One from the archive today; an American Badger approaches, a little too close for comfort. I was lying flat with my tripod in a prairie dog town and Badger knew I was there but had been mostly ignoring me. I think the clicking sounds finally aroused his curiosity. I kept shooting as he approached, and suddenly realized, "He doesn't know what I am!" So I raised myself up onto my elbows and said, "Woa, big fella, you're getting too close!" He immediately stopped, in shock, I think. Ran back about ten feet, stopped again. Stared. Ran another ten feet, turned, stared some more. I didn't move. Eventually he returned to the business of trying to excavate prairie dogs from their burrows, and I continued shooting for the next hour. One of my peak wildlife encounters!

Bridge Day, the largest BASE jumping event in the world, is held on the third Saturday in October every year in Fayetteville, West Virginia. Over 450 BASE jumpers and close to 200,000 spectators attended this year’s Bridge Day on Saturday, October 18, 2008. The New River Gorge Bridge is the world’s 2nd longest single arch bridge, providing the launch point for six hours (9am -- 3pm EST) of legal, safe BASE jumps. This year the Governor issued an executive order to extend the time by one hour.
Jumpers from all over the world lined up to take their turn leaping from the 876’ tall New River Gorge Bridge. Although 876 feet is extremely high it is a quick 8 seconds from the bridge to the water of the New River! Most fall from the bridge for 3-4 seconds before deploying their parachute and spending the next 20-30 seconds floating down to the designated landing zone located at the water’s edge.
"BASE" is an acronym which stands for the four categories of objects from which one can jump – Building, Antenna, Span (the word used for a bridge), and Earth (the word used for a cliff.) BASE Jumping is known as being the world's most extreme sport. Bridge Day is the largest extreme sports event in the world, and is West Virginia’s largest one-day festival, rated one of the top 100 in North America. The festival is unique in that it is the only day visitors may walk across the bridge, BASE jumpers can parachute from the railing and rappellers are allowed to descend and ascend fixed ropes. Vendors line both ends of the bridge selling crafts, shirts, photos, souvenirs and refreshments.
The Bridge Day BASE Jumping Coordinators and parachutists around the world are requesting permission to make legal, safe parachute jumps from the New River Gorge Bridge catwalk on the two days before Bridge Day. A three-day window of jumping would permit parachutists from the US and many foreign countries to participate in their valued sport in a safer manner, while guaranteeing that weather would not be a factor. The small six hour jumping window currently in place at each Bridge Day proved to be a problem at past Bridge Day events. The proposal would not conflict with the current Bridge Day schedule and jumping would not interfere with the normal traffic flow on top of the bridge. There is also a proposal for additional weekends of jumping throughout the year, and eventually legal jumping every day of the year at the New River Gorge Bridge. Local businesses are strongly supporting the jumping expansion plan.
A similar bridge in Twin Falls, Idaho brings millions of dollars each year to the local community. BASE jumpers from around the world flock to the 486' tall Perrine Bridge to make year 'round legal BASE jumps.

I am 15 years old and pretty tough. A big dog tried to chew me up but my papa "launched" himself at it and pulled me out of it's jaws. Bad dog!
I was "torn to pieces" but I'm healing now and I'm happy once more. I really hope I never see that bad dog again!
making the most of the ice and snow...and trying to enjoy winter the best i can. I hope you are enjoying yours too!
Thanks for the memories my friend. You were always so kind to me :) Godspeed LLL

Sophie broke her arm last week. Fell off the monkey bars at the playground. A few tears, but then ... not one complaint. Not one dose of painkiller. Two days later, she was trying to climb the playground equipment again.
Unstoppable.

US Air Force Caroline White ran the 2011 Boston marathon fast enough to qualify for the US Olympic team. Her face doesn't show it, but she did so while overcoming some particularly tough obstacles that day.
Here's a link to a blog with her account of the marathon: rookiepros.blogspot.com/2011/05/caroline-white-2011-bosto...
her back hath its new ink,
though seldom ever seen.
she had months to ponder and think
and to come up with the green.
she wrapped herself in her cloak
with her customdesign in hand
and ventured to the parlor of smoke,
looking for the inking man.
yes! she had conquered this year-
when her heart was crushed,
as God held her & her wombfruit near
while numerous cries were hushed.
oh, time beats and the wind blows.
this girl doth not moan nor wail.
she patiently waits once more for love to show.
'tis apparent, she is as tough as nails.

Meet Stubbs. He was a ferel cat that my neighbor took in. He may be part bobcat. He has no tail, thus the name Stubbs.
Samantha poses for the cameras. We were all drooling over these Sam Edelman shoes our stylist picked out.
As the only mule among 24 horses, Atticus sometimes has a tough time of it (and I wonder if he's lonely). I gave him the name of the protagonist, Atticus (Finch), of my favorite childhood novel & movie,"To Kill A Mockingbird." Why? Because Atticus the Mule is genuine & gentle--but tough as nails when he has to be (which is how I would describe Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird").

Quote by the Laptop Gardener who says "This tough as nails Red Yucca isn't red and isn't a Yucca. It has coral colored flowers and is a succulent", also almost indestructible.
Right now they're a riot of color and busy blooming, seed pods and flowers at the same time. Benni and I see lots of them on our trail walk most days. She knows I'll stop where there's a huge patch of them and stops automatically. Poor dog.

For her 45th birthday, my friend chose to commemorate by participating in a demolition derby. She bought a fantastic old car, and with the help of her two sons and a bunch of friends, stripped it down and readied it for being bashed up. Her eldest kneeling and youngest reflected in the sidewall.
