In the heart of the historic city of Cáceres stands the Convent of San Pablo, a cloistered monastery inhabited by Poor Clare nuns. Founded in the 15th century, the building displays the sobriety of late Gothic architecture, evident in its ogival arch doorway and bell tower in the shape of a belfry with three bells. Originally a beaterio, the space evolved into a convent, integrating Romanesque and Gothic elements. Today, the nuns devote themselves to the production of renowned artisanal sweets, such as “Yemas de San Pablo,” keeping traditional recipes alive. The Convent of San Pablo is part of the Old Town of Cáceres, a historic-artistic site classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1986, recognized for its unique fusion of architectural styles, with Gothic, Renaissance, Islamic, and Roman influences.

Between pages gently curved by the soft Mediterranean breeze lies a golden coqueta, a sweet symbol of a tradition that stands the test of time.

These Coquetes de Sant Antoni are more than just a tasty treat — they carry the warmth of grandmothers kneading dough with love, of festive afternoons gathered around a warm oven.

Natural light wraps the scene, highlighting its simplicity: the printed recipe speaks of inherited wisdom, while the humble coqueta takes center stage, quietly reminding us that the most authentic things in life are often the simplest.

An image to be savored with the eyes… and the heart.

Un tast de la nostra tradició.

Step back in time with a visit to Higashi Chaya District, Kanazawa’s iconic historic neighborhood brimming with Edo-period charm. Established in 1820, Higashi Chaya is one of Japan’s best-preserved geisha districts, its cobblestone streets and wooden teahouses whispering tales of a bygone era. This district holds the prestigious designation as a cultural asset of Japan, a title shared only with Kyoto’s Gion, underscoring its historical significance.

The architectural allure of Higashi Chaya lies in its traditional machiya townhouses, constructed with weathered wooden facades and delicate latticework. These two-story buildings, historically designed to accommodate geisha performances and patrons, exude understated elegance. Upstairs, you’ll find rooms adorned with tatami mats and paper shoji screens, while downstairs often housed bustling teahouses.

The district's main street features impeccably restored structures that transport you straight to the Edo period. But wander a little further into the side alleys, and you’ll discover quieter, less-traveled corners that highlight the authentic spirit of old Kanazawa. Many teahouses now serve as charming cafes, shops, and small museums, offering a deeper insight into geisha culture and the district’s fascinating past.

Higashi Chaya isn’t just about history; it’s also a vibrant hub for modern-day artisans. Discover hand-crafted gold leaf souvenirs, a Kanazawa specialty, or savor a cup of matcha tea in one of the original teahouses. Whether you’re photographing the intricate wooden details, indulging in traditional sweets, or soaking in the ambiance, Higashi Chaya District is an unmissable gem for lovers of history and architecture alike.

They say a pleasure shared is a pleasure doubled, but, frankly, why take the risk?

Gifted to my father today by Pak Fan company, Pakistan, for the upcoming Birthday of our Beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad-e-Mustafa (salahu alihi wasalam), which will appear this Sunday (5th Feb, 2012). According to Sunni Muslims, Birthday of Prophet is 12th Rabi-ul-Awal Sharif, which is the 3rd month of Islamic lunar calender.

In Pakistan and across the world where Muslims reside Birthday is celebrated with recitation of Naats (hyms in praise of Prophet) and Quran Sharif (Holy Book of Islam and Word of ALLAH).

Another look at the store in the Hagia Sofia store sellling Turkish Delight, baklava and other traditional Turkish sweets. (Istanbul, Turkey, Nov. 2014)

Sue, the Chinese lady I met on the tour, samples some of the wares while the shop assistant packs her selection. (and mine). The shop assistant told us that the ready packaged Turkish Delight is not overly fresh, it's good as a gift for people you 'do not love'. (at least that's what he said). Fresh Turkish Delight, just out of the oven is super fresh, of a better quality and has a better taste. Sue wanted six packs, I wanted three, so we took nearly half an hour getting the fresh premium stuff packed, which held up our tour, much to our guide's consternation. He took his revenge by zooming off with out me at our last stop for that day later that day. (Istanbul, Turkey, Nov. 2014)

A group of Arabic tourists are given an explanation about Turkish sweets by one of the store assistants. Two forms of Turkish sweets are famous around the world- Turkish Delight (usually cube or cylinder shaped sweets rich with corn starch, sugar and pistachio nuts) and baklava. (string hopper like sugary sweets). Baklava is layery, flaky and messy, and usually dripping in sugar syrup, so is best eaten at the store or cafe. Turkish Delight is however dry and though usually resting on a bed of powdered sugar, is more portable. You have hundreds of stores all over Istanbul proudly announcing Turkish Delight for you to buy and take home. (Istanbul, Turkey, Nov. 2014)

And that's me sampling some of the Turkish Delight on offer. I am having a piece of coconut, in a sweet form. The shop assistant took a good half an hour packing our order. 'Feel free to look around, taste whatever you like, pick up and taste whatever you feel like', he told us. Now that was a good, generous gesture! But then again, there is only this much that you can eat in a day! Especially of rich sweets like this, that too with a slight sugar problem that I have! (Istanbul, Turkey, Nov. 2014)
