A common feature of the drier savannah and bushveld this Tree Squirrel was content to observe us from a safe vantage point.

Post-Thanksgiving Thai lunch ride.

The Girl's sister wanted to get some good Thai before heading home. We obliged and got her to ride with us on The Girl's other bike.

i went a little hat crazy. sure, we live in california, but hats are still a necessity occasionally.

The Girl's sister and parents were in town. The Girl and I were assigned to take photos for her senior year portrait.

The Girl has the lowdown.

our friends judah and sonia are expecting any day now, and i wanted to knit them something for the new arrival. since my sweater making skillz aren't the best, i opted for a blanket. the darker tones were intended in case of inevitable stains, and i chose a machine washable nylon/acrylic blend that's super soft.

European red squirrel with thick tail crouching on the ground

Here is Jen at my beloved Juki, setting up the sewing foot so she can try to finish her skirt. We made an error in judgment which unfortunately resulted in her taking out all of the stitching on the skirt that we did in one evening. But she learned, I relearned, and together we figured out a much better design to solve the fit problem. And it did solve it, to both of our elation. Can't wait to see the finished skirt.

A Fox Squirrel sits upright in the grass, holding a pine cone like a prize between its paws.

I spotted this one in my yard in Arkansas. It was completely focused, calmly working at the cone without much concern for my presence.

Fox Squirrels are the largest tree squirrels native to North America. They often forage on the ground and use their strong jaws to pry seeds from cones like this. It's a common but always fun behavior to catch up close.

So I ended up taking my laptop anyway. I think I have a problem. Oh well.

So we're staying at a La Quinta in Omaha, Nebraska. And looking at this map makes me realize we've come so little way toward our goal. And Nebraska is REALLLY long and I'd hate to wake up in it again. Tomorrow could be Wyoming or Utah. We'll see how harcore we end up being.

Wanted to find out if I could hold the 200-500 lens including a teleconverter steady enough to take some images of our backyard tree squirrels. So this makes the lens a 700mm f8. Actually did not work out too badly.

For the first time in a while, we had the larger tree squirrels at our feeders. There were five of them at one point in time - clearly they heard from their cousins in Ann Arbor that I was a softie for squirrels. That was just a matter of time, I suppose! Cosmo and Wanda were enjoying it for sure.

This hapless tree squirrel had entered my chalet through the open-sided roof and somehow land in the bath. That surface, being so slippery, prevented the squirel from gaining a foot-hold but then with on almighty, desperate lunge, it managed to land on the sill from where it made its escape.

Meeting up with The Girl™ for lunch. It's nice to be able to walk to her workplace, just 10-15 minutes away.

Variegated Squirrel (Sciurus variegatoides, black morph), Arenal Observatory Lodge & Spa, La Fortuna, Costa Rica.

These animals are quite small and much more blonde in colouring compared to the grey squirrels that we see in Southern Ontario.

The Tree Squirrel, Paraxerus cepapi, is primarly vegetarian, but like most rodents, will eat insects and of course, nuts.

Eastern Fox Squirrel, aka Bryant's Fox Squirrel or Fox Squirrel, Sciurus niger, feeding on the dregs of a cold coffee and chocolate drink from a discarded McCafé plastic cup, along the Big Rapids Riverwalk, Big Rapids, Michigan, USA [Note: After finishing the contents of the cup, the squirrel backed out and left, unharmed; the photographer did NOT bait the squirrel]

The American Red Squirrel, indiginous to North America, is outnumbered by the larger grey squirrels that were exported to the UK and Europe and have decimated the red squirrels there.

The American Red Squirrel is a feisty creature and this one was squaking and chattering at me as I walked nearby and interrupted its feeding.
