Fly Agaric.
I always think that pictures of mushrooms come in the same category as those of kittens. They make me want to say ‘Awwww… poor ickle things. How sweet…’.
But that may be because I eat too many of them in my salads.
No! Mushrooms. I don’t usually eat kittens! {sigh - I do despair of my audience at times. I’m sure the feeling is mutual :) ).
This is another picture of this cute toadstool, taken in some Suffolk pine woods at West Stow last year but processed today for the Smile on Saturday theme Mushrooms. This one is in the early stage of emerging - gradually it will extend its cap during the day until it’s flat or even slightly convex.
Fly Agarics are so-called because they were used as an insecticide (sprinkled on milk!). They contain two types of hallucinogenic chemicals and are moderately poisonous.
There were several dozen of these in the woods, scattered about. Some were even obligingly sitting on their own little mounds :)
Hope you are all OK and having a lovely weekend.
Thank you for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image.
[Daylight with the camera hand propped on the ground.
Developed in Capture One reducing Clarity and increasing Structure; warming the image up a bit and emphasising the greens of the moss on the right.
Quite a lot of additional work in Nik Viveza: taking down the background and leaf litter; adding light to the top of the stem and evening out the tone and colour on the cap as well as enhancing the structure there.
More tonal and contrast work using filters in Color Efex, with a slight dark vignette centred on the mushwump.
16:9 crop to take out some annoying highlights at the top and some of the foreground, with the toadstool on the thirds line.]
Located in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, The Toadstools or Hoodoos offer a great place to explore. This group of desert rock formations, shaped by wind erosion to resemble mushrooms or toadstools.The balanced rock formations here offer awe-inspiring views that enchant.
The Toadstool catches the last of the light on the edge of Fairbrook Naze.
More often captured at sunrise this wind sculpted rock formation commands stunning views over the Ashop Valley in the High Peak.
The Northern Edges of Kinder Scout are littered with characterful rock outcrops that make for great photographic subjects. This would make a superb high diving platform, apart from the fact that there is no water at the end!
Amanita muscaria (fly agaric)
The toxic mushroom Amanita muscaria, commonly known as "fly agaric."
DescriptionA mushroom, or toadstool, is the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus, typically produced above ground, on soil, or on its food source.
I would love to know something about mushrooms to roam through the woods and enjoy my good prey.
Unfortunately i only know very few mushrooms.

The Toadstool
Oliver Wendell Holmes
THERE 's a thing that grows by the fainting flower,
And springs in the shade of the lady's bower;
The lily shrinks, and the rose turns pale,
When they feel its breath in the summer gale,
And the tulip curls its leaves in pride,
And the blue-eyed violet starts aside;
But the lily may flaunt, and the tulip stare,
For what does the honest toadstool care?
She does not glow in a painted vest,
And she never blooms on the maiden's breast;
But she comes, as the saintly sisters do,
In a modest suit of a Quaker hue.
And, when the stars in the evening skies
Are weeping dew from their gentle eyes,
The toad comes out from his hermit cell,
The tale of his faithful love to tell.
Oh, there is light in her lover's glance,
That flies to her heart like a silver lance;
His breeches are made of spotted skin,
His jacket 'is tight, and his pumps are thin;
In a cloudless night you may hear his song,
As its pensive melody floats along,
And, if you will look by the moonlight fair,
The trembling form of the toad is there.
And he twines his arms round her slender stem,
In the shade of her velvet diadem;
But she turns away in her maiden shame,
And will not breathe on the kindling flame;
He sings at her feet through the live-long night,
And creeps to his cave at the break of light;
And whenever he comes to the air above,
His throat is swelling with baffled love.
Found this lovely group of Toadstools in my garden couldn't resist putting a fairy ornament beside it to call it a fairy toadstool...lol
I didn't have a DSLR along on yesterday's "mushroom mania" hike and had to rely on an iPhone. Today we completed a different section of the trail with camera in tow and as luck would have it, saw very few fungal features - except for these little guys hiding in the shadows. The toadstool fairies were smiling, though, and for a few minutes, there was just a little sunlight coming through the branches to give me a bit of warm light. I think these are Golden Trumpets - or so our "Pocket Guide to Familiar Mushrooms" would suggest.
A landmark rock formation in Utah is called the Toadstools. While they are brightly colored all of the time, near sunset, they glow.
Nebraska. Would love to go back there soon!!
