Macro Mondays: Imperfection theme

This is a chipped Rookwood ceramic (architectural) tile. I think it is a beautiful specimen even though it is imperfect. In addition to the chips, there are a few scratches and a bit of dust. You can see the whole tile in the comment below. (It has been rotated 180 degrees)

The tile measures 6" in length--the portion you see in this photo is about 2" of it.

Where were you last night?

The ivanas of the Khiva palaces are the brightest preserved monuments of woodcarving and celestial ceramics. Author of this tiles was the Abdullah with the resounding nickname Jinn (he worked in Khiva of the early 19th century).

These tiles were hand made in Southern France. Each one was different and I had to grade and select them for an acceptable finish, to try to emulate the skill that went into making them.

This tile roof is rather brutal not least because of its riverside setting. However in a crop it is rather striking.

Clay roofing tiles made entry into India only around 1865, introduced by Christian missionaries from Germany. This pattern of tiles is known as Mangalore tiles, as the first factory was set up in Mangalore. This tile pattern was originally invented in France and is known as Marseille tiles across the world.

The Spanish love their glazed colourful tiles and use them on floors, on walls, inside and outside, made with great Artistry and creativity, they liven up the place and are part of the architecture.

These were 4 flights of stairs, a real eye-teaser.

Standing in front of it, it looked like a tall wall, I asked a model to go and sit on the first landing, free and comfortable, not posed.

I have it with all the steps, but the place was surrounded by palm trees, it was impossible to get a picture without shadow, this was over the midday= the least favourable moment to take a photograph, so I decided to go for a closer comp.

Beautiful, "well-preserved stoves of various sizes and unique forms, decorated with colourful and very original ornaments" are one of the most interesting details of the interior of Karol Scheibler's residence in Łódź. "They are particular masterpieces of the art of ceramics. The tiles were imported among others from a pottery workshop of Seidel in Dresden as well as from a company Villeroy et Boch from Mettlach, which was well-known across Europe."
