As I'm making progress on my Island town I am in need of a number of small ships to fill the harbour. They have to be small in order not to obstruct the view on the Island.

This one is actually based on one of my earlier sloops but with a color scheme and theme based on the small ship from the classic set Imperial Trading Post.

More pictures can be seen on the Ideas project page.

(Although the rigging is different due to Ideas rules concerning the use of custom material.)

As per suggestion of Fehron Argonaut I added a small mast and rerigged the ship with a lateen sail on the second mast.

I figured I might as well do a complete custom rigging. Looks much better now :).

Come and sample the future of consumer home electronics on the Tech Trade Show today!

I've been watching a lot of gaming and tech history videos lately so naturally I couldn't resist exploring that glorious world of floppy disks, orange, sky blue, power-suits and moustaches. Much fun was had in making the figs; matching up beige outfits with boofy hairdo and facial hair.

I don't really know much about this building, as there doesn't appear to be much information about it readily accessible on the Internet, but I have passed it several times in the past week as I've been travelling to work a different route to usual.

It's near the big roundabout in Wandsworth, and is part of an area called Plantation Wharf right next to the Thames.

It is fairly unusual in its design compared to most other tower blocks in the area so I thought it was worth trying to take a snap or two for posterity.

Easier said than done, due to its height and the fact that it is pretty much surrounded by buildings which preclude one from being able to capture it in its entirety, even with my 17mm tilt shift Canon lens. This shot is from up the road, slightly more telephoto in length at 88mm on the 24-105 lens ...

Philip Harding Klimanek (1883-1965) was born in the Czech Republic, at the time his place of birth was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. In ca. 1905 he started to work for Holland-China Trading Company, in Hong Kong.

In 1939, when Charles Gesner van der Voort arrived in Shanghai to work for the company, he was Charles' superior. In a letter home he wrote: "Played chess with Klimanek in the French Club" [translation Pieter Lommerse, the French Club was Le Cercle Sportif Français, a fashionable place to be in the 1930s and it still exists today].

Philip Harding Klimanek was also a juror for the Hong Kong judicial system, which can be found in gwulo.com, for the last time in 1941.

His grandson wrote to me: "Though he had been based in Shanghai before the war we know he was captured in Hongkong on 24th Dec 1941 during the “Battle of Hongkong”. He had been a volunteer with the “isolated Tytan [this should probably be Tai Tam, or Tytam at the time] Godows of the Food Control from November to the end of December 1941” We assume he was involved with food conservation as the Japanese were approaching."

"He was beaten up on capture and needed medical treatment. He was in and out of Stanley camp until the Japanese surrender in 1945. As he was of Austro-Hungarian descent after the war his nationality was hard to determine as his papers and all his possessions had been lost, his health was very poor as a result of how he had been treated during the war. Eventually he managed to get a temporary Czechoslovakian passport in 1948 issued in Nanking China. After a short period in the UK looking for work he returned to the HCTC and was traveling between Shanghai and Hongkong. He retired in Hongkong and returned to England 31st Dec 1950."

Gwulo.com administrator David added a comment about the Tai Tam godown shelters: "I guess he spent that time at Godowns (warehouses) that stored food for emergency use. You can see other examples of this type of godown listed at gwulo.com/hong-kong-shelter-area;

Philip Harding Klimanek was a close friend of Willem Kien, another early HCHC-employee, later to become director of the company. Willem Kien's daughter in law recalls seeing him during visits in The Netherlands, together with his wife Zoia and daughter Sylvia. Also Anneke Knüppe-de Jongh, daughter of former HCHC-employee and director Frans de Jongh, has warm memories of the family, which her family stayed closely in touch with.

This photo shows Sylvia and Reginald Klimanek with three other children in a swimming pool created aboard s.s. Zuiderkerk.

When I was in a doll collector’s club, we had “Buy, Sell, and Trade” about 4 times a year at our meetings. Charlotte wears a dress I got at one of those sessions. 👗

I recently did a trade with ponyguru and her pile of stuff showed up at my door today. I initially just traded for the two Graces you see, but she found a lot of 70s doll clothes and accessories she figured I might like.

I had to leave the house but I managed a few pics. I already see some Best Buys and other later 70s stuff like chairs and accessories so I’m excited to dig through all this when I get home.

Most of you know how I first came across Barbie as a very young child at my Mum’s work Christmas party, where they had a whole table full of old leftover stock ‘Trade-in TNTs’ from the Mattel headquarters down the road, that they gave away to the daughters of staff, while I got a stupid TV board game. It was the only time in my life where I really wished that I was a girl! LOL I think that also started my life-long Barbie obsession. And even though I have amassed quite a few lovely TNTs for my collection, I never had one of those ‘Trade-In’ gals…. until now. And what’s more, she is in my favourite hair colour, that deep, rich ‘Chocolate Bon-Bon!’ She came in her ‘baggie’ and her hair cello was still on, (you can just make it out in the photo with her OSS and box, lying near her feet,) so she was virtually unplayed with … her hair and ribbon bow are perfect! (Though I had to remove that cello as it was starting to actually stick to the back of her hair!!!) She’s not totally minty perfect as parts of her have faded somewhat , and she was missing her wrist tag, but it was SO great to finally fulfil a childhood longing… only took 45+ years! :P I decided to dress her in my favourite ‘Pajama Pow’ which looks so great with that hair bow! (I have the original yellow flats but changed it up with some orange bowed flats… the groovy pink belt is Becky’s!)

Now, you probably all also know about Mattel coming up with that genius trade-in program to launch their new Twist ‘N Turn Barbie in 1967, where one could trade in their old Barbie doll for this gal for less than half price... It was a massive success. (Please enjoy the TV ad that launched this gal and that trade-in program, starring none other than Maureen McCormick, ‘Marcia Brady’ from the Brady Bunch!) www.youtube.com/watch?v=TB0va0jaFYE

A small pool of heavy oil sits in a ~ 3 foot by 1 foot hole on the south side of CA 58 just west of McKittrick in Kern County, Califonia. This natural seep is one of the many that make up an area known as The McKittrick Tar Pits. In some areas, one of the first clues that oil is present in the subsurface is the fact that it sometimes finds its way to the surface through faulting or porous rock. Places where oil, asphalt or tar naturally comes to the surface are called an oil / tar seep or brea. Sands that are saturated with heavy asphalt or tar are called tar sands. The tar pits here lie on the western flank of the Temblor Range where alluvium covers Holocene alluvial gravels, fluvial sandstone, and lacustrine shales. These in turn overlie the kerogen-rich Miocene Monterey Formation. Most of the kerogen represent the preserved bodies of microscopic organism such as diatoms that live in the upper few meters of the ocean. The Monterey has many diatom rich beds called diatomaceous shales. Heat and time changed the soft body parts into liquid hydrocarbon and associated gas. About the same time, movement of the San Andres and associated faults help form the Temblor Range. Faulting and cracking of the rocks formed pathways for the oil to migrate up out of the Monterey, Some of the oil became trapped beneath an impermeable cap of Monterey Formation that slid of the Mountains. Most of the tar seeps occur in place where erosion has removed the Monterey cap (deposited by the landslide) and allowed the porous sandstone beds to be exposed and leak the oil.

As with its famous cousin, the La Brea Tar Pits, to the south, McKittrick's oil seeps also trapped its fair share of animals. Paleontologic studies of these seeps began in the early 1900's. Both the University of California and the Kern County Museum excavated the site in the 1940s. As of 1968, paleontologists identified over 43 different mammals and 58 different bird species. Bison, saber-toothed cat, dire wolf, camel and elephant, as well as smaller animals have been identified. Some of these species are now extinct. Most of the animal remains date back to the Pliestocene (10000 to 40000 years ago).

The Tulumne Yokut were the first people known to exploit the tar. Spanish explorers noted that they used it as a glue, a waterproofing agent, and related uses. It was so useful they found other tribes willing to trade for it. Early European settlers found similar uses, In the early 1860's the Buena Vista Petroleum Company began digging the tar at the seeps. In some cases Mining techniques were employed. A worker would be lowered down into the mine, then would fill buckets with the asphalt, while someone at the surface would pull it up. It was incredibly dirty and hot, As a result many miners chose to work naked and be washed at the end of the day. The Job had it dangers too, The workers not only had to contend with the tar in the pits, but also the hot weather of the San Joaquin Valley and noxious fumes from the oil, tar and gas. In the end, the mines were not very economical. The first oil well, The Standard Oil No. 1, was drilled in 1899. The well discovered oil and McKittrick Field was born. It became a major oil producer and is still producing today,
