We had some time to kill so we stopped by this great little park that resides in Colorado Springs. It had been raining on and off for the better part of the day and after resolving ourself to a night in the car so we spent the rest of the day exploring. As well as an amazing geological spectacle, it has a fascinating history that spans back eons.

The human history of the Garden of the Gods commences many centuries before our present time. Stone hearths and fire rings found in the Garden dating over 3000 years ago indicate the presence of early inhabitants, According to Ute traditions, their people have always lived in this area, and were known to winter in the Garden of the Gods.

It's no wonder they were drawn to this magical place.

My First night at Zion.

Everything we are and everything in the universe and on Earth originated from stardust, and it continually floats through us even today. It directly connects us to the universe, rebuilding our bodies over and over again during our lifetimes.

This was shot along the watchman Trail, My original Plan was to shoot the MW on the other side of the Watchman formation, but I was running late and had to stop here and shoot. If I waited any longer I would lose the core off the right side of the composition, so when I saw this fence I knew that would help with the layering in the scene. I tried to get some light on the fence coming in from the left but not draw the eye away from the Milky Way and hoping to keep the brightness visible in the galactic core, so this time I had a couple of subway napkins over the front of my light panel to dim down the foreground(a tip I learned from Wayne) and somewhat layer the scene if you will. :)

I found another shot from Trona Pinnacles in my ready to post folder, that I have forgotten to post. This is one of the taller single pinnacles shot in the first exposure and the moon is a second much faster exposure to kill down the glow. I processed this one a long time ago, but decided to add some sparkles to the stars and upload.

I finally managed to sneak down the Kukui Trail and found some nice clouds here at Waimea Canyon. Then the sun broke through clouds and cast some cool and interesting light over the landscape. After reviewing this photo, I wished I had taken out the 70-200 to pick the landscape apart piece by piece, but alas, Live and learn. :)

Taken in the Alabama Hills this morning. After 2 days of disappointing sunrises I was treated the last day to an amazing display of colors and shapes. Shooting towards the sun yielded colors of orange and gold with light hues of cyan and aqua shades and shooting away this direction was pinks and purples, the color is so intense in this shot that it was difficult to process without breaking the subtle hues and gradations from one color to the next. I was particularly impressed with the eye vortex shape in the lower left of the sky. I was supposed to go over to Death Valley but I had a flat tire on my way to meet up with some friends in Alabama Hills and decided to stay put rather than risk a second flat tire wilst in Death valley. Maybe next week. :)

This is a test shot taken while setting up some lighting in the Alabama Hills. I wasn't finished setting up the shot yet. To learn the effects of lighting I have started making a habit of adding one light at a time and take a test shot because sometimes the second light cancels out some of the shadowing from first light so I adjusted the brightness to a point that I don't lose the benefit of the first light. Notice how the light from the single panel to the left has really pulled the texture out under the arch via shadowing.

I really liked the way this looked with the first panel under the arch and a flashlight off in the distance like a twinkle in the eye silhouetted skyline and Venus up in the sky.

After a long night in Bryce Canyon I headed east through the Torrey area which is quite a spectacular area in itself, especially in the early morning. My plan was to head to Capitol Reef and then to The Goblin Valley state park before my final destination for the day at Canyonlands. This is the Gifford Homestead located along the route 24 on the Scenic Byway. When I say along the scenic byway i mean right along the byway 10 ft away. It was somewhat difficult finding a decent composition that excluded the roadway but still included the cliffside in the background.

Here's a shot taken on the 6th night of my SW trip. It was really late and Wayne and I where trying to squeeze in as many locations as we could before he had to head back to Salt Lake for a flight home. We hit this spot and immediately started setting up the lighting, It seemed that after shooting together for a short time we managed to work out a great procedure to prevent spoiled exposures do to a headlamps being turned on during an exposure, and after an hour or so it seemed like we had been shooting together for years, we were snapping away and not having any difficulty stepping on toes so to speak. The first night we were shooting together at the Kiva, Wayne had kindly offered to let me use his 6D since he would be using a new Nikon 810a and it was a tempting offer, and now that I think about it, I probably should have, just to say I had a photo taken with Wayne Pinkston's camera. But I was determined to see it through with my 70D so I really push the ISO on this shot and extend my exposure time as there would be less movement in the MW at this angle. The milky way was really high in the sky at about 2:00am which makes for a bluer sky and at this angle I didn't have to fight with light pollution. I was able to capture this shot at my camera's maximum ISO setting and It is a single exposure at 4000k white balance. All of the night photos from this trip I have been varying the white balance so that I could establish a white balance I like the best. :)

We used "LLL" to light the scene here.

This is the view looking out over the amphitheater at Bryce Canyon in Utah.

I have been posting a lot of night photos lately, so today I have decided to come out of the dark and show some daytime photos.

Even though it's been said that midday is a bad time to shoot photos, that's not the case here in Bryce. You can shoot anytime of day and walk away with interesting photos. After talking to some other photographers there, I'm told that it's rare to find a day in Bryce without nice puffy clouds. For this shot I wanted to focus mainly on the layered landscape and hoodoo formations. I realize that the composition is tilted slightly, but I have decided to leave it this way so as not to lose the sharpness in the photo. Most people don't realize how important it is to get your camera level before taking the shot because when you rotate an image, even the slightest then the software has to resample the image to "resquare" the pixels by filling in artificial pixels. This is commonly known as interpolation.

So "Hot Tip of the Day" is. Turn on the level in your camera or purchase a external level. It's a dirt cheap way to get sharper photos.

Finally!!

This is the other tree I have been yearning to shoot out in Zion National Park. The last time I was in Zion, I saw this tree off the road and instantly recognized it from a photo taken by Ryan Engstrom. I was on my way out of the park and swore that the next time I was in Zion I would shoot this little tree with the Milky Way behind it. Well it wasn't exactly the next time, I was there the weekend before this, with Flickr friend and AWESOME photographer William McIntosh. We wanted to get some night shots over the valley and of this tree. When we arrived things where looking good but about an hour before sunset all hell broke loose and the valley was hammered by 30-40 mile an hour winds and an awesome electrical storm. The storm continued for the next 5 days completely blocking the night sky. I decided to turn around and backtrack to a location I missed because of the storm. So, William and I decided to meet up again on my way back and try again. We setup and waited for the correct position despite the clouds completely covering the sky, I was sitting there praying the clouds would part long enough to get a shot off and low and behold right at my projected shot window, the clouds indeed parted somewhat and I grabbed this shot. There is a little cloud covering the main core but it kinda gives it a nebula effect. :)

Hope you like it. :)

Today I met Photographer and Educator Serge Ramelli at El Matador State Beach. I was setup in a spot along the shore working on exposures when he setup up his tripod right next to me and ask "Am I in your composition" The second I heard his voice I knew it was him, I looked him right in the eye and said, "Serge" He said yes. I said Serge Ramelli He said "Yes" Wow!!! The world just keeps getting smaller and smaller. I have seen over 100 of his movies on photography and processing on the internet. Well after the panic subsided, we shared several minutes chatting, He had mentioned that he had been at Laguna Beach previously so I asked him if he's seen the pirates tower at victoria beach. I proceeded to show him a shot of the tower and some other choice spots from LaJolla and CDM. He was kind enough to compliment me on my photography, but then again he might have just been being friendly which is the more likely scenario. :) He is a very nice guy and very charismatic and personable and I took the opportunity to snap a selfie with him. He took my name and said he would check my stuff out. Serge, what your seeing here is a direct result of your video training series. Thanks for producing such a fantastic series of tutorials. :)

You can see Serge's Ramelli's excellent line of products here.

I was setup here hoping that the sun would pop through the clouds at the last minute, but it didn't happen. I'm so glad I ran into Serge Ramelli there or the 2 hour trip would have been in vain. Thanks again Serge it was so nice to meet you. :)

I think it's time to get a telescope!!! This is a fellow photographer that I met in Joshua Tree National Park. He, his sister and another photographer and myself hung out here for a couple of hours exchanging tips and friendly conversation.

We were looking for variations on different compositions since nobody there could find a comp with the arch and the MW that looked any good. At this time of year the MW is on the back side of the arch which is somewhat less photogenic than the front side. So I strapped a 50 LED police headlamp on this guys head and handed him my back up headlamp set to red LED mode and ask him to put that on the ground at his feet. After a little fiddling and a few test shots I ended up with this composition. Hope you like it!!! :)

I will be heading back here in June when the MW is in a much better position. :)

This was shot at the White Tank Campground on the Arch rock loop.

Here's a blooper shot from day 5 of my southwest tour, it is the only time that Wayne turned a light on during one of my exposures, He had picked up my Brinkman 2 million candlepower torch lamp to test it's ability to reflect light. We were getting the lighting setup and he turned it on and shined it around. and said, I really like the color of this lamp and noticed I was exposing. Ooops!! No problems, we went on shooting the rest of the night.

Somehow when we arrived back at the cars later that morning it seemed like it was 4am when really it was 5:00 Then again, this was day 5 of the trip and I was already walking around like a zombie. :/ Who knows where that time went, but it was time well spent I say!!!

Funny thing is, one of the first comments I made to Wayne here on Flickr was about alien abductions. :)

I finally found it, Not like it was hiding or anything, but we kinda drove right by it on my prior trip to the Bristlecone forest, not realizing that it was visible right from the road "if" you know where it's at. This is the same tree from my B&W titled "Twisted Sisters" The tree looks entirely different from the side. My cousin and I thought we were totally skunked as the clouds rolled in and not a single star was visible in the sky. So we called it a night and crashed at midnight. 45 mins later my cousin Juvian got up to take a leak and saw that the sky was starting to clear. So I climbed out of my sleeping bag redressed with my standard 3 layers of clothes and we made a dash for the Schulman Grove. When we arrived on location the MW was already beyond my ideal composition that I had planned out using photopills, but felt this was interesting enough to shoot and post.

Hope you like it. :)

I have been wanting a sunset shot of the Firewave out in the Valley of Fire for sometime now. We headed in at about 5:30 and waited for the sunset. About 20 mins from go time I hear this siren blaring from the parking lot, It's the Damn ranger shoeing everybody out so that he can lock the gate up. I thought, someone needs to inform those idiots that sunset technically lasts a half hour after the sun goes down. So I did. I sent them a letter and complained about them strong arming me out of the area well before sunset. They replied explaining that the area needs to be clear and empty before it gets dark as there aren't any lights in the parking lot. A weak excuse if I've ever heard one. What, are we not able to light our own way. Next time I'm going to have someone drop me off there and pick me up the following morning. If they want to know why I spent the night inside the area, I'll explain there are no lights to safely guide me out. Two can play that game, but only one could walk away with a citation. :/ So here's a shot I snapped before I was ejected. :)

When I was growing up and in elementary school, I was always told to play nice when on the playground. Now that I'm all growd up, I find that this still applies. This is my new local playground, The Alabama Hills.

With Death Valley, Trona Pinnacles, Bristlecone Forest, Whitney Portal, Mono Lake and Yosemite, all within a few hours drive and just 15 mins away Lake Diaz, which is a great place to take a dip and cool off if needed. I'm much happier on my new playground, and I seem to make more friends here as well. After spending my last few week long trips with Wayne out in the southwest, he was kind enough to come out to my neck of the woods and spend a week with me shooting "The Hills" and surrounding area. That's his jeep in the background in the lower left. Wayne has been a wonderful friend and mentor and I would like to pay a tribute to his generosity and kindness. I would not be producing nightscapes and panorama's such as this, without his expert teachings. Thank you Wayne. :) You truly are the "Duke of the night Sky"

This panorama is a result of Wayne teachings, and was even shot using his backup camera, but please don't blame the pp on him. LOL :)

There 's nothing like cool temperatures and fresh air to raise the spirits. during my forays to the Alabama Hills the temperature can get up into the 100's and when they do, this is where I seek refuge. At around 9000 ft in elevation the difference in temperature is about 15 degrees and there nothing better the a fine mist that floats away from the falls right onto your weary soul.
