The Deschutes (deh-Shoots) River is a major tributary of the Columbia River. The river provides much of the drainage on the eastern side of the Cascade Range in Oregon, gathering many of the tributaries that descend from the drier, eastern flank of the mountains. The Deschutes provided an important route to and from the Columbia for Native Americans for thousands of years, and then in the 19th century for pioneers on the Oregon Trail. The river flows mostly through rugged and arid country, and its valley provides a cultural heart for central Oregon.

I took this one at Trenchford Reservoir last Sunday. While almost back at the car park after our wonderful circular walk around the reservoirs we could hear a waterfall. We eventually passed a tributary which feeds Trenchford reservoir but the falls were hidden from view above. So after getting back to the car park I sneaked back with the tripod and climbed down to get this view, reminding me a bit of a Mayan temple hidden in the jungle. The light was pretty extreme with glaring sunshine on one half of the cascade and rest of the frame pretty dark. I therefore took 2 exposures and blended them together during the processing.

Lake Jindabyne receives the flow from the Snowy River as well as its tributaries, the Thredbo River and Eucumbene River.

The Jindabyne pumping station pumps the water from the rivers into the Snowy-Murray tunnel where it flows west through Murray 1 and Murray 2 Power Stations before entering the Swampy Plains River and then the Murray River.

The flow of water into Lake Jindabyne is particularly strong during the spring months of October and November.

This tributary crossing serves as a significant landmark leading to the side trails of Rich Falls, Big Falls and Dome Falls. On this day, my objective was to reach Rich Falls. According to the research info I had, the trail should have been 10 to 15 minutes past this crossing on the left. Well...I walked 10 to 15 minutes and didn't see a trail. I kept going. As a matter of fact, I kept going to a place on the trail where I could hear Big Falls raging and "raising a ruckus" like you wouldn't believe in the gorge below. I turned around to backtrack hoping to see the trail and instead ended back up at the tributary again with no results. Knowing full well how dangerous the descents down into the gorge are after this point and to avoid attempting a bushwhack (let wisdom prevail), so I headed back across the tributary. Not long afterwards I encountered Charlie, an experienced hiker on the trail who was on his way to Big Falls. I explained about not being able to locate either trailhead, and he obliged to lead me right to where the trail to Rich Falls began. We ultimately reached the trailhead, about 30 minutes after the tributary crossing which was rarely used and was hidden underneath the fallen leaves. Charlie spoke about some of the steep sections of the trail, and I thanked him for the info and assured him I would be fine after I had started. After sharing some friendly parting words, he headed off towards Big Falls and I headed down the trail to my destination.

The Arno is a river in the Tuscany region of Italy. It is the most important river of central Italy after the Tiber.

The river originates on Monte Falterona in the Casentino area of the Apennines, and initially takes a southward curve. The river turns to the west near Arezzo passing through Florence, Empoli and Pisa, flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea at Marina di Pisa.

With a length of 241 kilometres, it is the largest river in the region. It has many tributaries: Sieve at 60 kilometres long, Bisenzio at 49 kilometres, Ombrone Pistoiese at 47 kilometres, and the Era, Elsa, Pesa, and Pescia. The drainage basin amounts to more than 8,200 square kilometre and drains the waters of the following subbasins:

The Casentino, in the province of Arezzo, formed by the upper course of the river until its confluence with the Maestro della Chiana channel.

The Val di Chiana, a plain drained in the 18th century, which until then had been a marshy area tributary of the Tiber.

The upper Valdarno, a long valley bordered on the east by the Pratomagno massif and on the west by the hills around Siena.

The Sieve's basin, which flows into the Arno immediately before Florence.

The middle Valdarno, with the plain including Florence, Sesto Fiorentino, Prato, and Pistoia.

The lower Valdarno, with the valley of important tributaries such as the Pesa, Elsa, and Era and in which, after Pontedera, the Arno flows into the Ligurian Sea. The river has a very variable discharge, ranging from about 6 cubic metres per second to more than 2,000 cubic metres per second. The mouth of the river was once near Pisa but is now several kilometres westwards.

It crosses Florence, where it passes below the Ponte Vecchio and the Santa Trinita bridge (built by Bartolomeo Ammannati but inspired by Michelangelo). The river flooded this city regularly in historical times, most recently in 1966, with 4,500 cubic metres per second after rainfall of 437.2 millimetres in Badia Agnano and 190 millimetres in Florence, in only 24 hours.

Before Pisa, the Arno is crossed by the Imperial Canal at La Botte. This water channel passes under the Arno through a tunnel, and serves to drain the former area of the Lago di Bientina, which was once the largest lake in Tuscany before its reclamation.

The flow rate of the Arno is irregular. It is sometimes described as having a torrentlike behaviour, because it can easily go from almost dry to near flood in a few days. At the point where the Arno leaves the Apennines, flow measurements can vary between 0.56 and 3,540 cubic metres per second. New dams built upstream of Florence have greatly alleviated the problem in recent years.

The flood on November 4, 1966 collapsed the embankment in Florence, killing at least 40 people and damaging or destroying millions of works of art and rare books. New conservation techniques were inspired by the disaster, but even decades later hundreds of works still await restoration.

Dubna river is the right tributary of the Volga. Length 165 km. the catchment area is 5474 km2. The source is in the Vladimir region, on the Klinsko-Dmitrovskaya upland, the mouth is 9 km below the Ivankovskaya dam. The left tributaries flowing from the Klinsko-Dmitrovskaya Upland are numerous: r. Kunya, Kobzha, Shibovka, Velia, Yakot, Sister, etc.; there are few right tributaries, the most significant are the Sulot and Nushpolka. In the upper reaches, Dubna flows in a valley with steep banks, indented by the mouths of small flowing rivers and streams. On the flat Upper Volga lowland, the valley becomes wide. The floodplain is heavily swampy, covered with stunted birch forests and alder bogs. These are the favorite places of hunters. In the spring, the river overflows for several kilometers and does not enter the banks for a long time. In some places the channel is straightened by artificial canals. Below the Veli river mouth, the valley is less boggy. The most interesting part of it is the area of the village of Verbilki, where the Privolzhsko-Dubninsky State Reserve was located (now closed). Here, on the ancient dunes, there are various types of forests with very rich flora and fauna. Below the confluence of the Sestra River, Dubna becomes a deep and wide river. The most significant settlements are Verbilki, Yudino, Starikovo; the city of Dubna is located near the mouth.

The River Wandle is a tributary of the River Thames in south London, England. The Kingdom of Georgia had been a tributary to the Great Seljuq Empire since the 1080s. However, in the 1090s, the energetic Georgian king David IV was able to exploit internal unrest in the Seljuq state and the success of the Western European First Crusade against Muslim control of the Holy Land, and established a relatively strong monarchy, reorganizing his army and recruiting Kipchak, Alan, and even Frankish mercenaries to lead them to the reconquest of lost lands and the expulsion of Turkish raiders. David's battles were not, like those of the Crusaders, part of a religious war against Islam, but rather were a political-military effort to liberate Caucasus from the nomadic Seljuks.

David renounced the tribute to the Seljuqs in 1096/7, and put an end to the seasonal migrations of the Turks into Georgia. Following the annexation of Kingdom of Kakheti, in 1105, David routed a Seljuk punitive force at the Battle of Ertsukhi, leading to momentum that helped him to secure several key fortresses in a series of campaigns from 1103 to 1118.

Georgia having been at war for the better part of twenty years, needed to be allowed to become productive again. To strengthen his army, King David launched a major military reform in 1118–1120 and resettled several thousand Kipchaks from the northern steppes to frontier districts of Georgia. In return, the Kipchaks provided one soldier per family, allowing King David to establish a standing army in addition to his royal troops (known as Monaspa). The new army provided the king with a much-needed force to fight both external threats and internal discontent of powerful lords.

Starting in 1120, King David began a more aggressive policy of expansion, penetrating as far as the Araxes river basin and the Caspian littoral, and terrorizing Muslim traders throughout the South Caucasus. By June 1121, Tbilisi had actually been under a Georgian siege, with its Muslim élite being forced into paying a heavy tribute to David IV. The resurgence of Georgians’ military energies, as well as his demands for tribute from the independent city of Tbilisi brought about a coordinated Muslim response. In 1121, Sultan Mahmud b. Muhammad (c.1118–1131) declared a holy war on Georgia.
