I thank everyone for the recent visits to my latest works

Busy times do not allow me to stay here with constancy

but as soon as I can, I will visit ....:)

It's torn where there's beauty, it's torn where there's death

It's torn where there's mercy but torn somewhat less

It's torn in the highest from kingdom to crown

The messages fly but the network is down

Bruised at the shoulder and cut at the wrist

The sea rushes home to its thimble of mist

The opposites falter, the spirals reverse

And Eve must re-enter the sleep of her birth

And up through the system, the worlds are withdrawn

From every dominion the mind stood upon

And now that it's over and now that it's done

The name has no number, not even the one

The rolled section of this torn strip was about 1cm across - it was fascinating to see the textures of the rough edges so closely!

Tree trunk and roots on beach at Larabee State Park

What a difference twenty minutes, and thirty feet can make. Crepuscular rays raced across the scene as the clouds dropped and strafed across the rolling hills of Appalachia. The sun just behind the clouds, illuminating the scene, allowing hot sparks of sun to shine down on the mountains bellow. This is what dreams are made of, why these mountains are considered a fairy tail. Some mythic construct, blue haze, thick relentless fog, under a torn sky, this is what dreams are made of. Deep in the wilderness, breathing that fresh mountain air, if not for the occasional visitor, you may yet be convinced you’ve left home for middle earth.

(Vicente Aleixandre)

This week's theme for Mosaic Montage Monday was Torn Paper.

Remembering back to an art class in college, the professor wanted to teach us how to train our eyes to see Grayscale. So he asked us to simply tear out 10 pieces of paper from a newspaper and arrange them according to their intensity value, then glue them onto black construction paper.

Nowadays, all my newspapers have color pictures, so I used an old magazine that was already cut up. Now, I always have a Grayscale reference! If you try it, don't forget to play with the scraps, too! HMMM!

When you wake before the alarm, on the first morning of your holiday, you are torn. Do I take the lie in I know I need, or do I make the effort and get myself to a sunrise location. The decision was made easy. Looking at the usual weather apps for the locality and 40 miles east, there were only two potential opportunities to catch the light.

So, I drove on unfamiliar roads to the Penmon Priory. I left £3 at the box office/hut and drove to the carpark. There were about 10 camper vans lined up, but no sign of fellow toggers. On route to the accommodation the afternoon before, we made a short detour to scout the locality. So, I set up the tripod in the dark, where I knew the angle would work best.

Thick cloud offered little promise. But then an opening appeared and the phrase “this sky is torn” came to mind. Those of you of a similar vintage to me will now have Natalie Imbruglia’s version of the song Torn going through your head. Stood there, slightly cold, a little hungry and dehydrated and a little exhilarated to see some colour in the sky, I started to bust some moves! No, no, not my best clunky dad dancing but my version of David Armand’s mime version of the song! I’m not sure if any of the camper van occupants saw me, and what they made of me if they did! But sometimes they let me off the leash and into the wild! If you need a giggle, google David’s version of Torn on the usual online sites.

It was the only sunrise that I made. There was only one other sunrise during the week, but was not for me.

Grey Heron - Ardea Cinerea

The grey heron (Ardea cinerea) is a long-legged predatory wading bird of the heron family, Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but some populations from the more northern parts migrate southwards in autumn. A bird of wetland areas, it can be seen around lakes, rivers, ponds, marshes and on the sea coast. It feeds mostly on aquatic creatures which it catches after standing stationary beside or in the water or stalking its prey through the shallows.

The birds breed colonially in spring in "heronries", usually building their nests high in trees. A clutch of usually three to five bluish-green eggs is laid. Both birds incubate the eggs for a period of about 25 days, and then both feed the chicks, which fledge when seven or eight weeks old. Many juveniles do not survive their first winter, but if they do, they can expect to live for about five years.

In Ancient Egypt, the deity Bennu was depicted as a heron in New Kingdom artwork. In Ancient Rome, the heron was a bird of divination. Roast heron was once a specially-prized dish; when George Neville became Archbishop of York in 1465, four hundred herons were served to the guests.

The grey heron has a slow flight, with its long neck retracted (S-shaped). This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes, and spoonbills, which extend their necks.

Fish, amphibians, small mammals and insects are taken in shallow water with the heron's long bill. It has also been observed catching and killing juvenile birds such as ducklings, and occasionally takes birds up to the size of a water rail. It may stand motionless in the shallows, or on a rock or sandbank beside the water, waiting for prey to come within striking distance. Alternatively, it moves slowly and stealthily through the water with its body less upright than when at rest and its neck curved in an "S". It is able to straighten its neck and strike with its bill very fast.

Small fish are swallowed head first, and larger prey and eels are carried to the shore where they are subdued by being beaten on the ground or stabbed by the bill. They are then swallowed, or have hunks of flesh torn off. For prey such as small mammals and birds or ducklings, the prey is held by the neck and either drowned, suffocated, or killed by having its neck snapped with the heron's beak, before being swallowed whole. The bird regurgitates pellets of indigestible material such as fur, bones and the chitinous remains of insects. The main periods of hunting are around dawn and dusk, but it is also active at other times of day. At night it roosts in trees or on cliffs, where it tends to be gregarious.

This lovely little butterfly fluttered over my brightly colored blossoms one sunny day. He/she had wings that were a bit tattered and torn, yet the quest to visit each flower was strong enough to keep the butterfly moving along. I was reminded that all of us face adversities, yet it is what we do when challenged with those life moments that reveals who we are deep inside ourselves.
