Optical detector with line sensor TSL202R 128 pixels. Intention is to detect fast-moving objects in less than 100 us.
The tests are done. The obtained results are excellent. The used hardware is the FPGA DE0-Nano Board of Terasic. This board is very small and powerful.
During development there were several changes made. Especially the sensitivity, was improved. The measured focus distance is implemented within 100 us, even 66 us can be achieved.
This time is determined by the integration time. Also the sensitivity is determined by the integration time. The measured ambient is therefore also upwards. In bright sunlight, this integration time can be limited.
The ideal focal point is adjusted in the middle of the measuring array, at 64 pixels. Lasers and camera are focust on this point. In the field, this focus position can be shifted.
The triggerpoint change on this setting. The DOF value also influences the trigger point. A higher value allows more DOF deviation and give an earlier trigger.
The Noise parameter affected weak signals, but to low noise setting may lead to false triggering. Higher ambient light need higher noise setting.
The ambient light is is measured over a full scan line of 128 pixels and the average value thereof is stored and is visible on the LCD display.
If there is a trigger, the trigger position and the trigger level appears also on the LCD display.
In summary, this detection is the fastest version I've ever made. It is beyond all expectations.

First design try from the camera control frontplate for the next version 2013. This screen is the main display in run mode. The display used is an LCD 4 x 20 chars.
Keyboard settings:
Three flashes are defined, one to the left, one to the right and one optional ring-flash for very close records. Each flash can be set individually so you can set the light direction and power. But all flashes can be changed global in 1/3 stops increment/decrement. Control of this power is done into the FPGA controller via the TTL mode signals X and Q.
Focus control set the optimal triggerpoint for the fast moving object. Small variations can be optimized into the field. One unit is 0.4mm depth variation.
Integration is the integration time (range from 70 us to 500 us) for the line array detector. Longer value gives higher signal especially useful for very small insects. Insect less than 1 mm can thus be triggered in-flight.
Dof value set the depth range. Higher Dof gives more easy triggers but to high Dof can give pictures out focus. There is a 16 steps range to control this values.
Noise is the max noise signal before a valid level is detected. Again here to small value can results into false detection but is very useful for small insects especially if it is dark (at night).
Extra display information:
"Pos" value show the used trigger positon after each photo. This information can be used to optimalize the Focus value.
"B" show the actual battery value. The battery is a race-pack type 7.2V 4200 mA as the FPGA controller ask 250 mA and the green lasers 700mA if actieve. The 7.2v is converted to 5.0V and 3.3V via high efficiency DC/DC converters.
"Nr" show the actual taken pictures, so you have not to look at the E-EPL3 camera display.

Results from an excel data analyse of the sensor data of a high-speed moving object that come in focus and the flash light after the delay of the external shutter-lag time. The difference between flash light and triggerpoint give the delay. Here I have 70 scan lines at 50 usec/scan line or 3500 usec delay. Even the flash time (power) can be seen on this diagram. More flash power will give wider flash section.
At the triggerpoint the lasers are switched off. This give a very clear low level sensor signal. After the shuttter-lag delay the flashes are on and this give on all sensorlines a equal high level light. The duration of this light is show on this 3D diagram.
Due to more sunlight the ambient light stay here higher than my previous picture. The moving object was not an ideal object, so even there the signal is lower but high enough for detection.
I use only 32 readout pixels/line at the centre of the ideal focus triggerpoint. Tomorrow I will give 64 pixels per line in order to better reflect the adjacent properties.
The aim of this presentation is to develop better algorithms for the detection.
