The job of a timing chain is to keep the pistons and valves perfectly synchronized. However, it wears out after a certain time interval and thus needs to be replaced. Timing and Spacing by Mark Jackson

Timing in animation is the speed of an action, it has a rhythm in the action. Timing is important for animation because it sets the time between each key pose, this allows for a realistic feel when animating. Spacing is how each of these frames are spaced out, example above, both balls moving from right to left have the same timing, they have the number of frames each but the spacing of the bottom compared to the top is different. This allows for smoother movements or sharp movements, the bottom will slow out from frame 1, speed up at the middle and slow in at the end. The top will start at the same speed and continue at the same speed until stopped.

Same timing but different spacing can change something from looking jerky and robotic to realistic and believable.
