have liked to see more than a name drop on Merle Haggard, but it's his book not mine. Good so far.
Kind of updating this as I go along... The third section is on Johnny Cash, and it's a good profile. For the theme, it centers on his two live albums recorded in prisons, as well as the talent he found from the prisoners there, his feelings about incarceration... and it also contrasts the light touch he received from the law for his transgressions vs those of other African American musicians who'd run afoul - - imagining not just how they might have fared under the lighter touch Cash received, but also what we would have lost had Cash been dealt with as they had been.
It's timely reading, since the last section is on Tupac Shakur, just as the trial for his murder is getting underway.
I'm wrapping this up now, but it's intense, and human, and thought provoking. A+.
