This indoor tennis court may be one of the oldest in the United States. It is a wood clapboard structure with massive 3ft thick and ten foot high foundation walls. A magnificent steel truss system supports the roof and is punctuated by 3 skylights over a clay court. A nearby stone wall has the date "1907" carved into it and early survey plans by Brinley & Holbrook in 1917 clearly identify it as a "tennis house" It predates the Raquet and Tennis Club in New York City, built in 1918 and JP Morgan's 1929 indoor tennis building on Jekyl Island which shares similar design elements. Area residents, not-for-profits and preservationists are interested in restoring this as a functioning indoor tennis court for community use in Westchester. The USTA headquarters in Westchester may prove a terrific resource for faciliating preservation and restoration.

I had just been futilely searching for a covered bridge in Oglethorpe County, and gave up. There are at least four Georgia covered bridges that fall into that category. They all are not clearly marked, and cell service is not always great. But, this one was well marked. It serves as the entrance to a state park. I returned five years later, having found the elusive Howard’s Bridge about twenty minutes earlier. www.lostbridges.org/details.aspx?id=GA/10-97-01&loc=n

RMD Kwikform has supplied a specialist truss system to complete works on the redevelopment of Birmingham New Street train station, also known as the New Street Gateway Project for Network Rail.

From Wikipedia:

The Humpback Covered Bridge located in the U.S. state of Virginia, is one of the only remaining covered bridges in the United States that was built higher in the middle than on either end; hence the name of "humpback". The bridge was built in 1857 and is also the oldest remaining covered bridge in the state of Virginia. Its WGCB number is 46-03-01. The bridge spans a tributary of the Jackson River known as Dunlap Creek, for a distance of 109 feet (33 m). The humpback feature is 4 feet (1.2 m) higher in the center than at either end. The bridge is located near the city of Covington, Virginia.

Three bridges stood at approximately the same location as Humpback Covered Bridge does today. The first bridge was built in the 1820s and was destroyed by a flood in 1837. A second bridge built the next year was also damaged beyond repair by a flood on July 13, 1842. The third bridge collapsed in 1856 due to heavy use and fatigue from weathering. None of these earlier bridges were either arched or covered. All three bridges were a part of the James River and Kanawha Turnpike, a heavily used mountain road that connected the Shenandoah Valley with the Alleghany Mountains and areas further west. The current bridge was built in 1857 and the design of both covering and also arching the bridge was hoped to increase the longevity of the bridge by protecting the midsection from future floods and the decking from the ravaging effects of moisture and sunlight.

The Humpback Covered Bridge was used from 1857 to 1929, when a steel truss bridge was built for U.S. Highway 60 immediately to the north. The bridge was abandoned but was sometimes used by a local farmer into the early 1950s to store hay bales. In 1953, the Virginia Highway Department matched a $5,000 fund that had been raised by the Covington Business and Professional Women's Club and the Covington Chamber of Commerce. Five acres surrounding the bridge were purchased and a small wayside park which opened in 1954 was built, allowing easier access. On October 1, 1969, the bridge was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Most covered bridges were made of the strongest readily available wood. In the case of the Humpback Covered Bridge, this meant white oak and hickory. The bridge, as it stands today, has most of the original hand-hewn support timbers and decking that was laid down in 1857, however, most of the walls and roofing have been replaced several times since. Bridge decking was traditionally constructed of wide planks a foot (30.5 cm) or more in width and 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) in thickness. Most of the support beams are at least a foot thick (30.5 cm). The supports in the bridge utilized hand made honey locust wood pins to fasten sections of the supports together. The supports incorporate a unique curved multiple kingpost-truss system that is not found in any other surviving wooden bridge in the U.S. The bridge is an original and completely unique design not duplicated anywhere else.

620 Beatty Street, Vancouver, BC.

Description of Historic Place:

Located in urban East Vancouver, the Beatty Street Armoury is a massive, low-massed symmetrically composed structure. The main entrance is a central troop door guarded by towers. Constructed of brick, its battlements and rounded towers convey a strong image of solidity and impregnability. The designation is confined to the footprint of the building.

Heritage Value:

The Beatty Street Armoury is a Recognized Federal Heritage Building because of its historical associations, and its architectural and environmental values.

Historical Value:

Constructed as the regimental headquarters for the local militia, the Beatty Street Armoury is closely associated with the building campaign undertaken in conjunction with the development of the Active Volunteer Militia during the period preceding the First World War. During the First World War, the structure functioned as both training and recruitment centres.

Architectural Value:

The Beatty Street Armoury is a very good example of an armoury that expresses its military purpose with a style evocative of a medieval castle. Its functional design, and the very large floor space, a result of the overhead Fink truss system, are also distinguishing characteristics. Its many medieval features display excellent craftsmanship.

Environmental Value:

The Beatty Street Armoury is an important and familiar local landmark in downtown Vancouver and is compatible with the present character of the area.

Character-Defining Elements:

The character-defining elements of the Beatty Street Armoury should be respected, for example:

Its medieval style using good quality materials and craftsmanship, for example:

- The large scale, symmetrical, low-massed structure composed of the head house and large drill hall.

- The grand troop door, flanked by projecting three-storey crenellated towers in the manner of fortress architecture.

- The regularly spaced flat and round-arched windows and flat roofs.

- The rough-faced stone at basement level, the pressed brick of the walls, and the stone detailing in the form of stringcourses, lintels, voussoirs and copings.

- The large unobstructed space of the central drill hall.

The manner in which the Beatty Street Armoury is a familiar community landmark as evidenced by:

- Its prominent downtown setting where it occupies a large site.

- Its distinctive military design which is readily identified by the community.

One of the most picturesque state parks in Georgia, Watson Mill Bridge contains the longest covered bridge in the state, spanning 229 feet across the South Fork River. Built in 1885 by Washington (W.W.) King, son of freed slave and famous covered-bridge builder Horace King, the bridge is supported by a town lattice truss system held firmly together with wooden pins. At one time, Georgia had more than 200 covered bridges; today, less than 20 remain.

The park is an ideal spot for an afternoon picnic or overnight stay in the quiet campground. Hiking, biking and horseback riding trails allow visitors to enjoy the thick forest and river. During summer, visitors often play in the cool river shoals just below the bridge. Watson Mill Bridge has become a popular destination for horse owners who have their own camping area near stalls.

The William C. and Anna Krueger Barn was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on June 20, 2023. Photographs by SHPO staff August 2021.

The Krueger Barn in Pembrook Township, Edmunds County, was built c.1904. The dairy barn has a gambrel roof with side lean-tos, animal pens with wood feed racks, milking parlor and a bottle feeding/weaned calves’ area, and a Shawver truss system roof.

William Krueger's father Charles Wilhelm Krueger had emigrated from Germany to Wisconsin in 1867 with his first wife Caroline. After her death, he married Emelia Hinkelmann. The family moved to Edmunds County by 1887. In c.1907, son William married Anna Potensia Lundquiste. Their oldest son Lewis took over the farm c.1934. In 1935, Lewis married Evelyn Cora Boyle (1916-2007). According to their son, during the 1930s, Lewis received loans through the New Deal to help purchase seed and feed for the farm. They also supplemented income by trapping and selling muskrats, minks, coyotes, and foxes as the furs prices held throughout that period.

The barn served a few different functions for the cattle that the Krueger’s had. From the milking, they would bring the cream north about four miles to Wetonka, McPherson County, to leave at the depot. The center aisle is flanked by multiple pens on either side for mothers and their calves while the northern lean-to would be used as a storm shelter for the whole herd during extreme winter weather conditions. Along with raising cattle and hay, the Kruegers also raised sheep, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, and guinea fowl throughout the years. Childhood memories include dances held up in the barn’s haymow. Most often, the musical entertainment would be provided by a local man with an accordion and refreshments would be sold out of his uncle’s truck.

The African American Methodist community in Galveston dates to 1848, when Gail Borden deeded land on Broadway for a salve church. Following the Civil War, the congregation changed its affiliation from Methodist Episcopal Church, South, to the African Methodist Episcopal denomination. The church became known in 1867 as Reedy Chapel A.M.E., forerunner of A.M.E. churches throughout Texas. St. Paul M.E. Church split from Reedy Chapel, and in 1868 the St. Paul group divided, with one group buying property on Broadway and 38th Streets and becoming Wesley Tabernacle Church.

The new congregation changed locations and sanctuaries, starting with a one-room house later moved to a new site at Avenue I (Sealy) and 28th in 1870. The church added buildings later destroyed in an 1879 fire. A new wood frame sanctuary, severely damaged in the 1900 hurricane, was rebuilt by John Tankersley and an African American carpentry crew. The façade changed again in 1924 when the Galveston grade raising reached this neighborhood. Houston architectural firm Stowe and Stowe and builder Henry H. Lasden built a new red brick façade with white stone detailing.

Wesley Tabernacle United Methodist Church Marker image. Click for full size.

The building features a prominent corner tower, bracketed tower cap and twin bracketed porch canopies, mixing elements of Gothic Revival and Craftsman style architecture. Interior features include a unique hand-hewn structural truss system intact from renovations following the 1900 storm. Pews and altar furniture date from the 1881 sanctuary. Wesley Tabernacle United Methodist Church has long been involved in social progress for the African American community it serves. Members have promoted civil rights for many years, including organization of the first anti-lynching society in Texas in 1914.

"On April 12, 1887, with Florida a part of the United States, the old Spanish structure burned once again, but the coquina blocks and cement masonry of the exterior was still salvageable. Reconstruction was begun with donations from Henry Flagler and funds raised in a national appeal. The congregation hired the visiting New York City architect James Renwick, Jr., who rebuilt and enlarged the church with a rectangular-cruciform layout and a European-style transept.

Renwick devised an elegant roof truss system that exposed the decorated timbers, and he added a Spanish Renaissance-style bell tower, its exposed bell typical of older Spanish mission churches in the west. Four bells were placed in the tower, one salvaged from a previous church and inscribed: "Sancte Joseph. Ora Pro Nobis. D 1682."; another taken from a British cathedral."

The William H. Kessler House is a one-story residence with fully glazed curtain walls on the front and rear elevations and brick masonry side walls. The house, which is roughly square in plan, has a distinctive three-bay, folded-plate roof and a tall brick garden wall that screens the transparent façade from the street. Constructed in 1959, the Kessler home is a notable example of Modern residential architecture designed by William H. Kessler for himself and his family. The glass window walls are supported by a thin steel frame and the glazing is extended up into the gables producing a dramatic effect and enhancing the modern aesthetic. The folded-plate roof is comprised of 4” thick structural wood decking eliminating the need for an exposed truss system. The buff brick garden wall at the front of the house encloses a linear courtyard along the primary elevation. The northwest and southeast-facing side walls are clad with buff brick capped with a wood fascia set just below the roofline. The house’s main entrance is located in the center of the southeast elevation. A flat roof extends over the entry to a small rectangular storage shed clad with vertical wood boards. To the north of the storage shed is a two-vehicle carport with a flat roof that was designed by Kessler and added in 1964.

The William and Margot (Walbreaker) Kessler House is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places under Criteria B and C at the state level as a notable example of the Modern Movement and for its association with architect William Kessler. The Kessler House was designed by Harvard-trained architect William H. Kessler for himself and his family in the early stages of his career, a few years after establishing an architectural practice with Philip J. Meathe and Harry Smith in 1955 (Meathe, Kessler & Associates). Built in 1959, the Kessler House possesses significance in the category of Architecture as an innovative residential design exhibiting the fundamental characteristics of the Modern Movement including its simple geometric form, use of large expanses of glass to bring nature and sunlight into the interior, and its open and free-flowing floor plan. The house is also distinctive for its folded-plate roof supported on a thin steel frame and the incorporation of a brick screen wall on the primary street-facing façade. Despite Kessler’s intention to live and work in Michigan for only a few years, he remained in the state for his entire career developing a successful private practice and contributing significantly to Michigan’s architectural legacy during the Modern and Post-Modern eras. Kessler was elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 1968 for his outstanding contributions to the profession and has been referred to as one of Detroit’s greatest modernists. During the second half of the twentieth century, Kessler designed many of Detroit’s most recognizable buildings and his work has received numerous awards and citations.

The Kessler House was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on September 30, 2013.
