For today's Steam Sunday here's a recent one from my annual visit to New England's own Steam Mecca. It's a bit of a Christmas tradition now to meet my Dad and step mom at the historic Griswold Inn for lunch and hot buttered rums and then a walk about the historic Connecticut River seaport town. Then after lunch its time to get out and shoot the parade of steam.

For five weeks before Christmas the Valley Railroad (dba Essex Steam Train and Riverboat) runs an astonishing amount of holiday trains branded as the North Pole Express. Most are steam powered and this requires all three of their steam locomotives to be under steam at once. Excepting the Strasburg Railroad I don't believe there is anywhere else in the United States where it is even possible for three standard gauge rod connected locomotives to be under steam at once. But here, every weekend, it is a regular occurrence as the railroad runs 13 sold out departures between 2 and 8 PM every Sat and Sun (only 9 on Tu-Fri). Through some fortunate twist of fate I only live a bit over an hour away from this magical place so every year I make a trip or two down just to soak it all up.

The 2 PM departure to the North Pole has just departed as it rolls thru the open field near MP 4.5 on the old New Haven Valley Line after under Dennison Road and then over the short trestle crossing the Falls River. In charge and putting on a good show is Valley Railroad 2-8-2 'Mikado' #40.

Built by ALCO at their Dunkirk (N.Y.) works in August 1920, this locomotive has had a long and interesting career. It was one of an order for three identical units constructed for The Portland, Astoria & Pacific Railroad to haul train loads of logs and lumber. Unfortunately, the PA&P was never completed so the locomotives sat idle until they were sold to other railroads. No. 101 (our locomotive) was sold to the Minarets & Western Railway for similar service. When that railroad could not pay it’s debts, the locomotive was given to the Southern Pacific Railroad, which sold it to a used locomotive dealer which in turn sold it to The Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad in North Carolina as their No. 40.

On the A&R it pulled freight and passenger trains until about 1950 when it was retired and stored in their engine house. Here it remained until it was discovered by an employee of the Valley Railroad. It was purchased in 1977 and loaded onto flat cars for it’s trip to Essex where it has been for the past four decades.

Il presepe

Queste sono statuine (molto piccole) di un presepe tradizionale napoletano, comprate 15-20 anni fa a Roma a Piazza Navona. Sono in terracotta "vestita", ossia, piccole come sono, hanno abiti di stoffa.

These are (tiny) pieces of a traditional Neapolitan nativity. I got them in Rome some 15-20 years ago. They are in terracotta and, small as they are, their clothes are fabric.

This is one of the arts culture from Blora, Indonesia. The name is Barongan Gembong Amijoyo. There are several characters in Barongan Gembong Amijoyo, one of them is Singo Barong (in the picture).

Since having my rustic arbor and bench built I try to decorate it with a wreath every year. This is the one I chose and have used over the past few years.

Normally, Jongmyo Shrine is only open for guided tours on most days. However, I was able to get in without a guided tour because it was on a Saturday which was the only day not needing a guided tour. Still, I got a glimpse on how much importance South Koreans put on cultural education to their kids.

Right over here in this photo was a guide in hanbok explaining to the kids what was Jongmyo Shrine used in the past. A really interesting thing to note is that despite fast changes and foreign influence over the decades, Korea has still managed to keep many of its traditions.

Many boats sail on Victoria Bay in Hing-Kong, but none of them are as spectacular as the Aqua Luna, her red sails and small lights make her the most famous Chinese sailing boat in Hong Kong.

The Aqua Luna was built from scratch; it took a Hong Kong craftsman 18 months to construct using traditional shipbuilding methods under the supervision of a 73-year-old shipbuilder.

The Great Highland bagpipe (Scottish Gaelic: a' phìob mhòr) is a type of bagpipe native to Scotland. It has acquired widespread recognition through its usage in the British military and in pipe bands throughout the world.

The bagpipe is first attested in Scotland around 1400, having previously appeared in European artwork in Spain in the 13th century. The earliest references to bagpipes in Scotland are in a military context, and it is in that context that the Great Highland bagpipe became established in the British military and achieved the widespread prominence it enjoys today, whereas other bagpipe traditions throughout Europe, ranging from Portugal to Russia, almost universally went into decline by the late 19th and early 20th century.

This Christmas bauble was hand beaded with sequins and pins by me. I have a Christmas tradition. I bead Christmas baubles for a select group of friends every year. In this case they are for a friend, who like me, elects blue as her favourite colour.

Each bauble is 15 centimetres in diameter and contain hundreds of sequins, varying in number depending upon the complexity of the pattern and the type of sequins I use. Most sequins in this bauble are 5mm in diameter, except the butterflies which are 10mm, and the central butterfly which is 12mm. Depending upon the colour of the sequin, I will use either a gold or a silver pin to attach it to the bauble. I always leave the flowers and stars until last, allowing a gap in the sequin chain to pin them in.

These baubles are smaller than some others I do, however because it is a complex pattern which starts from the inside and is worked outwards in ever larger circles, each bauble takes approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours per side.

It is however, a labour of love which I do to pass the time throughout the year.

Feliz año 2015 lleno de fotografías !!!

Happy New Year 2015 plenty of photos !!!

In my family the tradition we have is linked to Christmas: the tree, Santa Claus, the family that gets together, gifts, celebrating with delicacies and a few cheers with a good prosecco.

The photo I publish is the symbol of this tradition, a small bird that has been decorating our Christmas tree for more than 60 years, time has ruined it a little but still survives.

Merry Christmas to the whole world

- In the winter it has always been a good Dutch tradition to skate and afterwards drink a hot choco cream or eat a bowl of pea-soup with smoked sausage.

This year we are breaking December heat records, so no chance to skate, but I keep the food traditions alive.

Why ? Simply because I can and... I like it !

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Waarom ? Omdat het kan en zo lekker is !

The Bangor & Aroostook Railroad over the years did a lot for its workers and public as well. The company started the tradition of running a turkey train for its employees. Santa would also ride all weekend handing candy out as parents recieved a turkey. Saturday would cover stops at Houlton, Squa Pan, Presque Isle, Fort Kent and Madawaska. Sunday, Oakfield, Millinocket, Derby and Northern Maine Jct. Here is the 1991 version with wreath adorned F-3 # 502 passing Island Falls, Maine.

Barbara and I have gotten personalized Christmas Ornaments since the 70's. For the last few years we have gotten them in Pigeon Forge, TN. Christmas is a big time at our house, even though it is just the two of us. Yesterday, being the first Saturday of December, was the day to go to one of the local tree farms and pick out our Christmas Tree. The farmers cut them for you, so it is nice and fresh.

During the next couple weeks, everything will be removed from the mantel, curio cabinet, coffee table, window sill, piano, etc. Christmas decorations will replace everything removed. Barbara and I made many of the decorations from ceramics. Dozens of stuffed animals will fill the living room. Barbara's little girl Bride Doll and her electric train will go under the tree. The train is almost 60 years old and still runs fine. Yes, Chistmas is a big time at our house.
