I think it's a gulf toadfish.

Australian Numbfish are a type of electrc ray. They can deliver an electric shock to stun prey or to deter predators. The Numbfish is an active predator with a distensible mouth which allows it to feed on large bony fishes.

Toadfish @ PLO causway 7/3

The best I could do. It was pretty gloomy down there and hard to focus on the toadfish under the ledge. As soon as the focus light when on, the toadfish retreated further back under the ledge. I guess with those big eyes they are nocturnal and my light was unwelcome.

Here we are doing our surface interval, waiting to do our second dive of the morning. The weather could not have been nicer. And look at that calm water!!

Spring Break Fossil Hike #3. We had two separate programs including a group from Richmond led by Renesha Childs and AmeriCorps intern Carl Smith.

She kept it away from marauding male mergansers for a while, but ultimately lost her prize catch to a persistent male.

Smooth Toadfish - Tetractenos glaber (Fréminville, 1813) [more of this species]

 

This is the most common species of pufferfish in South-eastern Australia. It can be identified by its red eyes, smooth skin and the spotting pattern on its back. This consists of regular sized spots all over with larger spots forming vertical strips on its back. Its tail is clear to yellowish with an orange or at least a yellower lower third.
