Christmas Market Trier has been elected as Germany´s most beautiful market. Today it is closing. I´m longing for November 2020 when it is reopened.

The Porta Nigra (Latin for black gate) is a large Roman city gate in Trier, Germany. It is today the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps [Wikipedia] The gate survived in the medieval times, when many Roman structures were destroyed for building materials, by being converted into a church.

A lot is different in 2022. The Trier Christmas market is smaller than in previous years and the houses on the main market are just as little illuminated as the newly renovated Gangolfkirche. The war in Europe leaves its mark with the energy crisis. But we can still celebrate and try to suppress what is happening.

Trier is a city on the banks of the Moselle in Germany. It lies in a valley between low vine-covered hills of red sandstone in the west of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, near the border with Luxembourg and within the important Moselle wine region.

The Basilica of Constantine (German: Konstantinbasilika) at Trier, Germany is a Roman palace basilica that was commissioned by the emperor Constantine I (AD 306–337) at the beginning of the 4th century.

Today it is used as the Church of the Redeemer and owned by a congregation within the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland. The basilica contains the largest extant hall from antiquity and is ranked a World Heritage Site. The hall has a length of 67 m, a width of 26.05 m and a height of 33 m. It is designated as part of the Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It took me a week to get to the Dolomites because I wanted to see some places that have nice tourist attractions. Trier I wanted to see because of the Porta Negra, but these old churches standing next to each other were even better.

The Liebfrauenkirche (German for Church of Our Lady) in Trier, is the earliest Gothic church in Germany and falls into the architectural tradition of the French Gothic cathedrals. It is located next to the Trier Dom and is designated as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Basilica of Constantine (Evangelical Church of the Redeemer) in the Rhineland-Palatinate city of Trier, the former Roman Augusta Treverorum, was originally a Roman palace hall. It was built as an audience hall for the Roman emperors who resided in the city in the 4th century.

During the “Illuminale 2025” festival, the building was illuminated with a video mapping installation.

Saint Gangolf Kirche

St. Gangolf's Church is a Roman Catholic church in the city of Trier. The church was built in the early 15th century and is located just of the Hauptmarkt in the centre of the city. After Trier Cathedral, it is the second oldest church building in the city.

Have a good start into the new week!

Gute Fahrt in die neue Woche!

Trier is a lovely old town in the Mosel valley with a lot of history. For a time, it has been the capital of Western Roman Empire, and it still shows in numerous monuments from Roman times. There is also plenty of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture. And, architecture aside, it is just a very pleasant place to relax and a convenient base to explore the beautiful area around it.

Going ever deeper into my archives in search for images that still speak to me. This is the very end of my film days. I bought my first digital camera a few months later.

Germany's oldest city has an extremely diverse architecture. The cityscape offers a spectrum from Roman times through the Middle Ages to modern times. A stroll through the city is particularly worthwhile at night.
