Winter Woods - Tree-mendous Tuesday

Seen in the Kerns neighborhood of Portland.

Happy TmT.

I finally found a way to photograph this fascinating tree, and, what's more, I have finally identified it.

The photographic challenge: It stands in a narrow space between a utility pole with all its wires and an adjacent hedge on one side, and a house on the other. To isolate the tree and its gnarled, twisted shape, I had only to look straight up.

That growth form is a large part of the difficulty in identification. In its native range of Europe and Asia, Scots Pine (often called Scotch Pine) is a tall, straight, timber tree. It was imported to North America 400 years ago, but it often grew shorter and twisted here. Botanists have learned to match the variety to the local soil and climate, but when planted as an ornamental, as in this front yard, the twisted trunk and limbs are visually interesting. Mature bark on the lower trunk is generally gray-brown, but it is characteristically scaly and orange on the upper trunk and limbs, as is visible here.

Its rewarding to find little private retreats like this in the city. I'm looking forward to the day when most of my world appears this way, and the hunt for concrete and steel is as minimally fruitful

Happy TmT @all! 😀

Somewhere between Coldharbour and Dorking , at least the road is empty , would not want to meet a tractor or a lorry on this high sided lane . The scene reminds me of a line from Led Zepplin's Stairway to Heaven --- " And as we wind on down the road " . Mind you there is a stretch of road just past Clandon crossroads going away from Guildford that was very twisty back in the 70s and that line would always play just there as I traveled that route regularly back and forth to the same place - ( Aldershot ) !

California's favorite tree.

Happy Tree-mendous Tuesday! This is near the lower parking area at Point Pleasant Park, a huge park in the southwest corner of Halifax city. Akin to NYC's Central Park, it is enjoyed as getaway location by the citizens of Halifax and visitors alike. Interestingly, this parking area is right next to Halifax's container port.

www.chickenburger.com

From their web site:

“The Chick” was opened in 1940 and is reputed to be the oldest drive-in restaurant in Canada. Today, the historical landmark remains a community icon as a destination for families and friends alike.

Throw a tune on the jukebox while you enjoy great food in the nostalgic 50’s setting. This iconic 50’s inspired diner provides a snapshot into the past, with both indoor and outdoor seating.

For over 80 years, The Chickenburger has maintained a reputation of excellence by providing high quality fresh food and superb customer service. The same chicken recipe crafted in 1940 is still used to ensure customers keep coming back for the same great taste."

From me:

"PLUS their staff are darned friendly!"

I'll have more shots and/or a collage soon from the visit...

Unedited...this place needs no fluffing, and yes, the water really is that lovely blue/green color year round. I cropped out the bridge and the scary swans though

Happy Tree-mendous Tuesday! One from last October here. A small stand of Caledodnian pines silhouetted against the dawn sky. As the sun rose the entire eastern sky was suffused with an orange glow. Shot using the Sony HX300
