Spruce Tree House, the third largest cliff dwelling (Cliff Palace and Long House are larger), was constructed between A.D. 1211 and 1278 by the ancestors of the Puebloan peoples of the Southwest. The dwelling contains about 130 rooms and 8 kivas (kee-vahs), or ceremonial chambers, built into a natural alcove measuring 216 feet (66 meters) at greatest width and 89 feet (27 meters) at its greatest depth. It is thought to have been home for about 60 to 80 people.

The third largest cliff dwelling in Mesa Verde, the Spruce Tree House was discovered by the Anglos when ranchers looking for stray cattle chanced upon it in 1888. A large Douglas Fir tree grew from the structure to the top of the mesa, and the ranchers descended into the dwelling by climbing down the tree. The tree was later cut down by another explorer. The Spruce Tree House has 130 rooms and 8 kivas, in an alcove 66m wide. It is believed to have housed 60-80 people between 1211 and 1278. It remains one of the best preserved structures in Mesa Verde. Ironically when I visited however the site was closed due to the collapse of a wall.

I had hoped to take the bus to another neighborhood on this day a couple weeks ago, but my bus pass wasn't ready for use. (The money had to be reloaded onto it.) Instead, I walked down past Mighty-O to a spot that I had been meaning to photograph: this tree house on a corner, across the street from the random Darth Vader Little Free Library. I even managed to catch a little bit of sunlight coming through the branches.

The same day we went to Steam Town in Scranton, we also stopped by Nay Aug Park which is also in Scranton. We didn't have much time and it's a shame because there is a waterfall I would have liked to have seen. The tree house is pretty cool.

Montezuma County, Cortez,CO, Mesa Verde National Park - some of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in the world - The Anasazi inhabited Mesa Verde between 600 to 1300 - Spruce Tree House

Mesa Verde National Park, Coloroda.

Spruce Tree House, the third largest cliff dwelling (Cliff Palace and Long House are larger), was constructed between AD 1211 and 1278 by the ancestors of the Puebloan peoples of the Southwest. The dwelling contains about 130 rooms and 8 kivas (kee-vahs), or ceremonial chambers, built into a natural cave measuring 216 feet (66 meters) at greatest width and 89 feet (27 meters) at its greatest depth. It is thought to have been home for about 80 people.

Spruce Tree House was opened for visitation following excavation by Dr. Jesse Walter Fewkes of the Smithsonian Institution. Dr. Fewkes removed the debris of fallen walls and roofs and stabilized the remaining walls. Due to the protection of the overhanging cliff, Spruce Tree House had deteriorated very little through the years and has required little supportive maintenance.

The cliff dwelling was first discovered in 1888, when two local ranchers chanced upon it while searching for stray cattle. A large tree, which they identified as a Douglas Spruce, was found growing from the front of the dwelling to the mesa top. It is said that the men first entered the dwelling by climbing down this tree, which was later cut down by another early explorer.
