This is my favorite photo from the trip. I'm still not entirely comfortable taking photos of strangers, but when I gestured with my camera at the lady sitting down, she smiled, turned to face me a little more, and straightened her sari. I meant the photo to focus on her, but serendipitously, I think it's even stronger because of the woman glowering in back -- I love her pose, and the expression on her face.
My father told me that he can tell, looking at them, that one is Tamil and the other Sinhalese. I can't tell myself. What do you think? Is it obvious?

While airplanes can fly in a straight line, trains need to hug the coast of the East China Sea, adding considerable travel distance. I have generated this map using a GPS onboard and the excellent gpsvisualizer.com. While the exact location of the tracks and the details of the route are widely documented (and visible on satellite maps) I figured it would be cool to bring home a precise trail. In red is the first segment of the trip from Beijing to Qinhuangdao, where we arrived in the evening. The second segment is missing—unsure of the reliability of the onboard power outlet once in the DPRK, I decided to recharge my GPS overnight. The green segment is our trail from Dandong, the Chinese border city is where we arrived around 7am, to Pyongyang.

On March 31 2012, I was given the privilege of being able to ride on the Ffestiniog railway`s gravity train as a specially-invited brakesman..
It was an unique experience for me having the sensation of riding down on these wagons from the summit at Tanygrisiau power house to Minffordd, something that my grandfather could well have done when used to work at Maenofferen quarry.
My sincere thanks goes to Peter Dennis & Iain Wilkinson for making it possible for me to undertake this unique experience.
