Toynbee tile: 37th and Walnut Streets, Philadelphia, PA.

For more information, see "Resurrect Dead: Uncovering What Lies Beneath," my review of Jon Foy's film Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles, and the Wikipedia article "Toynbee tiles."

Update: A road resurfacing obliterated this tile in early August, 2012.

Painted as a Christmas gift for my parents. They have bird feeders outside the house, and when I was growing up I learned about the different kinds of birds from looking out the window. Cardinals are a long-time favorite.

Colorful tiles for sale at the "flea market" area in the school lot across from the eastern market.

Really nice butterfly tiles by Pomona Tile. We have a few others tucked away - I think they are more turquoise than red. From being nice to a seller on "that auction site" who had a stash of single tiles he needed a good home for.

The dots are raised glazing - and the lower right dot appears to have been pried off by an inquisitive person at some point in the past - although it could have been damaged by incidental contact. If we install it someday - it should be a fairly easy fix to create a solution to the appearance.

More tiling was done in the shower room.

Inspection, person heard a loud report like a pop and then sound like breaking glass while watching television and found this.

Tile not back buttered, minimal thinset transfer to back of tile and set up against verticle surface with no expansion. TCA handbook for ceramic tile installation sites astm standard for that no tile is to be set and or grouted against verticle surfaces.

Architectural ceramics have a long history in Islamic art. Walls, vaults, domes and floors of secular and religious buildings, particularly palaces, mausoleums, mosques, schools and shrines, were often decorated with sumptuous polychrome ceramic tilework. Many of the tiles on display here are lustre painted and display characteristic calligraphic, floral and zoomorphic designs. Dating from the medieval period, they were produced in Kashan, the centre of Persian luxury ceramics. The large twelve-pointed star with an interlaced design is the only artifact in the collection from the Timurid period (1370-1506). It once adorned the madrasa of Khargird in northeastern Iran. The tiles from post-Reconquista Spain, several of which feature Andalusian Islamic motifs, underscore the influence of Islamic architectural ceramics in Europe and highlight the sometimes forgotten cross-cultural intercinnectedness between Europe and the Muslim world.

Tiles in the casa de Murillo in Seville. Blue and white is a very sixteenth century preference, but these ones add yellow and a splash of green for a more lively feel. I also like the op-art effect of the little cubes.

Lovely old shop - the interior was tremendous.

The shop also sold RNLI merchandise and was staffed by some really cheerful, helpful, chatty people.

The shop is just round the corner from a scene of outrage - I saw on the web the other day that some family had been traumatised by the sight of fish on the quayside!

This tile was created for Kelly Barone CZT's new studio. She had invited CZTs to send over a Z-string tile. I felt that I'd went overboard with the first (this tile), so I created a simpler, second tile.

In Chiloé Island, Chile, traditional houses are entirely covered in wood tiles, measuring aroung 60x10 cm each (aprox. 24x4"). Originally all tiles were straight, but each owner tried to make his home unique by cutting the tiles in different shapes. Different styles emerged, and when shapes alone were not enough, owners started to combine, arrange and paint to create unique styles. The result is a immense variety of wood tiling.

In this collection I tried to show a selection of wood tilings, and I also tried to create a coding for identifying unique tiles and arrangements.

You should watch this Large On Black since that brings out more details. My pictures aren't balanced for a white background and a lot of the finer details are lost in this small format.
