I saw my first ruby throated hummingbird of 2019! He posed so nicely for me in the flowering tree in my backyard :-). He sat there for a while right next to my hummingbird feeder.

Spent the weekend using off camera flash (like the world famous Browns do). It took a while to get set up. Think it's a keeper. Shot at Bill's Back Yard Bird Blind.

One more post from our Alaska travels. We found this Red-throated Loon on a small pond just outside Nome.

From the Cornell Lab:

Red-throated Loons are among the finest fish hunters in North America, and perhaps the most graceful of all loons. They are smaller and more slender than other loons, with a smaller bill that they characteristically hold tipped slightly upward. In summer, they are a soft gray with neat stripes and a russet patch on the neck. Like other loons they dive for fish from the surface, but may also hunt from the air. They fly swiftly and are able to stall, pivot, and drop with almost falconlike precision.

White-throated Sparrows are common migratory summer breeders here, but not so common in winter. It should be in warmer climes by now. This one is existing in a feeder location in a park here along with the winter regulars.

The yellow-throated toucan (ramphastos ambiguus) is a Near Threatened species of bird in the family Ramphastidae, the toucans, toucanets, and aracaris. It is found from Honduras south into northern South America and beyond to Peru. Subspecies "Chestnut-mandibled" toucan, R. a. swainsonii - from southwestern Colombia on the eastern slope of the Andes to south-central Peru. The "chestnut mandibled" R. a. swainsonii primarily inhabits lowland evergreen primary forest and also occurs in gallery forest, older secondary forest, and well-treed parks and gardens. It is primarily a fruit eater, with small amounts of animal matter such as insects and other arthropods, small lizards, and the eggs and young of other birds.

Yellow-throated Toucan is a large, black and yellow toucan most notable for its massive, bicolored bill. It occurs from southeastern Honduras south to western Ecuador, where it occurs in the lowlands and lower montane regions, and again from western Venezuela south to Peru, where it is more restricted to lower montane forests. These two populations also differ slightly in bill color: the bill of the northern population is yellow and dark chestnut, whereas the bill of the Andean birds is yellow black; formerly, some authors classified these as separate species ("Chestnut-mandibled" and "Black-mandibled" toucan, respectively). Additional study is needed to assess the species limits within R. ambiguus. Across its large geographic range, Yellow- throated Toucan is notable for its yelping, far-carrying cry (described by locals as Dƭos te dƩ). It is largely frugivorous, but like other toucans, occasionally feeds on insects, lizards, and the eggs of other birds. The nesting habits of Yellow-throated Toucan are little known, and although pit is hunted in many areas, it remains fairly common throughout most of its range.

A lingering White-Throated Sparrow in St Louis, Missouri. These handsome winter residents will soon leave for their northern breeding grounds. We don't look forward to winter, but we will certainly look forward to seeing them again next fall.

A yellow-throated warbler from our trip to Florida last week. At first sight I thought it was a magnolia warbler but after checking more closely determined what it was. A lifer for me. This colorful little bird was feeding on ants in the mangroves of Ding Darling nature preserve.

An image of a Yellow-throated Vireo taken last weekend at Yarmouth Natural Heritage area in Sparta, Ontario.

I was watching for a brood of young ducks I had just seen when this fine fellow landed on a branch right in front of me. I had to shorten my focal length down to capture a good shot. Luckily he seemed undisturbed by me and stayed perched for awhile allowing me to get many good shots.

Thanks for viewing and have a great weekend!!

Many thanks to all who take the time to view, comment and favoring my images. Enjoy the day.

The spiderweb used by hummingbirds is sticky, of course, so the lichens stick to the web and are also caught beneath overlapping strands of silk. The female collects the silk strands of spiderweb and winds them around plant parts and lichens and then fills the cup with plant down. In spring, female hummingbirds are often seen hovering in the eaves and roof overhangs of houses, where they are probably collecting spiderwebs and, perhaps, also dining on small spiders.

Hello everyone. Sorry been away for a while - been busy out in the filed taking pics of kingfishers in flight. This WTKF is a residence at the botanic garden and was able to visit him daily. Very friendly birdie. Have not been happy with the IQ of inflight shots. So been experimenting and more to share later.

Thank you my friends for popping by.

I really appreciate your visits, comments & favourites.

Wishing all my Flickr friends a beautiful weekend.
