As I am stuck at home not able to take photos for a few weeks (recovering from tennis elbow surgery) I am finally able to catch up on some old photos.
This one was taken exactly this time last year on a lake NW of Calgary, Canada.
One interesting fact I found on these birds is The Red-necked grebe consumes many of its own feathers. The stomach of this bird retains two balls or masses of feathers, however, the reason for this is unknown. Some believe that these feathers protect the lower digestive tract from hard, indigestible materials like bones, and these feathers are also fed to the young ones.

More Adirondack beauty. This is from my drone but only about 80 feet high.
I hope everyone enjoys this image! :D
A little blue heron shows off its best take-off form.
Thanks so much to everyone who takes the time to view, fave or comment on my photos!
Have a blessed weekend!

This locust borer photo is a leftover from yesterday but I thought it was a pretty cool character so I've posted it today. It is feeding here on Canada goldenrod pollen in company with a common eastern bumble bee and in fact looks more like a dangerous bee than the bumble bee does! Female locust borers lay their eggs on black locust trees now in the fall and the newly-hatched larvae overwinter under the tree bark before tunneling in and feeding on the black locust tree tissue in the spring. Larvae pupate in late summer and adults like this one emerge in early autumn.
2 Samuel 14:30 “So he said to his servants, ‘Look at the tract of land of Joab {next to mine}, for he has barley plants there. Go, set it ablaze with fire.’ So the servants of Absalom set the tract of land ablaze with fire.”
Another shot of a black-necked stilt chick, here about a week old.
Thanks so much for your views, likes and comments!

(This image is half of the story, read below to know the full).
All storytellers agreed on this legend. Millions of years ago, the forest got infected with myriads of mosquitoes. So many that the Forest got alarmed and sent a message through the ground and air, which went as far as the other side of the world. A magnificent and powerful creature called the Dragon was sleeping there but woke up at sensing the message. Then he flew non-stop 8,000 miles over the ocean, and when he entered the Forest, he devoured all the mosquitoes. When he finished, he looked for a tall grass in a clearing by the forest and rested. While resting decided to make the forest his new home forever.

Heath Park, Cardiff, 15 March 2021. A recently installed bench basks in the spring sunshine at the side of a path that has been upgraded to give a firmer surface for walking.
Heath Park is a 91 acre / 37 hectare park on the north side of Cardiff, a remnant of the Great Heath that covered a large tract of land westward to Rhiwbina and north to Llanishen. Its role as a public recreational area only dates from the 1950s, and since 1987 has been home to the Cardiff Model Engineering Society, which has established the Heath Park Miniature Railway and Tramway with two model railways.
The New Forest National Park, created in in 2005, is one of the largest remaining tract of unenclosed pasture, heathland and forest in Southern England. The landscape is shaped by grazing cattle, ponies, donkeys and deer.

Not a photo from today as it was rainy and cloudy all day. Heidi is in a bad mood, but the rain is very welcome. Spring has been too dry and warm here.
Anyway, this flower is called bugle (Ajuga reptans) and according to Wikipedia it "has been used in traditional Austrian medicine internally as a tea for the treatment of disorders related to the respiratory tract." I'm glad I decided to read a bit more before stocking up on Ajuga reptans. According to German Wikipedia it's only good for diarrhea, and given the big difference in symptoms I stopped looking further into it 😄

American Bison
The American Bison or simply Bison (Bison bison), also commonly known as the American Buffalo or simply Buffalo, is an American species of Bison that once roamed North America in vast herds. Its historical range, by 9000 BC, is described as the Great Bison Belt, a tract of rich grassland that ran from Alaska to the Gulf of Mexico, east to the Atlantic Seaboard (nearly to the Atlantic tidewater in some areas) as far north as New York and south to Georgia and, according to some sources, further south to Florida, with sightings in North Carolina near Buffalo Ford on the Catawba River as late as 1750. It nearly became extinct by a combination of commercial hunting and slaughter in the 19th century and introduction of bovine diseases from domestic cattle. With a population more than 60 million in the late 18th century, the species was down to just 541 animals by 1889. Recovery efforts expanded in the mid-20th century, with a resurgence to roughly 31,000 wild Bison today, largely restricted to a few national parks and reserves. Through multiple reintroductions, the species is now also freely roaming wild in some regions in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with it also being introduced to Yakutia in Russia.

In the Kiev tract of Dorogozhichi, a unique monument of Orthodox architecture and spirituality has been preserved since the 12th century - the church in honor of the saints Cyril and Athanasius of Alexandria, which is simply called Kirillovskaya for short. After St. Sophia Cathedral, this is the second oldest temple in the capital, preserved to this day from the times of Kievan Rus.

Tracts of desert land are sold cheaply in 5- or 10-acre allotments. People dreaming of creating a life far from the modern world tend to build cheap/quick boxes on them - a tiny square on a larger square in a desolate landscape, just the way they dreamed it. But desert life is hard, and it seldom works out. Driving through Twentynine Palms and Wonder Valley, I spotted more abandoned homesteader shacks than occupied ones, and pulled over to record the ones I could (almost getting stuck in the sand at one point - thanks, reverse gear).
