Today’s #ThrowBackThursday photo takes us all the way back to 1900 to the site of the old Empire mill right outside of present-day Long Barn on the North Fork Tuolumne River. The mill at Empire was founded by S. S. Bradford (yes, the guy with a street and building named after him in Sonora) who was likely one of the most prosperous and influential citizens of Sonora. Bradford had so much influence that they not only named a street and building after him, but they also altered the plans of the new county courthouse so that it would face his property.
Thanks to his background experience in logging and sawmill operation, as well as some extra capital, Bradford got an early jump on logging in Tuolumne County. By 1900, Bradford was dominating the local lumber industry. Even before the rail lines made their way out into what would become the Stanislaus National Forest, Bradford had already set up a mill and was running loads of lumber from deep in the forest all the way to Sonora. The twenty-eight-mile haul from the mill to Sonora was pulled by long line animal teams as shown in this week’s photo.
The load in the photo is said to contain 14,656 board feet of lumber. It looks and sounds impressive, but what does that mean? How many houses could that build? Thanks to the Stanislaus National Forest Timber and Silviculture folks, we know that a good rule of thumb when considering construction is that 6.3 board feet are required for every square foot of a house. So, a 1,000 square foot home would need 6,300 board feet to complete, while 12,600 board feet would be necessary for a 2,000 square foot home. Given that, a single load from Bradford’s Empire mill could provide enough lumber to build multiple houses!
Now for the fun part: Could one of these loads contain enough lumber for your house?

Dr. James M. Jackson was the first resident physician in Miami, arriving a few months before the city was incorporated. From 1905 – when he had the structure built – until 1916, Dr. Jackson maintained his office and surgery here. He later helped found the Miami City Hospital. When Dr. Jackson passed away in 1924, the Miami City Commission renamed Miami City Hospital the “James M. Jackson Memorial Hospital” in his honor.
Dr. Jackson’s surgery was relocated to its present location at 190 SE 12 Terrace in Brickell in 1916. On February 24, 1975, the structure was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, and is an excellent example of a Neo-Classical style architecture adapted to Miami’s climate. The building now houses the offices of the Dade Heritage Trust, and maintains a collection of historic medical devices which is open to the public.

Square photo of me at about 18 months old. I’m sitting on the faded red step outside my maternal grandparents’ house in Nottingham. My passport was stamped at Heathrow in late April 1973 and this looks like the spring or summer since the red door to the left behind me is open and I’m wearing a white shapeless dress with white socks and red shoes. There is a white kerchief with an indiscernible pattern covering my short blonde hair. My hands are in front of my mouth and I’m eating what appears to be a cherry Bakewell tart. There is half a tart with the distinctive cherry and white icing sitting on a white plate on the step on the right side beside 3 empty glass milk bottles. Behind them are some windows with white framing.
