Don't get me started. Five days after the massacre, we are still trying to figure out who authorized cutting the priceless Brazilwood trees.

Speaking of trash, please, please, please do not post your flicons (or group icons) below my pictures! It drives me bonkers, and I will delete your comment.
This is the second photo I took of this building and the fellow walking by. Note that he’s moved on a few steps and stopped to zip up his coat. Made it cooler, overall and added a few other changes as well. Hope you like it as this is the very last one.
There’s a small surprise that awaits a careful viewer. Look at the photo at its enlarged size!
As the three of the four Bando de Kvar (www.flickr.com/groups/2472126@N24/ ) members (Where’s Paul?, #wherespaul) strolled around downtown Hamilton, Ontario in the late afternoon light, we were keeping an eye out for potential subjects for a little street photography. I spotted this gentleman across King Street in front of Jackson Square. He was wearing a large rucksack and with the somewhat grizzled appearance, the hat, cigarette, trash receptacle and all, this seemed a good subject.
As for people who are curious about the sharpness of the AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm, let me assure you it is sharp, wide open as can be seen here. It is sharper at the long end than my old AF-S Nikkor 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 VR, much sharper. Hence I no longer own the AF-S version. My version is the non-VR one so no image stabilization came into play and it was all down to keeping the shutter speed up and letting higher ISO take care of the consequences. Better a sharp somewhat grainy image than an unsharp but grainless one. - JW

Tech Details:
Taken using a hand-held Nikon D7100 fitted with an AF-P DX Nikkor 70-300mm (non-VR) lense set to 300mm, ISO1600 (Auto ISO), Shutter priority mode, f/6.3 (wide open), 1/500 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: scale image to produce a final size of 9000vertical set exposure compensation to EV+1.25 brighter than as-shot, convert to black-and-white and decrease the green and red channel gamma to get a suitable base tonal range, enable Graduated Neutral Density/GND tool and rotate it to cover the lower portion of the frame and then adjust it to darken the area covered by the sidewalk and better balance its tonality with the man, slightly increase contrast in L-A-B mode, apply a bit of Luminance noise reduction, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: adjust the tone curve to brighten the mid point section slightly and also darken the bottom (approx) 10%, duplicate the image to a new layer and add a black/transparent mask on which the man’s face is painted in using a soft-edged brush with white paint, adjust the tone curve of the man’s face on the new layer, use the dodge-burn tool with a small soft-edged brush to dodge/brighten the lighter areas of the man’s eye, duplicate the image to a new layer and add a black/transparent layer mask on which a soft-edged paintbrush with white paint is used to paint in the entire man and the trash receptacle and then sharpen those areas without sharpening and enhancing noise in the background, save, scale image to 6000 high, sharpen slightly, save, add fine black-and-white frame, add bar and text on left, save, and finally scale to 2048 high for posting. - JW

New trash receptacles that have since disappeared from the corner of 403 Sul, Brasília. Never did discover why they were removed.
With just an exception or two, this downtown building looks to be in great shape. I love the blue and cream white color scheme.

"Modern America is a throw-away society because we value convenience above environmental protection. For many people, being able to grab a Big Mac on the way home from work is much more important than helping to solve the landfill problem. Being able to throw all of your garbage into one bin instead of taking the time to separate the recyclable goods is, again, an example of choosing convenience over the environment.
"Part of the problem is that people today are conditioned to focus on the short-term and worry about the long-term ... well, some other time. Our society is full of self-help gurus telling us to 'live in the moment' and not think about the past or the future. While this may be healthy in some respects, it ultimately creates an atmosphere in which people 'shoot now and ask questions later'."
-- Arden Davidson, "Reasons we have become a throw-away society"
All the SmartPacks trash compactors are situated outside at Roland Garros, with twelve SmartPacks located around the Suzanne Lenglen Tennis Court, (the second largest stadium at Stade Roland Garros, with a capacity of 10,056) and twelve situated around the Place des Mousquetaires, where the main food area is located. They are positioned with two units side-by-side: one for general waste, and the other for aluminum cans and plastic bottles, making it easy for the spectators to recycle. bit.ly/1SYdo35
In 2014, the French Open used just six SmartPacks. In 2015, are utilizing twenty-four SmartPacks. Using the SmartPacks at the French Open has made a huge difference in the required labor and overall efficiencies at the facility. Thibaut Poulier, Sales Manager at Harmony France explained, “Prior to having the SmartPack Compactors, Roland Garros had 250 people managing the cleaning of the stadium, now only 180 people are needed. They used to empty the bins 25 times per day, now it is between 2 and 3 times, and never during the lunch rush. It is very nice that public does not see the staff emptying the bins while they area eating.”Learn more: bit.ly/1SYdo35
