The Gray Fox has a reason to smile. This foxes ability to run vertically straight up tall trees frustrated the fox hunters who first came to North America. With it's semi- retractable claws and very catlike appearance, this is a very clever fox indeed! <3

Thank-you to all who take the time to comment on my photos, it is greatly appreciated!

Shot taken at Jack Block park in West Seattle - loved how delicate the crow (raven?) was in plucking berries off the branch and eating them. Didn't realize how snake-like their tongues were, as well!

Photographed on Antelope Island, Utah.

Traditional stories from many Native American nations include a deity whose name is translated into English as "Coyote". Although especially common in stories told by southwestern Native American nations, such as the Diné and Apache, stories about Coyote appear in dozens of Native American nations from Canada to Mexico.

Usually appearing as a trickster, a culture hero or both, Coyote also often appears in creation myths.

Today as I crept up on the Coyotes, Momma had me from two-hundred yards out or more and limped off to the tree line. But Candy was asleep by the pond. She was rolling around on the ground and making little growls as if dreaming of baby ducks or some such thing. I got about ten feet from her before I startled her back to earth. She gave me a backwards glance and a disgruntled snarl as she gathered her wits while running off. I wish I hadn't, but I'm certain I spoiled her dream. I'm ashamed to say, I was a bit proud. It's not too often that you get the drop on a trickster.

Those of you who know me will know I love Ravens. I dont get to see them very often, at least not up close like this. :)

Royalty, politics, sports, power (stay in or get it), be the winner. People plot intrigues or cheat to achieve their goals and get what they want. Not only people, because science has found numerous examples of tricking or play-acting in the animal world, especially among birds and primates. So it's a universal behaviour pattern.

So how about this little intrigue/cheat: pawnish, lowly "Man, Don't Get Angry" (MDGA) game pieces, entering the royal playing field of the noblest games of all, ready to silently take over the place of the true king, queen, and their acolytes. Man, will they be angry once they realise what just happened. Will they? I'd say, "Power to the People" and game on ;) It's the season of the Pawns. Maybe this is also just another variant of suicide chess (in German, it's Räuberschach, "robbers' chess"), the only chess I ever played successfully.

I was ready to skip. I'm not a huge fan of board games, although I always quite enjoyed Scrabble, Monopoly, and Trivial Pursuit. And of course, we played "Mensch ärgere Dich nicht" (MDGA, which was inspired by Ludo and Pachisi) and a game called Malefiz (another descendant of Pachisi) when I was little. "I don't like board games" also means that there are none at home. Other than the very basic compendium of games I bought (you guessed it) for our last "game pieces" theme. It comes with three puzzle-like cardboard game board pieces (one sticks them together like puzzle pieces to get the whole game board – a simplistic game in itself, if you like). One side has a chess board print (used as background), the other the classic MDGA design, and game pieces for the latter and also for checkers. And chess pieces? There are none, which is a bit of a bummer.

None of the components is special in any way, which made me think of either skipping or buying a board game with interesting game pieces (a stupid idea). But then I remembered my old, truly vintage travel/pocket chess. It's a "De La Rue & Cos. Improved Pocket Chess Board With Chess Men Complete". It's foldable like a book, made of very sturdy cardboard, and the game board part has slots under each square where you can put in the cardboard "chess men" for each move. I thought I'd hide the wooden game pieces behind the cardboard chess pieces of the vintage pocket chess: "Trojan horse style". Theme participation ensured, money saved :)

Size info: The wooden MDGA pieces are 2,5 cm/0,98 inches tall, and the entire scene has a width of 6,5 cm/2,55 inches.

HMM, Everyone!

When

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

One brushed by a trickster

The other a guardian spirit

I took the path I felt had the chance

Of finding a fox, don’t know why

But dread drummed like the woodpeckers

The further I looked down the trodden path

Those saplings, stretching out their infant arms.

So I came to your derelict patch

Eyes roving

Down the locks

Through the black smiles of factories, forlorn

When a voice found me:

“Why do you search so deep for a trickster so ‘sly?’”

“Because finding you means I’ve lost my way

And taking the path you’re expected to take seems the worst trick of all!”

Knowing the lesson was felt,

The fox revealed itself

With an eye that flashed the world in a line

And an ear that tuned out the fuzz, even in this dead silence.

Was that a coyote or a coywolf? If you were standing in Ontario when you saw it, here’s why you could say that you saw either one.

The coywolf, a hybrid of the wolf and the western coyote, is the dominant species of coyote in Ontario. Coywolf or coyote are usually one and the same.

This has been the case in Ontario for nearly a century. It wasn’t until the 1990s that a team of geneticists discovered all coyotes in the province were a genetic hybrid of eastern wolves and western coyotes.

“All the animals we have examined show the presence of eastern wolf and western coyote DNA,” Trent University geneticist Bradley White previously told the Banner.

“Eastern coyotes were recognized as a large coyote, but their relationship to western coyotes and eastern wolves only became clear after DNA analyses.”

DNA data suggest western coyotes arrived in Ontario in about 1919 and hybridized with eastern wolves such as the ones currently residing in Algonquin Park. They then spread east and occupied Newfoundland, as well as the northern New England states in the United States.

The eastern coyote, or coywolf, does differ from the western coyote and eastern wolf, though.

Coywolves aren’t afraid of humans to the same extent that wolves are. Also, coywolves are larger and often hunt in packs, which is probably related to their wolf heritage.

Coyote looked to the sky and then deep within his own mind. He thought, "I am very good at illusion, but I must be careful as I know at times I fool even myself."

The fog at Sargeant Bay was "thick as thieves", as they like to say. This rendered the sky almost snow white, while colours deep in the forest were converted into muted hues. However, the foreground elements were brilliant with vivid colours. They were peacefully resting in the mist that had transfixed this place into something that appeared to be frozen in time.

As if the world were shrinking, boundaries were no longer evident, but were instead hints of what lay beyond. Although fog was not changing this place, like a talented magician, it was a trickster, artfully playing with my perception, while we both enjoyed the show.

Mölln is a town in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is surrounded by several small lakes (Stadtsee, Schulsee, Ziegelsee, Hegesee, Schmalsee, Lütauer See, Drüsensee, Pinnsee).

The Elbe-Lübeck Canal flows through the town. Mölln belongs to the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg.

The town was founded in the 12th century. It rapidly became an important town, due to the Old Salt Route, on which the salt produced in the salt mines of Lüneburg (Lower-Saxony) was shipped to the baltic harbour of Lübeck, and the Stecknitz Canal, which was a precursor of the today's Elbe-Lübeck Canal.

Although situated in the midst of the medieval duchy of Lauenburg, the town was mortgaged to the Hanseatic town of Lübeck, which ruled Mölln from 1359 to 1683. Back from this times dates the Möllner Schützengilde von 1407 e.V. which was founded 601 years ago and still exists today with almost 300 members.

Mölln calls itself the Eulenspiegel town, due to Till Eulenspiegel, a legendary trickster known for exposing vices and provoking thought. Eulenspiegel is said to have lived in Braunschweig (Brunswick), but his last year of life he allegedly resided in Mölln. He died from the plague in 1350. Although his existence is not proven, there are several monuments to him in Mölln.

"

Edax, an emissary of Hell, carefully casts an illusion spell upon his horns, hiding them before entering the Unseelie Court.

He then peaks around the nearest baleful pillar tree and whispers to one of the guards, "Is—is... is the Royal Trickster around?"

The guard shrugs a moment before laughing, his wings flutter, aglitter in the light, "No, it's safe today. Your silly horns are safe!"

My favourite Rogue of them all, and the most misunderstood one of them all, Axel Walker aka the Trickster. I'm kind of surprised nobody tried the legs on him yet, as it works with the blue on his torso. Anyway, I figured I'd try it out since I still have 2 pairs of blue/yellow legs left.

У лукоморья дуб зелёный;

Златая цепь на дубе том:

И днём и ночью кот учёный

Всё ходит по цепи кругом;

Идёт направо - песнь заводит,

Налево - сказку говорит.

Там чудеса: там леший бродит,

Русалка на ветвях сидит;

Beside the sea stands a green oak tree,

And on the tree a golden chain:

And on the chain a learned cat

Walks round and round and round again;

When he goes left he tells a tale,

And when he goes right he sings a refrain.
