Beautiful 60' cascading waterfall located near the town of Rosman, NC in the Pisgah National Forest.

I'm sure that this plant has other names, scientific and common, but I don't know what they are, so I'll call it a daisy. Part of the surroundings of Food Matters, a unique grocery/restaurant, in Brevard, North Carolina.

Thanks for looking! Isn't God a great artist?

I have stopped by Looking Glass Falls many, many times and have not been pleased with my photos. Hubby insisted we stop and I was treated to some gorgeous light this morning.

Looking Glass Falls

Pisgah National Forest

Transylvania County, North Carolina

The last full day of the workshop my brother Ted and I had with Randy Sanger (Randall Sanger Photography) in late April began at Looking Glass Falls, not many miles from our Pisgah Inn base. Knowing the day was to be sunny and that the sun above the falls would make shooting difficult before late, we arrived about an hour after sunrise and got in about 50 minutes of shooting before the sun interfered. At first, other photographers were there, but soon we had the place to ourselves -- quite a break, as this waterfall is very popular. Kevin Adams (North Carolina Waterfalls, 3rd edition) says the waterfall is about 60 feet high and is at 2,360 feet elevation.

It was a fantastic day in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, North Carolina. The target species to photograph was Three-birds orchid, and I had predicted its bloom perfectly. But, there were also other orchids and wildflowers to see.

Someone tell this rhodendron it's now autumn, not springtime... or, on the other hand, just let it bloom!

On this day, all the signs pointed toward the first wave of blooms of Triphora trianthophoros or Three-birds orchids in my favorite spot of the Pisgah National Forest, near Brevard, North Carolina.

After photographing these beauties, I made a short trip up the mountain to the Blue Ridge Parkway to see what had changed since I had been there just a week before.

Brief trip to the Pisgah National Forest to check on the Platanthera ciliaris or Yellow Fringed orchids. There were probably 50-75 of them scattered along the grassy shoulder of a forest service road. It was cloudy the entire time I was there, which is a good thing for wildflower photography.

Pisgah Inn

Blue Ridge Parkway MP 408.6, elevation 5,000 feet, North Transylvania County, North Carolina

We know there are mountains and valleys obscured by the fog and low clouds, for we've seen them before -- two days ago when we arrived, and in earlier years. However, since a few hours after our Wednesday arrival, we have been socked in, with no view other than the fog, once you get beyond the buildings and close-in trees; it's now Friday noon. Fortunately, we have reading material, and just resting is enjoyable -- but these things could be done at home. When the fog lifts, the rocking chairs are ready for relaxed viewing.

This photo was taken from our balcony, which is in Transylvania County, and the view (absent fog) is into Transylvania; however, the Pisgah Inn property is at the junction of four counties: Transylvania & Henderson south of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Haywood & Buncombe on the north.

I am frequently asked why I return to a particular place time after time to photograph an orchid species that I have photographed on other occasions. This is the reason...

I couldn't resist going up to the Pisgah National Forest this morning when I determined that the Three-birds orchids would be in another bloom cycle. I was richly rewarded today. This one is the best of the bunch.

Way Back Machine - September, 1976

Davidson River, Transylvania County, NC

This photo was taken by my mom. A day at the river in the last days of summer... skipping rocks with Dave. I honestly do not remember this day.. but I remember like it was yesterday the fishing trips that he and I would take to this river as adults... twenty years later.

How inviting!

(But we didn't sit down on our way to or from the bakery...)

A brief day trip to a couple of secluded locations in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard, North Carolina. I used my daily temperature "technique" to predict this bloom cycle perfectly. It's about a 1.5 hour drive for me to get there, so I wanted to be reasonably sure they would be in bloom. Check out the "technique" I use to determine the blooming of this unusual native orchid species by going to Jim's Blog.

Even though it was threatening rain the whole day, we decide to head up to the Pisgah National Forest, north of Brevard, North Carolina, to sample some of the early Fall foliage...

Wind-blown Clouds, Long Exposure

Devil's Courthouse Overlook

Blue Ridge Parkway MP 422.4, elevation 5,462 feet

Transylvania County, North Carolina

This was taken two weeks ago today (on April 26), during an afternoon too sunny for shooting waterfalls well. The area was under a severe wind advisory, and it was strong enough to roll the parked SUV perceptibly while parked at the overlook. It also made hands uncomfortably cold, without gloves, and I had left mine in our Pisgah Inn room. Although I had gotten some images in which clouds happened to be blurred to some extent, this was the first time I had set out to produce blurred-cloud images. Randy (Randy Sanger Photography) suggested I use manual exposure (something I have historically seldom done) as I learned to use my camera's bulb timer. This 50-second exposure is the longest I tried in the session, but I was nice to be able to let the camera time it, rather than having to use an external device or count off the number of seconds I wanted for the exposure.
