If the logic that there is no concrete data on the exact percentage of the OBCs in our country is being usedsociety -and aimed at gaining political mileage. .

to prevent the implementation of this legislation, one must look into the fact that all major data sources like the latest round of NSSO report and the NFHS indicate that the proportion of the OBCs in our country is much above 27% in our country. Similarly, all the state governments have its elaborated fist of OBCs based on which such reservation do exist in many states. The JNUSU demands that the central government must appeal agarnst this .

order and make sure that the present leg.islation is implemented in letter and spirit in the concerned institutes form the next academic session itself. .

Examining Issues in the Ongoing Debates in the JNU Student Movement .

At this juncture in the JNU student movement, it is time to pause for a moment and assess the paradigm ofthe ongoingcrisis. It is time to recall the values and ethos ofthe student movement which has been built in the course ofstruggles. The PRO ofthe university, in the name of'public relations', informs the public that students who insist on demanding.

minimum wages for workers on campus are a disruptive influence, deterring contractors from taking up construction pr0jects in JNU. The students are seen by the authorities to be a blot on JNU's 'image'. But isn't the fact that the JNU Administration has for years and years been denying (and continues to deny) minimum wages to workers on campus a blot on JNU's socially sensirive image? .

Assessing 19 February : Beyond Binaries .

I.

Today, a frenzy offear is being whipped up whereby some features ofthe February 19 protest are being presented as the .

greatest threat to JNU's democratic culture. Is this true? On the other hand, is it true that those same features representall that is highest and best about JNU's culture of prote~t? It is time we tried to place the events of February 19 in perspective, beyond these binaries. .

The JNU student community would agree that some ofthe features ofthe February 19 protest were neither advisable nor .

a matter ofcelebration. Whatever our differences, it is undeniable that above all those particular expressions ofprotest .

gave the JNU Administration an excuse with which to hit back atthe student movement. They arenot a routine feature of .

' \ the JNUstudent movement. Which is why it was fitting that the JNUSU, on behalfofthe student community, has 'put the record straight and expressed regret for the above, and, contrary to false propaganda, all the nine suspended students have communicated their faith in this resolution ofregret to the Administration. .

Regreuable tl1ough those events were, it is NOT TRUEthat those features ofthe protestrepresent an impendingapocalypse _ of anarchy, the worst threat to 'academic' order and peace, some sort of 'world turned upside down' in JNU where 'ultras' will be able to' insult authority' and 'destabilise academics'. .

Administration's Biases : Punishing Protests, Shielding Lumpenism In JNU, we all recalJ several instances where a section ofstudents have indulged in violence, with communal and anti-dt:mocratic intent-branding a person ofa particular religion to be 'terrorist' and prevent him from speaking, or to assault students who oppost a particular right-wing ideology. Or we've seen cases ofwanton lumpe,n attacks by certain. elements .

againsrerdinary students or even a Hostel Warden who challenge them. In noneofthese cases has theAdministration ever summarily suspended a sil;gle student. In fact, in the vast majority ofthese cases, no Eaquiry has seriously been pursued, and no punishment meted out to the perpetrators. .

In co:IJ,trast to such· events, it is crystal dear that on February ·.

19, ·what was uppermost ·on the Jnind ofthe pz:otestingstudents was 1101 some perverse wish to humiliate an individual or a figure ofauthority. What was uppermost for the students was their indignation at the plight of retrenched workers and daily wage workers deprived of legal .

minimum wage on JNUcampus. This indignation atAdministration's callousness a:egarding their legal dutY' towards.

.

these w~rkersw.hi.ch created the impasse with tbe Registrar. Some of the expressions of t~is indignation were undesirable and have unnecessarily drawn attention away from the real issue. Recognising this, the JNUSU leadenhip has expressed regret, while upholding the core issue ofworkers' rights. .
