Tower Bridge has a groovy Olympic theme in advance of the London 2012 Olympics in just a few days. That's all good; unfortunately they then ruin it with a light show of apparently randomly generated silly colours after dark. This makes it look like some billionaire from Las Vegas has installed it outside his casino. Classy.

Ding dong! Who? No mate, never heard of him. Why do you people keep calling here? I've told you already, I don't want my windows cleaned. I live on the seventeenth floor. Anyway, I have a MacBook. And no, I'm not interested in joining the wine club, receiving a free no-obligation demo of your super duper vacuum cleaner, or finding out more about Jehovah's Witnesses. Read the meter you say? Busy mate, please come back tomorrow. Sorry.

It's a beautiful thing, an orb web. Spiders all over the world can do something just wonderful. I watched this one in my garden go from nothing to near completed web in just a few short minutes. Quite amazing.

Kings Canyon is a sight to behold. See it to believe it. It's a couple of hundred kilometres from Uluru, and if you're going, it's a quite amazing circular walk with an array of unexpected rock formations and a beautiful oasis hidden in its depths. Takes a few hours, so fit people, water, and sensible shoes required. There are some steep and tricky bits too, so be careful.

Rochester Castle is a twelth century castle with a very well preserved 35 metre tall keep. The first fortifications at this once strategically important site were made by Bishop Gundulf in response to a rebellion against William the Conqueror in 1088. In the following centuries the keep and outer walls were created, and occasionally altered (including when one corner of the keep collapsed during a siege). This is the view of the keep from inside. The four internal floors have been lost to the centuries, but the stonework is strong and majestic.

King Nectanebo (or, more accurately transliterated, Nekhtnebef) lived in Ancient Egypt and began the Thirtieth Dynasty. He deposed and killed his predecessor, King Nefaarud II, who only managed to rule Ancient Egypt for around four months. Nectanebo ruled for a stable 18 years, despite having to fend off the Persians, and built a great many things including the first pylon at Karnak. This quite stunningly beautiful object, now in The British Museum, depicts him in enigmatic relief, and dates from around 370BCE.

...is a series of three ancient Greek temple in Italy's Salerno region. Also on the site is the remains of a Roman town. But the temples, made from limestone around two and a half thousand years ago, are very special and the state of preservation is amazing.

As a hard-edged Londoner, I've always been a city sort of person. There is something of Melbourne that I love, perhaps for the same reasons that London feels like home. This shot perhaps captures a little of it.

I'm not kidding you. There I was, sitting on the beach, knotted hanky protecting the thin bit at the top, and would you Adam-and-Eve it? The heavens opened, and completely washed away my ice cream. It's not easy being a Brit at the seaside.

Following a period of intense rain and then sunshine, my garden is now unmowed and ravaged by weeds. But, in the end, these are wild flowers and they have a mysterious beauty. Actually, I love wild flowers, even common ones like this.

I noticed that the dandelion clocks had an interesting glow at dusk when I was making the short trip from kitchen to composter (oh yes, my green credentials are unblemished, you know). So I got the fixed FP lens out because it apertures up to f1.8, set a highish ISO and expected shallow DOF and noise. This is what got.

I've tweaked it just a tad, because I've discovered I like noise and I wanted to make sure it could be seen, and I deliberately made the flower's head more extremely contrasty. I like it like this, and I might make a large print of it for a green-painted bedroom wall. Let's see what Mrs Nam says...

There he was. Near the railway, just the other side of a chainlink fence. He looked at me, and I looked back. He was not afraid. This beautiful creature and I shared a moment, then he was gone, perhaps to rob old food from a bin, or scream terrifyingly in the dead of night.

Despite being off-air for what seemed like an age due to the lack of hard-wired, wireless or even 3G facilities while I took a short break, I have managed to store up about a thousand images to work through. This one leads the way as an early favourite; it was taken not far from Blakeney Point, in Norfolk (UK). I'll be working my way through them over the next week or so, so look out for more soon.

The sea is beautiful isn't it? This was taken on Rye Harbour beach, at the nature reserve. The groyne is no longer usefully preserving the beach, but it is sea-weathered and somehow beautiful.

I didn't take this. I gave the camera to my five year old. Take note: a FIVE year old. And he pressed the shutter and pop -- out this came. Lens cap, lying around on his grandmother's tablecloth. Ok -- I've made a few corrections in Photoshop for exposure, but otherwise... well, here it is.

I keep telling you it's been raining here, but no one cares. Well, when the rain his gone, the beauty breaks out. For that reason I'm going to forgive those pesky drops. As they say, it's good for the garden. Though if I ever hear anyone say it ever again... well, grrr!

Well, which is it then? An eagle or an owl? I wish they'd make their minds up. Looks like an owl to me, but how would I know? I just snap the things with my Canon.

I asked the keeper at the owl sanctuary if he knew why the owl had bright orange eyes. "So it can see," said the keeper.
