BNSF 1003 leads Norfolk Southern’s last ever TripleCrown service. Time is now rapidly dwindling on the service and only has a month left on it’s clock. A really sad fate to an awesome train service that garnered an iconic level of recognition from buffs.
Train: NS 256 with BNSF 1003 (C44-9W)
Norfolk Southern Huntington District
Roanoke, Indiana
Conrail's #241 is headed west around Dixon, IND on 10/10/1998. The train started out at Conrail's Road Railer / TripleCrown facilities at Crestline, OH.
Western Dreamer's Pacing Triple Crown was achieved through victories in the Cane Pace, Little Brown Jug, and Messenger Stakes. He was named Champion Three Year Old Pacer and Pacer of the Year in both the United States and Canada, and earned the title of Canada’s Harness Horse of the Year.
He was officially retired as a six-year-old in 2000, as the fifth-richest pacing gelding of all-time with over $1.8 million.
Western Dreamer found his way into the winner’s circle 27 times and was second or third 29 times. He remains the only gelding (neutered male) of any breed to win a Triple Crown.
Since July 2001 he has been a resident of the Hall of Champions at the Kentucky Horse Park.

NS's TripleCrown is headed west to Buffalo on the former Nickle Plate with the city of Cleveland, OH in the back ground on 9/12/1992
#256 is all up and down as the long train traverses the hogbacks between Buffalo and Lanesville.

NS TripleCrown Roadrailer 256 heads into downtown Lafayette, Indiana on the former Wabash. With the operating costs, age, and continued used of largely proprietary parts to service the aging trailers on these trains, Ford has decided to officially end the last two remaining Roadrailers on July 1st, 2023, a true end of an era for this region. But at the end of the day, it’s also really hard to believe these trains managed to last for as long as they did (5/9/23).
An overnight snow fall covers the fields of Southeastern Michigan as NS 255 heads west towards Kansas City on the former Wabash Line.
I'm much happier taking photographs with the iPhone than the 'proper' camera; I hope this will change as I practice, practice, practice with the DSLR :-)
Just having left a crew change point less than an hour prior, NS 256 rolls past the first siding East of Moberly with 150 of Triplecrown's finest trailers in tow. Bound for Detroit, Michigan, this Eastbound train is one of only two trains like it that remain in service between the Motor City and the Fountain City.
NS 255 heads west through Hannibal Missouri as the sun sets on a late March evening. Rumor has it the Roadrailer service between Detroit and Kansas City will be ending in July, so getting these trains has moved up significantly on my agenda.

NS Westbound Roadrailer 255 exits a severe thunderstorm at Arnold, just East of Jacksonville, Illinois, with the fresh Virginian Heritage pulling 120 trailers. The train is still inching along the Springfield-Hannibal District at a snail's pace under a Summer storm caused speed restriction that produced 60-70 MPH winds.
My last TripleCrown Roadrailer shot of summer 2022, NS 255 heads through downtown Lafayette with a thoroughbred Dash 9 solo, started and ended my photos of this train with the same type of leader and it was nice to end it off at this new location (7/31/22).
Early Monday mornings are never good... unless you're out trying to get a shot of the roadrailer. Being the last of it's breed and being so close to home, I had to get out and get a shot of this train as it may be the last opportunity I get. Due to a derailment on the line this train normally runs on, they routed it through St. Louis.

From October 11, 2014. NS 251 (Sandusky, OH-East Point, GA)
A train that I really miss seeing on the Norfolk Southern Railroad since it was abolished for this region, the Triple Crown "Roadrailer", seen here with a standard cab D9-40C leading the charge up the Braswell Mountain grade at Rockmart, GA. Notice the engineer is having some fun by wearing what looks like a wrestlers mask!
The Erie heritage unit leads Roadrailer train 255 west on the old Wabash mainline near Curran, Illinois.

NS 256 rumbles across the Illinois River lift bridge behind a pair of GE Dash 9s with a long string of trailers for Detroit. The goal for this day was to document the road railers thoroughly before they fade into history. I intercepted the Eastbound at Moberly and chased it to Righter where it met its counterpart. I then chased the Westbound, 255, all the way back to Hannibal. All around, it was a pretty successful day.
Day 17/366: At night, these glazed tiles at the entrance to Chichester's Pallant House Gallery are really eye-catching.

Secretariat won the Triple Crown in 1973, winning the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. The winning horse retired to Claiborne Farm near Paris. The City of Paris is named after Paris, France and honors the assistance that America received during the Revolutionary War. Located in Bourbon County, the city is surrounded by a number of famous horse farms. Many of the farms have stately mansions that are occupied by their Jet Set owners a few weeks a year. The city has a population approaching 10,200 and a very active entertainment district, a number of well maintained historical houses and buildings from the hemp era of naval stores.
Another shot taken while enjoying a bracing and uplifting early morning walk along the long stretch of beach at the Witterings, West Sussex
For now, these unique trains continue to elude the ravages of TOP21, Norfolk Southern's take on PSR.
As seen at beautiful West Jacksonville, IL, train 255 accelerates west out of town, having just met eastbound 148 in the siding at Arnold, a few miles the other side of Jacksonville.
These trains are amazingly long; I'm estimating well over a mile in length.
