#macromondays #checkered

I decided to share this image for the upcoming #macromondays theme called #checkered

The term checkered has multiple meanings depending on the context:

1. Pattern

In design and visual contexts, checkered refers to:

A pattern made up of alternating squares, typically in two contrasting colors, such as black and white.

It is commonly seen in items like checkered flags (used in racing), tablecloths, clothing, or tiles.

Variations include:

Regular checkered: Uniform, equally-sized squares.

Irregular checkered: Squares may vary in size or arrangement.

2. Metaphorical Meaning

In a figurative sense, checkered describes:

A history, career, or past with mixed fortunes or events, often containing both successes and failures or good and bad times.

Example: "He had a checkered past, marked by both notable achievements and controversies."

3. Other Contexts

Geography/Maps: "Checkered" might describe a landscape or map divided into squares or parcels.

Textiles: In fabric design, it’s one of the oldest patterns, often associated with certain cultural or traditional garments (like tartans or plaid).

The camellia pattern tile panel, dating from 1660-1680 and from the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Esperança in Lisbon, is part of the National Tile Museum's collection. This modular pattern, catalogued by Santos Simões, features stylized floral motifs, with central camellias or peonies, surrounded by plant elements and volutes. The polychromatic palette, with a predominance of blue, yellow and green on a white background, reflects the influence of Chinese porcelain and Italian Renaissance ceramics, adapted to the Portuguese tradition. This example illustrates the structuring role of tiles in 17th century architecture, particularly in religious buildings, and represents Lisbon's tile production prior to the popularization of blue and white, demonstrating the creativity of Portuguese ceramists in fusing influences and asserting their own identity.

Museu Nacional do Azulejo

The west end of Glasgow has some beautiful examples of tenement close tiles, many still in very good condition - these are from Hyndland and Partick. #tiles #tiledesign #tenement #tenements #tenementtiles #decorativearts #decorativetiles #glasgow #westendglasgow #glasgowwestend #hyndland #partick

Lalgarh Palace in Bikaner, Rajasthan was built for Sir Ganga Singh, Maharaja of Bikaner, between 1902 and 1926.

The palace was built between 1902 and 1926 in the Indo-Saracenic style. The building was commissioned by the British-controlled regency for Maharaja Ganga Singh (1881–1942) while he was still in his minority as they considered the existing Junagarh Fort unsuitable for a modern monarch. Ganga Singh decided that the palace should be named in memory of his father Maharaja Lall Singh.

The Bibi-Khanym Mosque is one of the most important monuments of Samarkand. In the 15th century it was one of the largest and most magnificent mosques in the Islamic world. By the mid-20th century only a grandiose ruin of it still survived, but major parts of the mosque were restored during the Soviet period.

The huge Bibi-Khanym Mosque with its three domed rooms, the covered galleries and the open courtyard was intended to gather the entire male population of Samarkand city for the joint Friday prayers. The interiors of the mosque contain gilding, imitating local brocade embroideries. Bibi-Khanym mosque was one of the most ambitious architectural projects of the Timurid period and influenced the architecture of Central Asia as well as of Iran and Afghanistan.

A fabulous piece of Glasgow tenement tilework from Hillhead in the west end of the city - in all the time I’ve been photographing tiles, I’ve never seen this style before and in such great condition too. 😄#glasgow #tenement #tenementtiles #decorativetiles #hillhead #glasgowwestend #westendglasgow #tiles #tiledesign #glasgowtenement #photography

The Shah-i-Zinda Ensemble includes mausoleums and other ritual buildings of 9-14th and 19th centuries. The name Shah-i-Zinda (meaning "The living king") is connected with the legend that Kusam ibn Abbas, a cousin of the Prophet Muhammad, is buried here. He came to Samarkand with the Arab invasion in the 7th century to preach Islam. Popular legends speak that he was beheaded for his faith, but he didn't die, took his head and went into the deep well (Garden of Paradise), where he's still living now.

The Shah-i-Zinda complex was formed over eight (from 11th till 19th) centuries and now includes more than twenty buildings.

In a World of ETERNITY..

Feeling the closeness of one to the other.

The softness of her skin.. against the warmth coming from his lips..

feeling each other breath.

There ... in their own kingdom of LOVE, in their united inner quiet.. The SOUND of LOVE, can be heard...

... YES, She's Hearing his heart beats..

Their hands interlocked one to another, touching each other hair.

A burst of color radiates from the façade of this LX Factory building in Lisbon, transforming the urban streetscape into an eye-popping optical experience. Composed of countless miniature patterns, logos, and cultural references, this mural swirls outward like a psychedelic vortex of Portuguese tile motifs, digital culture, and street art flair. The composition distorts perspective, drawing the viewer into its mesmerizing gravitational pull. Nestled in the creative heart of Lisbon’s Alcântara district, LX Factory is known for its vibrant mix of art, fashion, food, and design—and this artwork is a perfect reflection of the neighborhood’s experimental, energetic, and unfiltered soul.

A gem from one of the more intriguing shops tucked away in Triana, Sevilla (Seville) - a copy of an old pattern sheet from a catalogue of the wonderful tiling the city is famous for. Although dated to c1950, to be honest the pattern and layout go back centuries and are typical of the amazing ceramic tiles of southern Spain, often showing strong Moorish influence.

Blue and silver etched glass knob and pull cabinet hardware. One of a kind art glass handles for kitchen and bathroom designs. Stunning on furniture too.

If blood will flow when flesh and steel are one

Drying in the colour of the evening sun

Tomorrow’s rain will wash the stains away

But something in our minds will always stay

Perhaps this final act was meant

To clinch a lifetime’s argument

That nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could

For all those born beneath an angry star

Lest we forget how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall

Like tears from a star like tears from a star

On and on the rain will say

How fragile we are how fragile we are

On and on the rain will fall

Like tears from a star like tears from a star

On and on the rain will say

How fragile we are how fragile we are

How fragile we are how fragile we are

Since we are fragile… Let the COLOURS Rule your HEART- ART…

When young, a man may wish to carry his beloved woman... To feel her body, with it's weight.. warmth.. LIFE. To feel the belonging to one another, with it's significance.

Some grow older still may wish to do so...

As the years goes by, and the weight might change, as well as the body, or the emotions... The task might be different... Perhaps more difficult to carry. Perhaps deeper in EMOTIONS.

In this painting, I wish to deal not only with the physical aspect of what is seen here..

But far more behind the thought...

The ability to carry each other, as one is... With it's FULL MEANING.

May you be able to see the light in your life and those that are real in your world... and even more to appreciate it.

With love,

Happy Valentine's day!
