The Torre del Oro (or Tower of Gold in English) is located on the banks of the Guadalquivir River in Seville. It was built to strengthen the city’s military defenses in the 13th century by blocking traffic on the river and being a watchtower. This is the beautiful Iglesia de San Gil y Santa Ana located in the Moorish district of Granada, Spain. During the Albaicín's heyday, this Moorish community had a large number of Mosques located throughout the neighborhood, but during the Christian reconquest in 1492, the Muslim population decreased as practising Muslims were forced to leave by the Spanish Monarchs. Many of the mosques located within the Albaicín were destroyed and replaced by churches. Have you ever visited a church that had been converted from a mosque?

After a full day of exploring the Albaicín, take a walk on the road that runs along the Darro River called the The Carrera del Darro which takes you back to downtown Granada. As you walk along the road don't forget to look up to see the Alhambra, which sits on top of the hill right across the river. You can also make a quick stop to see the old Arab baths on your way back to downtown Granada. You might even see an artist painting a beautiful scene of the river.
