In partnership with Shared_Studios, Times Square Arts brings the TimesSquare_Portal to the Broadway Plaza between 46th & 47th Street, allowing Times Square visitors to interact with people across thirty locations in twenty countries as though they are in the same room. The interactive public art installation will run from October 10 to November 21, 2017. All are invited to book free timed reservations in the Portal at www.TimesSquarePortal.com. Walk-ins are also welcome.
Shared_Studios' Portals are gold shipping containers equipped with immersive audio-visual technology. When participants enter one, they come face-to-face, live and full-body, with someone in an identical space somewhere else on earth. Portals exist in diverse locations including technology hubs, refugee camps, art museums, community centers, and public plazas. Locations include Afghanistan, Germany, Honduras, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Mexico, Myanmar, Pakistan, Palestine, Panama, Rwanda, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, Vietnam, and Yemen.
Each of the nearly seven weeks of this installation will explore a specific theme: Public Space, Food, Migration, Performance, Identity, Change, and Gratitude. In addition to hosting dialogues between individuals, the TimesSquare_Portal will host special conversations, meals, musical performances, and more. times square is, generally speaking, a sort of overloaded, media-saturated, lights-and-bustle spectacular of the sort that very rapidly gives me sensory overload and a desire to just go sit down somewhere where there isn't anybody. all that said, it's still an impressive achievement in the area of soul-destruction and wasting-of-resources, and should be acknowledged as such. it's also worth noting as probably the only place in america (outside of vegas) that quite achieves this effect...
Midnight Moment: Jason Akira Somma, Times_Square_Analog_Portrait

Jason Akira Somma is a filmmaker and choreographer who investigates how we experience, process, and participate in the cultural systems that surround us. Times_Square_Analog_Portrait is a conceptual portrait of one of the most distinctive aspects of the neighborhood: the spectacular electronic billboards that display advertisements — and the Midnight Moment program itself. The work is part of Somma’s series of institutional portraits designed to reflect the environment of the presenting institution or platform. Somma created Times_Square_Analog_Portrait from footage of the electronic billboards, video feedback enlivened with hand-operated camera movements, and signal manipulation using electromagnetic and light frequency information he recorded in Times Square on custom analog devices.

Drive-by Remix (2017) features Nick Cave’s Soundsuits in motion. Colorful textiles spin exuberantly across the screen as the Soundsuits somersault and roll, fall from the sky, bounce on pogo sticks, and dance across an endless white field. Amidst the energetic movement, a figure adorned with a stop sign appears, conveying an underlying sense of urgency in the jubilant expression of freedom.
