Christmas Market Trier has been elected as Germany´s most beautiful market. Today it is closing. I´m longing for November 2020 when it is reopened.
The Porta Nigra (Latin for black gate) is a large Roman city gate in Trier, Germany. It is today the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps [Wikipedia] The gate survived in the medieval times, when many Roman structures were destroyed for building materials, by being converted into a church.
In the middle of the Trier vineyards you can discover this unusual building called Thiels-Burg. It was built in 1910 by the Prussian director Hugo Thiel as a monument to to promote viticulture.
A lot is different in 2022. The Trier Christmas market is smaller than in previous years and the houses on the main market are just as little illuminated as the newly renovated Gangolfkirche. The war in Europe leaves its mark with the energy crisis. But we can still celebrate and try to suppress what is happening.

It took me a week to get to the Dolomites because I wanted to see some places that have nice tourist attractions. Trier I wanted to see because of the Porta Negra, but these old churches standing next to each other were even better.

Trier is a very walkable town, with most of its key sights located within easy walking distance of the old city center. But there is also a special tourist mini-train (called the Römer Express) that takes visitors on a 35-minute tour of Trier’s Altstadt (old town).
The city (pop. 103,000) is easily reached by rail or auto (via either the A64 or A602 autobahn). Trier caters to tourists by offering a good selection of hotels and restaurants. Located only about six miles (10 km) from the German-Luxembourg border, Trier is also a good place from which to take a day-trip to Luxembourg City.
Trier is a lovely old town in the Mosel valley with a lot of history. For a time, it has been the capital of Western Roman Empire, and it still shows in numerous monuments from Roman times. There is also plenty of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architecture. And, architecture aside, it is just a very pleasant place to relax and a convenient base to explore the beautiful area around it.
Going ever deeper into my archives in search for images that still speak to me. This is the very end of my film days. I bought my first digital camera a few months later.
