NS train 154 is rolling over US 78 at oft shot spot Cook Springs, Alabama, on the NS East End district. The C40-9 leader is a rare leader as the AC44C6M program has pushed the NS standard cab GE fleet to near extinction. Cook Springs was the only spot between Birmingham and Anniston that would have decent light so I shot it curving back southwest here. The tophat leader is rare, and getting closer to extinction.

I thought this was a home made conversion when I first saw it, but apparently it's one of only 3 known survivors of a 'Tophat' conversion, which was done locally in Poulton-le-Fylde when the car was only a few months old.
It's got both original number plates from a dealer in Crewe, and has done 37k miles.
Quick mini combo. Since I havent put any up in a while. Expecting a buncha packs. So some pole combos to tide you little boys over.
Tophat Dash 9 8760 leads #260 up the hogback east of Dawson, Illinois back in April 2008.
#260 was just one of three regularly scheduled Roadrailer trains that passed thru Springfield back in the day, with occasional appearances from #240 when traffic was running heavy.

Wide angle view of "Tophat" Dash 9 8796 on train #398. Its a shame that these attractive looking units are slated to be converted into modernized widecab AC4400's.

Back when we were all sick of NS power leading 471 nearly every day in 2016, this nice looking standard cab GE and another EMD product are lashed up and elephant style on CP 471 near St Charles at the tail end of fall. Both are off NS’s roster today, of course.
'Twas a colorful evening in Topeka on the BNSF, with two separate trains in town with foreign power on the point. The CSX 3017 west is the KCKEMP that had been tied down in Tecumseh since Sunday night, while the NS 8848 had been on this ballast train in town all day. As NS has been rebuilding some of these "Tophats," I was thrilled to get one leading today, knowing that they may not be long for this world.

🎩 Ladies and gentlemen, tighten your corsets and clutch your playbills—Scene Six descends like a thunderclap in velvet!
What Lies Within. The barn looms ahead, crooked and brooding, its timbers whispering tales of forgotten harvests and secrets best left buried. Helga and Arwyn approach with the caution of seasoned adventurers, their silhouettes framed by the last embers of night.
But what’s this? From the shadowed doorway—gleaming eyes! Not two, not four, but twelve incandescent orbs, blinking in eerie synchrony, watching, waiting. The audience gasps. Helga racks her memory—what creature bears twelve eyes? A myth? A mutation? A mistake?
Before the question can settle, Arwyn bolts, a blur of fur and fury! She charges into the barn with the force of a comet, tail high, claws primed, leaving Helga frozen in the cornfield, heart pounding like a snare drum. The barn swallows her whole, and the eyes vanish into the dark.
What lies within? A reckoning? A revelation? Or something far stranger? Cue the lightning flash, cue the gasp, cue the silence that screams. 🐾🌾️️️
