It is my second attempt photographing mushrooms, and is my very first in creating a glowing mushroom shot. Surely need to learn more about it. Not enough details in the mushrooms, not enough skills in lighting them. Will try again. Comments, tips and tricks are welcome.

A bit out of focus with my new cam, I have a little trouble getting this right as the focus does go a little here and there, lol.

If you have any tips and tricks I would be happy to know, can I get it to be focused where I want the focus, like straight on a dot and not spreading?

But I love it even though.

It's after all my first.

I was processing this exposure bracketing as a therapy for my soul, i.e. slowly, savouring every detail and every step of the process. Then I had news from a Flickr friend of mine and they make me decide to finish and post it sooner than planned, with a dedication to her. So it is here, and the fact that it is linked in my mind to a very specific person should not prevent everyone else to hopefully enjoy it - which is the most precious reward I can hope to get.

For details about the location and occasion of the shot, please refer to The Core.

The buildings in the background are the sad remains of an old, disused farmstead.

I have obtained this picture by blending a 5-exposure bracketing [-2.0/-1.0/0/+1.0/+2.0 EV] by luminosity masks with the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4. I tried the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic as a possible final contribution to the processing, which especially improved the ploughed field in the foreground.

RAW files processed with Darktable.

With the official opening of Hair Fair 2016 only hours away, I'm excited to bring you this Mask and Mien Special Report!

This image is from the same morning as my video, A new sunrise. It was a windy, glorious morning; the air was crystal clear, the world still quiet and asleep... just me and the sea, under a rapidly changing sky. It has been a though editing, due to the clouds shifting their position across my exposure bracketing. I have overcome the issue by a rather simple, inelegant, yet effective trick - not a general solution to the problem though, since I have been able to apply it uniquely due to the simple, plain horizon provided by the sea. Well, however the journey has been rather fruitful and I hope that it can radiate positive feelings through the grayness of the weather - here in the Padan Plain we call it "il tempo dei morti" (i.e. "the weather of the dead", relying on the fact that the word "tempo" means both "a period in time" and "the weather").

I have processed this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-1.3/-0.67/0/+0.67/+1.3 EV] by luminosity masks with the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal" exposure shot), then I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.

Along the journey I tried the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic, which has contributed a lot, although rather subtly, to the final result. Raw files processed with Darktable.

Yesterday afternoon I took my bike and camera and went into the woods near my house in hope to find some mushrooms. Well there was not much to be found. I took a string of tiny lights with me because I saw a video of Daan de Vos were he used them to create a bokeheffect. I was struggeling with my sx because the effect is totally different from a DSRL. Back home I was not satisfied at all so I used the blur effect in filterstorm again and this is the outcome. I can live with this and hope you like it to allthough its not straight out of the camera :-)

Ok, I know I may have posted a few of this guy in all his glory, but I don't get out to DC that often and I got what could while there.

It also helped that I had someone else with me, Tom, that was also working on his photography as a craft, so we were discussing photography a lot, which helped me focus more as I showed him tips and tricks.

This was a sunrise shoot that was sensational. We walked away with several images, one of which is now hanging in metal on Tom's wall! This was not my favorite at first so it kind sat for a while. When I finally got around to processing it I actually fell in love with it and now its one of my favorites, I love the colors, the look, and the idea that you can take something so rock solid, like Lincoln and his palace and then twist it using a fish eye lens to show it as if it were fluid. That was fun on a literal level, but also symbolically. Government is always changing, twisting and turning, its fluid. So is life! You think everything is one way, then life throws you a curve ball and everything changes.

I took this photograph in Canyonlands National Park from the are of Green River Overlook Point.

This scene is from my first sunrise session in Milano Marittima - the rainy one. It has been a tough beast to process, not least due to some raindrops on my lens - they were barely noticeable before I began the journey of post-processing, but they came out rather prominenty as the scene was taking its shape and mood. To say it in civil words, those raindrops did not contribute to the scene, since they resulted in regions of altered hues in the sky and at the water's edge. I have somehow managed to clone the most intruding ones out, but I would be glad to hear from you if you can make out where they were, as a way to measure how good my healing work has been.

I loved this simple breakwater, since it made for a nice interesting element from many point of views. Here I have chosen the classic central perspective, with obvious yet always fascinating implications. This morning has been the most lonely one, due to the bad weather, and there a deep silence hovered about the place - at least until the bulldozer came to level the sand and haul away driftwood and other little mementos the receding high tide had laid off on the water's edge, readying the beach for another tourists' day.

COMING SOON - I have exciting news (I hope so, at least)... It might be that I am going to upload something really new for me, most probably next week. ;-) See you soon!

Dear friends, I am realizing that my archives are rich in forsaken treasures – yes, I know that in those days of lockdown you all are realizing the very same thing ;-)

This picture comes from a sunrise session at my favourite location, the meanders of the river Adda, dating from April 2015. I would avoid to nag you about this incredibly wonderful location: you can take a look at my album Silent banks, the complete collection of the photos I have taken there; the attached narratives are rich in information about the place, if you are curious enough.

This location is especially renowned for its legendary morning mists, but only a thin layer of milky mist floated above the water that morning.

I have picked this specific bracketing for a number of reasons (including the dewdrops you can see on the grass in the foreground), but I suspect that its main merit lays in giving me a feeling of opening to new possibilities. In the same vein, I believe that this pandemic will open a whole world of new paths for us to travel along. After the pain and the sorrow, after having regained the closeness we had taken for granted for so much time before the storm abruptly took it away from us… After we have risen from the ashes of Covid-19 we will be bound to take seriously a huge lot of lessons that this (not even alive) tiny speck of proteins and RNA has taught us. We will have to unveiling our souls because everyone’s soul counts – everyone can contribute to a new way of living, just as now the raging infection requires that everyone accepts and practises the lockdown – and everyone has a role to play in this common struggle.

I have obtained this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-1.7/0/+1.7 EV] by luminosity masks in the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal exposure" shot), then, as usual, I added some final touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.

I tried the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic as a possible final contribution to the processing. While this technique (which, its imposing name notwith standing, is pretty simple to implement) often holds interesting results in full daylight landscapes, its effects on a low-light capture (e.g. a sunrise) are utterly unpredictable, so at the end of my workflow I often give it a try to ascertain its possibilities. In this picture I have exploited this technique in a very frugal, yet effective, way – just some touches where needed.

RAW files has been processed with Darktable. Denoising with DFine 2 and the Gimp (denoised and original images blended by lightness).

I have returned to my favourite, magical location, the secret little world enclosed by the lazy meanders of the river Adda just downstream the eastern arm of the lake Como (its real name being Lario), just before it begins to flow into the Padan Plain. It is a hidden gem under everyone's eyes - surrounded as it is by busy roads, towns, and productive sites, as soon as you get on the river's banks you feel like you have entered an entirely different world. I think that the wetlands nestled between the meanders have preserved the place, making it less than amenable to settlements (but very amenable to a sheer variety of birds).

At 5° C and a substantially clean sky, I would have bet on the place being very misty, as it almost always is at early morning. Luckily I didn't, since I would have lost. The air was crystal clear, the place devoid of its usual mysterious ambiance (visit my album Silent banks to get an idea). I was lucky enough that Autumn was extremely generous with its treasures, and my sunrise session was not to go wasted, after all.

I was walking downstream, almost convinced that it was time to go back home, when a couple of twin old, large plane trees captured my attention. While framing, in the most serendipitous way, I was abruptly aware of the interplay of lights and shadows that was quietly unfolding behind my back while I was walking, a perfect yin and yang of day and night at the boundary between the two opposite poles - and that golden, fiery speck of a young plane tree right at the center of the dance, set against the dark hillside. Since such light conditions can last mere minutes, I hurriedly set up my tripod to capture the drama, not caring about the grass in the foreground being decently sharp or not.

I hope that you enjoy this new post of mine and wish you a nice Sunday.

Along the journey I tried the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic, which has contributed a lot to the rendering of the trees and reflections on the right side of the framing, enhancing the light transfixing the foliage. Raw files processed with Darktable.

At the border of the high Padan Plain, just at the feet of the first line of the Prealps, there lays a string of five lakes. They draw a line that is the base of the so-called Larian triangle, i.e. the triangle-shaped mountainous land between the two arms of the Lake Como (also called Lario). These lakes, often called the Lakes Briantei, or the Brianza Lakes (from the name of that land, Brianza), are way smaller than the Lario and the other great lakes of Northern Italy - just a string of beads in the higher plain - but they share the beauty of their larger cousins, although on a smaller, more intimate scale. I have always felt quite strongly the fascination of their common origin, which dates from the end of the Würm glaciation, some 11,700 years ago. I can easily see in my mind the enormous, mighty glaciers from the Alps flowing beyond the last mountains and spreading through the high plain. A powerful sight, indeed... Yet all that glory was deemed to end as the climate was becoming warmer, and eventually the glaciers began to recede, leaving behind deep ditches and huge semilunar terminal morains. You can easily fill in the story - the melting waters, the swamps, the debris from the looming mountains, and, eventually, the lakes.

Well, this is not a lesson in geology - I am by no means an expert, just a guy who perceives geology in a deeply emotional way (quite possibly a trait acquired from my late father, who was a passionate amateur mineral and fossil prospector).

I have begun a photographic exploration of those relics of the last glaciation, the Lakes Briantei. At sunrise, of course.

My first session was at the Lake Annone, the largest one, that is divided in two basins by a narrow peninsula. I limited myself to the Western basin, mostly looking Eastward.

This is a detail landscape showing, if needed, how a grand landscape may have smaller, complete landscapes nestled within itself. There could be many landscapes-within-a-landscape, every photographer might perceive and discover new ones. I loved this detail, as a gap between the mountains lets the eye run further and further away, following the outlines of distant mountains as the air becomes more and more transfixed with golden light, until it reaches the lone, elegant outline of the Pizzo dei Tre Signori (= "Peak of the Three Lords", a name stemming from the historical division of the area that it marked, between the State of Milan, the Republic of Venice and the Grisons canton of Switzerland). I am bound to this mountain by epic, adventurous memories from my youth and this quantum tunnel beams both my eye and my mind from the lake directly to that proud peak (which is some 30 km away), as the enticing, sparkling reflections on the waters of the lake make my soul dance. I hope that the photo is good enough to stir emotions within your heart as well... Have a happy Sunday!

I have processed this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-2.0/-1.0/0/+1.0/+2.0 EV] by luminosity masks with the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal" exposure shot).

Along the journey - post-processing always is a journey of discovery to me - I tried the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic to give a slight tonal boost to several parts of the scene. As usual, I gave the finishing touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4.

Raw files processed with Darktable.

This shot comes from my archives dating from Summer 2015, when we had a vacation in Catalunya (Calella and Barcelona). My sunrise session at Cala de la Vinyeta was coming to an end; the sun was slowly rising above the horizon, just beyond the rocks - those Maresme pink granite rocks which slowly turns into a beautiful grainy, rosy sand. I had overlooked this shot because… well, I have no idea why. The relevant thing is that I have unearthed it now, mainly because of the curvy, sparkling line painted by the backwash on the seashore. An everchanging path towards the light springing from the horizon. A memento of what my life shoud be: a journey from darkness towards the light. Since this is the (highly non-linear) journey of a lifetime, I am – or should be – humbly along the way. However just now you and I are fellow travellers, and I feel that the best thing I can do for you, just now, is to share this path of light.

Before the usual notes about processing (sorry, being one of the strange beasts librarians are I somehow must describe the process behind the photo), I have to tell you that I have played with some unusual, precious features of an unusual, precious free program called Chasys Draw IES Artist by John Paul Chatcha. Very interesting features indeed; just as an example, I have tried “heuristic rescaling” and in a flash I have got a 2x2 high quality enlargement of my original image (from 4946x3280 px to 9892x6560 px). What I have actually implemented in this picture, as an experiment asking for your potential criticism, is “smart resize”, which allows to change the proportions of the frame from 3:2 to 16:9 in… well, in a smart way (e.g. I selected the cliff on the left to have it retaining its original proportions) ;-)

Although I must state that this program cannot possibly supersede the Gimp in my workflow, I warmly advice you to try the “special” features of Chasys Draw IES Artist.

While this technique (which, its imposing name notwithstanding, is pretty simple to implement) often holds good results in full daylight landscapes, its effects on a low-light capture (e.g. a sunrise) are utterly unpredictable, so at the end of my workflow I often give it a try to ascertain its possibilities. Here I have blurred a bit the inverted Blue channel layer.

RAW files has been processed with Darktable (I am trying experimenting with RawTherapee, but in no satisfactory way for now). Denoising with DFine 2 and the Gimp (denoised and original images blended by luminance).
