My husband bought himself a pack of 6 toothbrushes recently. These are still brand new of course. If he changes his brush every 3 months as recommended they will last for 2 years.

Growing on some Nutrient Agar Media...yummy! I did this as an extra exercise because I volunteered for a project and was told to buy a new toothbrush (never eat or drink ANYTHING in the biology lab!). Well, turns out they didn't need me or my toothbrush for the exercise, so I made a slurry from my toothbrush swished in some distilled water in a sterile test tube and did my own experimental streak plate.

This is what grew. Most of what is here is bacteria that grows naturally in your mouth. It didn't stink...that was a good sign!

Macro taken with a standard canon 18 - 55 mm lens using a reversing ring.

Since a friend of mine is borrowing my DSLR, I thought I'd experiment a little bit with my backup point & shoot, a Canon SD450. This is a shot of a toothbrush, the SD450 handheld in conjunction with an Olympus Zuiko (remember those?) 28mm lens, while an end table balanced a flashlight pointing at the toothbrush.

Looking at the waveform you can see that I put my "pickup coil" on the charger the other way around.
