I created a (windows) application for merging single tiles into one big image, because of Flash cannot handle a bigger BitmapData object than 2880x2880 px.

It's free, so feel free to use it.

We recently had our kitchen re-done. The idea was to draw some designs for the tiling behind the cooker. Unfortunately, the varnish I brushed on the tiles to protect the designs wiped the tiles clean of the ink! The moral of the story... don't draw on treated tiles for anything other than purely ephemeral images...

This is one of the tile designs that survived...

When it opened in 1906, Victoria Baths on Hathersage Road, Manchester, was described as the most splendid municipal bathing institution in the country and a water palace of which every citizen of Manchester can be proud. Not only did the building provide spacious and extensive facilities for swimming, bathing and leisure, it was built of the highest quality materials with many period decorative features:- stained glass, terracotta, tiles and mosaic floors.

Victoria Baths served the people of central Manchester for 87 years and established themselves in the affections of all those who used the facilities.

The Baths were closed by Manchester City Council in 1993. The Friends of Victoria Baths was formed and began to investigate the possibility of running the Victoria Baths independently.

Various fund-raising attempts failed to bring about a restoration of the Baths, although work to prevent the further dereliction of the building started in 1998.

In September 2003, the Baths won the first series of the BBC's Restoration programme. The building was chosen by a public phone-vote from a short-list of ten buildings in danger of dereliction in the UK. It was awarded £3.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the money raised through the phone-voting process. The Prince of Wales visited the baths a month later to help celebrate the win.

It was intended that the money would be spent on re-opening the Turkish bath by around 2006, with other parts following later at a cost of around £15 - 20m. However, the redevelopment plans were dealt a blow one year later when quantity surveyors delivered a much larger estimate of £6.3m to restore the Turkish baths. The Heritage Lottery Fund requested further details about the full redevelopment before they would hand over any money for the first phase. Final planning approval to begin a restoration process was not received until September 2005.

In September 2006, as part of a number of events to mark the centenary of the building's opening, the gala pool was filled for the first time in 13 years.

The first phase of restoration work consisting of structural work and repairs began on Monday 19 March 2007 and was completed in September 2008.

In 2011 the Baths were used as a filming location, a concert venue and an exhibition centre.

The interior has been seen in film and TV dramas such as Cracker, Prime Suspect, Bedlam, Life On Mars and Mrs Biggs.

On 7th November 2012, the Marketing team from The Co-operative Insurance spent their community challenge day at Victoria Baths, scrubbing, cleaning, mopping, vaccing and carrying to help the volunteers of the restoration of this fantastic building. This is the photo diary of that day.

The Athangudi tiles are popular handmade decorative floor tiles, originating from the Chettinadu region of Tamil Nadu. Athangudi tiles are traditionally designed and completely handmade, which add charm to the interiors of a house. These flower tiles of Athangudi stands out for its class, bringing forth the rich cultural heritage of the Karaikudi. The raw materials used for making athangudi tiles are the local soil, cement, baby jelly and synthetic oxides.

Sand will be finely sieved and used as base material for the tile. colour oxide mixes were poured over a glass fitted with a tile mould.

the worker made the design by hand or sometimes uses moulds. over the colour dye, cement and sands were sprinkled and later pressed with a layer of cement and kept under sun to dry. The dried tiles are transferred to a water tank for curing.

after the process is over the tile is taken out of water bath and the front glass will be removed to get beautiful handmade tile, ready to use in floorings.

Solarised flowers and used tile effect as well.

I installed the tile and created a mosaic band. I was inspired by the hilly terrain where we live. Used broken tiles that were here at the property when we bought it.

Country of tiles

Our roof is tiled with artificial slates. They are made of some sort of slightly porous ceramic. They are coated with paint when they are new. Since our roof about 25 years old, the paint has disappeared, leaving the slightly pourous roof slates, and quite a lot of moss which has grown on top.

Salesmen come to our door to offer roof-painting services. They swear blind that the roof is probably leaking, and that the roof-boarding, metal frame and walls of the house will be damaged. They are probably right. From standing on the roof it seems that the boarding is not as strong as it was - a bit spongey. From the inside, there is still no water getting through, but it will not be long.

Since the moss has to be removed first, painting the roof is quite a big job.

Another company, the maker of the house, recommended putting another metal roof on top.

After surveying the options we found a place that would retile the roof using artificial slates (a rare service these days since so many homes use either ceramic or metal tiles) for about the same price as having it painted.

But all the same, that would be a cool $13000 USD.

So, partly due to experiences on top of a barn when I was 17, I tried painting a small area of the roof mysefl, with bitumen (as shown above).

Special slate paint is on sale, but it is just exterior paint and I agree it would require that the moss be removed. This would involve steam-cleaning the roof, hiring or purchasing a steam cleaner, and a lot of work.

Bitumen on the other hand seems to sink into the moss and tiles leaving a not particularly attratctive but seemingly waterproof surface of tar. The other thing is that it is very cheap, only 28 dollars for large bucket sized cans. I think that 4 cans would be sufficient. The special roofing tile paint is 4 times the price. We could paint it on with brooms.

So do you think that I should paint my roof with bitumen?

If we don't like it we could always have the roof retiled.

In Chiloé Island, Chile, traditional houses are entirely covered in wood tiles, measuring aroung 60x10 cm each (aprox. 24x4"). Originally all tiles were straight, but each owner tried to make his home unique by cutting the tiles in different shapes. Different styles emerged, and when shapes alone were not enough, owners started to combine, arrange and paint to create unique styles. The result is a immense variety of wood tiling.

In this collection I tried to show a selection of wood tilings, and I also tried to create a coding for identifying unique tiles and arrangements.

Good grief! What! Me worry? The Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center is a museum dedicated to the works of cartoonist Charles Schulz, creator of the Peanuts comic strip. The museum is located in Santa Rosa, California.

There are not only floor tiles, but wall tiles that are beautiful too!
