I've learned that when a turn has a fish it often likes to toss it in the air and catch it again. Wouldn't you? I'm not good at gull or tern identification but my perusal of the books leads me to conclude that this is a Caspian Tern, based mostly on the bright red bill with a bit of darkness at the tip. If anyone has a different opinion, please chime in. (Sterna caspia)

Hooded Merganser male gives the crayfish a shake and, well, loses control. The hoodies do eat the crusty whole, so they may try and shake the legs off for more of a delicacy. You know - the bigger the crusty, the harder the shake. Be sure and check it "large" - the flying crayfish is remarkable.
No Chinese New Year is complete without a raw fish salad toss (lohei)shouts of abundance of health, fortune and prosperity

If the terns need to turn their catch to consume it headfirst they toss it mid-air. Amazing acrobatics.
Steller's jays are always a welcome sight, but none more beautiful of a time than in the winter. I love to see the contrast between their beautiful tones of blue with black against the white of the snow. On this day, we watched as a group of Steller's jays foraged for food in the hardened snow patch. This jay had found some and tossed them back to swallow. So interesting.
Happy Wednesday!!

A juvenile double-crested cormorant tosses its food to get it into the right position. ✔️
One could tell how inexperienced it was - it kept loosing its fish when tossing it, but was very quick in getting it again. Lots of practice still needed to make it an experienced hunter.
I watched this juvenile Yellow-crowned Heron as he tossed and caught this unfortunate crab multiple times. The crab was trying to escape, but in the end the Heron had crab for breakfast.
My thanks to all of you who stop, look and comment. I will be sure to check out your photostream.
This was found in an open area by some stores. Next to it was a bunch of cardboard laid out like a bed. I am assuming that this was used by some homeless person. Garbage all around it, as you can see by the empty bags
having caught the crab, the kingfisher was bashing it against the surface to break it's leg and shell
