I cant process pictures today

And its the fault of Apple, Buy.com and the Department of Defense

If you are like me and take LOTS of pictures, like me you burn through hard drives like drugs at a Guns and Roses concert. I arrived in Afghanistan with 3.5TB of hard drive space. it wasnt enough. About a month ago I began using a "backup" drive for primary storage. Not good. I am a firm believer that if it is not backed up, it doesnt exist. So I started the grand shuffle two move stuff and insure proper backups. That is where Apple and Time Machine threw a wrench into things.

If you have a Mac and dont use Time Machine you are missing one of the true love/hate relationships of all time. It is hands down the best backup system ever. Nothing to think about, it just works. Unfortunately it seems to sense when I REALLY need my IO bus and my Hard Drives and choose that moment to start backing things up. Probably not an issue on a new laptop or desktop Mac but mine is about to turn 5. Thats like 100 in computer years. So Everything bogs down and I have to go kill time machine and waste a lot of time. The other issue is the way it backs things up. it works great but you had better get a REALLY big drive and do nothing else with it. I made the mistake of thinking my 1TB WD MyBook would be enough for both my pictures and my time machine. Both eat space. Time machine ate 175GB and my images ate the rest. I was down to 3GB when I realized this. Ok, that was my fault and pretty stupid. No problem I thought, Ill just move time machine to a new 1TB drive that I had brought empty for just such an occasion. WRONG!!

It seems that Apple decided to use "special" means to create time machine files and they cant be moved. EVER. Try to copy them and you will get an epic fail and a bunch of wasted space. Ok, I am sure someone has solved this problem and Google will point the way. I got lots of details on the issue and one solution - Carbon Copy Cloner . CCC will make a block level copy, to include your Time Machine. Great. There are a whole bunch of conditions that have to be met and chief among those is the target drive has to be as big or bigger than the source. Makes sense. Only My WD 1TB drive and my Hitachi 1TB drive were not the same size. For some reason the Hitachi was 1MB smaller. Not 1GB, 1 MB. CCC refused to copy my time machine. ARGH!!! TIme to buy a new drive.

Ok, truth time - I have a hard drive "issue." I want more. And more bigger. If a 1TB is good than 2TB is better and 3TB.....ohhhhhh. And I am done with USB. Too slow. Firewire or eSATA all the way. SO "needing" a new HD was a nice excuse. More truth - I hate paying even one extra penny per GB than I have to. $.06 a GB is my current target. You can get cheeper but I also prefer Wester Digital and they are not cheep. When you routinely shoot over 1000 image at 16MB a pop, you fill GBs, and spend $.06 each, fast!! Ok, So I am looking for an inexpensive, quad interface 2TB HD. And I happen to find one at Buy.com that also includes a built-in USB hub! Score!!! So I order it, get my confirmation email and start plotting my data movement. 3 hours later I get a text message from my son. Buy.com had just called him. See, the phone number on file with Buy.com is now his phone. They ask for ______ (we have the same first name) and if he had just bought a hard drive. He says no. Buy.com cancels my order. And my account. I try to contact support. You need an account. I send a message to support using the "guest" setting. No response. Wait a week. Send another. No response. I say bad words.

I give up after a week and go hunting for a drive. I find one at NewEgg. NewEgg ships to APO - for $20. Same package delivered to my hose is free shipping. Never mind an APO address is essentially a US address - zip code and all. The post office doesn't charge one dime extra. So I pay and wait. 3 days later I get an email saying it shipped. It would have been at my hose already normally. Finally after 2 weeks it arrived yesterday and I started backing up. Backing up a TB takes a LONG time. Like 16 hours. At 14 hours I got up to go to the bathroom. I bumped the cable and unplugged the firewire. FAIL!! Start over. More bad words. I have 2 hours left again......

The Pataphysical Time Machine has awakened!

In May 2021, the good doctors at Pataphysical Studios started gathering again in our enchanted art garden, to resume work on our collective art project.

We didn’t waste any time getting the Time Machine up and running again:

• Dr. Fabio brought Dr. Albert Einstein back to life as an illuminated talking head in his Dreamer artwork, along with Greta Thunberg;

• Dr. Geo and David installed a new porthole, whose motorized iris will open and close to reveal these illustrious characters;

• Dr. Rindbrain added a magical spinning hand to our exhibit, while painting new shoes and animals for friends and family;

• Dr. Really set up a sub-anal sound system under our cosmic bench, aptly decorated by Dr. Skidz.

• Dr. Heatshrink put the finishing touches on his illuminated jewelry box;

• Dr. Firebird served us refreshments and prepared to paint her Rosebud panel;

• Dr. Truly came all the way from the far reaches of the North Bay to say hi and hand out lovely patches;

• Many other doctors came to shoot the breeze in the front deck: Drs. Judy, Tout d’Suite and Zboon, to name but a few.

We hope you enjoy these videos and photos of our first time back together in over a year, due to the pandemic. It’s been such a pleasure to reconnect with our old art pals and celebrate the return of the spring together. Let's hope this is only the start of a new Post-Pandemic Age of Enlightenment. Vive la machine à explorer le temps!

i decided to write a letter to Santa this week :-) this completes my:

" Xmas wish letter / My top 7 favourite movie items-gadgets"

#1 - flying delorean time machine (back to the future 2 version)

thanks to the flux capacitor this baby could travel in time and get you in all sorts of space-time paradoxes that could destroy the universe :-O but besides that cool feature you have to agree this is a pretty amazing car (inspired by the lotus esprit design go figure) this version could fly and with the "mr fusion" thingy it could generate more than 1.21 gigawatts of electricity from garbage (and don't get me bttf3 crap that you still need fuel for the ignition 'cuz that's just wrong - in 2015 they got mr fusion to replace gas, so i'm forgetting part 3 crap - i'm saying this is a complete green car)!

and we saw on part 1 that doc brown had invented a remote for this car (but i'm using my 007 phone for it ) AND just to finish (kick all your pimp my ride fans asses) it lights up neon lights all around and disappears leaving burning trail marks :-O

runner up:

the hover-board from the future, it doesn't do much and not even works on water but ever since i saw the movie i want one :-)

My MOC of the Back to the Future LEGO set. Uses mostly the parts found in that set with some obvious additions.

Set is now modular, so to switch between the three main versions from the films requires swapping out some parts.

Been planning this for years and slowly building up a library of techniques in my head so if you see a build you recognise then credit to the original builder.

I have an EeePC 901 running osx ofcourse and want to use the given desktopspace as practical as i can and.. neatlooking..

I removed the (ugly..) clock from the menubar since i have it on the desktop and i dont always want to know the time .. hmm..

Geektool shows me ramusage of apps and total usage, date and time and my very simple todo-list..

Ah ! Si seulement la gestion du temps pouvait se limiter à actionner le réglage en plus ou en moins...

I've always wondered if managing the time could be as easy as tweaking the plus or minus setting...

First sketches and models for the Time Machine, a new interactive art project created by Pataphysical Studios.

In this brainstorm session, each team member sketched out their own ideas, then discussed them with the group, to design our upcoming time travel experience together.

Next, we plan to create a composite design with some of these ideas, to integrate them into a single blueprint.

To be continued ...

One of the quickest refrains of the Apple Haters is the suggestion that I was never a PC user, which is a strange assertion if you check out my Steam ID.

You see, I've been a member since September 24, 2003, that's almost 5 years before Steam was available (through Crossover Games) for the Mac.

I guess I could have used Apple's Time Machine to go back...

I wished I could save her in some sort of time machine

Know all your enemies

We know who our enemies are

We will fold and freeze together

Far away from here

There is sun and spring and green forever

But now we move to feel

For ourselves inside some stranger's stomach

Place your body here

Let your skin begin to blend itself with mine

Back to the Future

The DeLorean Time Machine

We presented our Time Machine at Marinovators 2017, an annual showcase for young makers in Marin County.

Our Time Machine was created by the Maker Art class taught by Fabrice Florin and Edward Janne at the Lycée Français in Sausalito in winter 2017. Our 4th and 5th graders designed and built their own scenes from the past, present and future -- from the age of dinosaurs to the 50th century. This interactive art exhibit combines art, technology and storytelling -- using Arduino, motions, lights and sounds.

Many of our students and their parents were on hand to demonstrate this innovative after-school project to dozens of visitors of all ages. Everyone seemed to enjoy their experience, and it was a great opportunity for the kids to get the recognition they deserve. This innovative after-school project helps children develop their creative and collaborative skills -- and the confidence that they can help change the world.

We hosted this exhibit with Tam Makers, our makerspace in Mill Valley, where many of the artifacts for the Time Machine were fabricated, based on the children’s designs. We also invited visitors to make their own Tam Makers badges with LEDs, laser cut shapes, and color markers. They created some ingenious badges, and wore them proudly at the show.

It was a great way to celebrate art and science and encourage children to build a better world.

Marinovators took place on Saturday, April 22, from 10am to 3pm, at the College of Marin in Kentfield. Our Tam Makers booth was in Room #245 in the new Academic Center.
