Mr. Nutcracker found his Acorn......

Monday at the park had this little critter posing for me,

first at the wooden fence then at the tree hump, (Burl)

The older ones know soon they will have their treat of the year,

They are watching me everyday and waiting.

The red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) is a medium-sized hawk. Its breeding range spans eastern North America and along the coast of California and northern to northeastern-central Mexico.

Red-shouldered hawks are permanent residents throughout most of their range, though northern birds do migrate, mostly to central Mexico. The main conservation threat to the widespread species is deforestation.

An eastern population ranges west through southern Canada from southern New Brunswick and Ontario to the eastern edge of the U.S. Great Plains, south to Florida, the Gulf Coast, and eastern Mexico. Only northernmost populations are migratory.

Red-shouldered hawks are forest raptors. In the east, they live in bottomland hardwood stands, flooded deciduous swamps, and upland mixed deciduous–conifer forests. They tend to live in stands with an open subcanopy, which makes hunting easier.

Red-shouldered hawks search for prey while perched on a treetop or soaring over woodlands. When they sight prey, they kill it by dropping directly onto it from the air. They may cache food near their nest for later consumption. When in clearings, they sometimes fly low to surprise prey. Red-shouldered hawks, like most raptors, have very sharp vision and reasonably good hearing, with talons capable of killing animals at least equal to their own size.

Small mammals are typically the most important prey, especially rodents. Voles, gophers, mice, moles and chipmunks may locally be favored based on abundance. Slightly larger mammals, such as rabbits and tree squirrels, are also occasionally preyed on. Other prey can include amphibians, reptiles (especially small snakes), birds, fish, and large insects.

American Red Squirrel.

Between 10 5/8 and 15 1/4 inches long. The smallest tree squirrel in its range. Rust-red to grayish red above, brightest on sides; white or grayish-white below. Nothing goes to waste in the garden, birds that feed on the feeders pick seeds of their choice, many of the others fall to the ground for others to munch on.

I wondered why the birds were eating the seed in this feeder so quickly!!!

Well, I guess I placed this feeder in a very convenient spot for Mr Sammy Squirrel :-)

Now the seagull may have thought this was a wily squirrel out to pillage the supply of Wonder Bread but I found him to be quite friendly and almost tame. Living in the park by the beach I imagine this little guy had become accustomed to the rewards of cute behaviour. Jack Darling Park is often filled with people packing picnic lunches who are more than willing to share bits with squirrels and seagulls--it's half the fun of going there and a smart squirrel learns how to work the crowd.

This was taken as he was apparently contemplating how to gain access to the bread-filled bag I'd brought with me and was just waiting until I'd turned my back in order to plunder the goods.

It's all about strategy when you're a squirrel surrounded by greedy gulls.
