This lion (Panthera leo) pride really loved this tree. There are at least five of them up there, and many more milling around.

This big leaf maple towered over my son Cole. It is the
largest tree of its kind that I have ever viewed!
I was really at a Dairy Queen parking lot in New Braunfels, TX when I took this photo, not at a beach. Fortunately our area is warm enough to support many tropical and sub tropical plants year round.
It's funny, the way something simple can transport us somewhere else. I looked up and instantly I thought of all our years spent in Port Aransas and how much I love being there, or anywhere coastal or tropical is good with me!
One of our trees was pretty damaged by a NJ storm. It seems to have come through OK, but there's like a third of it gone!

The Frazinus Quadrangulata is known as the Blue Ash Tree. Its native range is in North America from Michigan south to Arkansas and Tennessee. The height is about 50 to 75 feet once fully grown and can spread from 35 to 60 feet wide. It blooms between April to May and is usually a purple accent color. It needs very little maintenance and is tolerance of deer and droughts. It grows easily in dry to medium wet, well-drained soils. This is considered to be one of the best ashes for dry sites. The wood of blue ash is commonly used to products including tool handles and furniture. One major problem with this tree is the Emerald Ash Borer. The borer will kill an ash tree typically within 3 to 5 years after infestation. This pest is hard to kill off due to the fact that it feeds under the bark and bores into the wood.

Backstory:
This was taken during a walk to the local reservoir using the Hipstamatic app on my iPhone. I had recently seen a photo that was angled up towards the tree canopy and had this in mind (although this one is more straight up). I had also seen some interesting photos in which the color green had been desaturated and applied that to this photo using the tone curves available in the app. The resulting photo relies on this to punch up the fall colors, although the combination of film (Kodot XGrizzled), lens (Jack Landon) and flash (Apollo) contribute significantly. I didn’t think it would be much of a photo when I took it, and so it was pretty amazing to see it coming to life while working on it on the iPad.
