Maybe this image I saw on New Years Day 2020 was a foretelling of the year to come. On a blustery cold morning, in an inhospitable environment, isolated from all other forms of life and exposed to the elements of freezing temperatures, snow and howling winds, this lone juniper not only survives, it thrives.
With no eyes to appreciate its view of the West Temple, nor grow fearful over its precarious perch 1000' over the tunnel entry below, this lone tree grows tenaciously reaching toward the heavens, even though that exposes it to the dangers even more.
Isn't that what life is really all about?

Ghent is a city located in Belgium and it is the capital of the East Flanders province. Ghent is a city of history. During the Middle Ages, it was one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe. It was once considered the second largest city north of the alps, after Paris. The impact of this rich past can be clearly seen when viewing the imposing architecture of churches and the houses of rich traders. The whole of the city center is restored in this fashion, and still breathes the atmosphere of a thriving late-medieval city state. As the city council made the center free of cars, it is now a very welcoming and open area, which does not fail to impress even the people who live there.

The trail To Siffleur Falls, Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve, Alberta Canada. The reserve protects fragile montane habitats and vast grassland and forests, where many species of rare plants and other wildlife thrive.
Carcassonne is a fortified French town in the Aude department, of which it is the prefecture, in the Region of Occitanie.
Occupied since the Neolithic period, Carcassonne is located in the Aude plain between two major thoroughfares linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean sea and the Massif Central to the Pyrénées. Its strategic importance was quickly recognized by the Romans who occupied its hilltop until the demise of the Western Roman Empire and was later taken over in the fifth century by the Visigoths who founded the city. Also thriving as a trading post due to its location, it saw many rulers who successively built up its fortifications, until its military significance was greatly reduced by the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659.
The city is famous for the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress restored by the theorist and architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in 1853 and added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.
Third instalment of the series. Fallen trees are often difficult to ignore when looking for images in woodland but getting a decent image not so easy. The conditions being what they were did help to give me something I thought worthwhile sharing this time.
It was home to the Winter Olympics in both 1932 and 1980, taking advantage of the area's thriving cold weather sports culture. The legendary 1980 “Miracle On Ice” hockey match between the USA and the USSR took place in Lake Placid. Today, visitors can explore the Lake Placid Olympic Center and Museum
A striking, medium-sized bird found along the Pacific coast from southern British Columbia through California and into Baja California. About 27–31 cm long with a 39 cm wingspan, it is an easy to sight bird, active throughout the day in the countryside and even in the suburbs.
These birds are commonly found in dry shrublands, oak woodlands, chaparral, and suburban yards, often in proximity to oaks. Omnivorous, they feed on insects and fruit in spring and summer and shift to nuts and seeds, especially acorns, in fall and winter.
These birds - like Acorn Woodpeckers - have a symbiotic relationship with Acorns. They cache acorns and retrieve it later, helping them thrive in diverse environments. That caching also helps in seed dispersal and helps the Oak trees spread across the areas.

A week on now and this young one (of three - all doing well) is thriving and showing the first signs of that unique mask.
A thriving group of Common Bonnets (Mycena galericulata) covered a thick fallen tree branch all over. This is a widespread species of fungi belonging to a big Mycena family. The genus name “Mycena” originates from the ancient Greek work” mykes” meaning “fungus”. The scientific epithet “galericulata” comes from the Latin word ‘galer’ which is be translated as ‘helmet’ or ‘hat’. If you compare its small cap with the length of the stem it sits on – it is indeed an elegant ‘fungus with a small hat’. Their appearance also reflected in other names like the ‘helmeted high-stool’, the ‘togue mycena’, and the ‘rosy-gill fairy helmet’. A rosy colour refers to the tint of the gills these fungi could develop when aged. Beechwood fungi. Lansdown near Bath, BANES, Somerset, England UK.

Nezahualcóyotle (1402-1472 CE), the ruler of Texoco, is said to have been the founder of the Jardín Botánico de Chapultepec. He would not have known this exotic plant flowering in the garden today: Kalanchoe pumila, a Stonecrop, hails from central Madagascar - its name derives from China -, but it thrives wonderfully in the climate of Mexico City.
The left inset has a sculpture of Xochipilli, the Patron of Flowers, Tlalmanalco. He is associated with the hallucinogenic qualities of plants. On the right is a flowering plant from Techinantitla.
Besides a ruler, Nezahualcóyotle was also a patron of the arts and himself a poet. His pre-christian work has endured and a poem of his is printed on the 100-peso note of the Bank of Mexico. its English translation (according to Wikipedia) is:
'I love the song of the mockingbird,
Bird of four hundred voices,
I love the color of jade
And the enervating scent of the flowers,
But I love most my brother, man.'

This is one example of the decaying grandeur of an old Soviet spa in Georgia.
In the 1920s, Tskaltubo was a thriving spa town with an exclusively Soviet clientele. Citizens would flock here as part of a state-funded health program on sanctioned vacations meant to reenergize them while they contemplated socialist ideals. If the workers were healthy, as the theory went, the workforce would be healthy and thus more productive to support the regime.
