Washed about 10g of Cormo, and flicked and spun a couple handfuls of locks. I doubt this was much more than 2 or 3g, I still have plenty left out of the pile of washed locks. Spun it up into threadlike singles very easily, though to tell the truth I think I would have been happier with the standard flyer on my Lendrum rather than the fast flyer, because I felt like I was putting too much twist into it by treadling at my default speed.

Silverfish are one of the more common pest issues we hear about. Silverfish can average ½-3/4” in length excluding the tail or threadlike antenna. As the name implies, they are a silvery or gray color with an elongated body that tapers at the end.

 

These pests are more than annoying. They can eat away at cherished books, photographs or get into the seasonal clothing you had packed away in cardboard boxes. In the kitchen they can eat flour, sugar and bread among other dry good pantry staples. All these items should be stored in well-sealed air tight containers. Check items in the attic that you may have forgotten about or in the garage where we sometimes tend to “set it and forget it”. Once silverfish, or other pests for that matter, find a good undisturbed food source, they will happily remain unless conditions change. Now would be a good time to remove those cardboard boxes you’ve been keeping in the garage and change them out to plastic bins with airtight lids.

 

High humidity levels in the home will also keep silverfish flourishing. Did you know silverfish can survive for weeks without food or water as long as they can remain in an environment of 70-90% humidity?

 

How did they come into your home? Sometimes silverfish are brought in through unintentional transmission. These pests are sometimes brought in with cardboard boxes or other stored items not being held in airtight containers. They can also find their way in by climbing up walls and finding entry points around window or door frames, or even plumbing accesses or air vents.

 

To avoid an infestation of silverfish in your home, remember to:

 

Store paper and dry goods/food products in airtight containers

 

Use a dehumidifier in the home if needed

 

Check and seal open entryways of the home where small pests can find their way in

 

Repair leaky pipes/faucets

 

Have a licensed professional inspect and treat for active infestations

Trientalis latifolia

PACIFIC STARFLOWER. Small, fat, pink, star-shaped flowers on long, threadlike pedicels. Trail 1, first redwood grove.

It has solitary flowers with four or more very narrow greenish filiform (threadlike) petals and green petaloid sepals. The flower is borne above a single whorl of four or more stem leaves. It prefers calcareous soils and lives in damp and shady places, especially old established woods and streamsides. It occurs locally in temperate and cool areas throughout Europe and Asia but is absent in the wild from the Americas, Africa and the southern hemisphere. In Britain it is more frequently found in the east of the country but it is uncommon throughout its range. Each plant only produces one, blueberry-like fruit, which is poisonous.

some knitting I started the other night. Yarn is a plyed hand dyed and handspun yarn. It's so skinny it's almost threadlike.

Description:

Katydids have large hind legs and are distinguished by their extremely long, threadlike antennae and the thick, upwardly curved ovipositor (egg-laying structure) of the females. Often large and green, many katydids have long wings, but some common species are nearly wingless.

Erin and I took a cruise on Doubtful Sound (longest fiord in Fiordland National Park on the South Island of New Zealand). The weather was snow interspersed with hail interspersed with freezing rain interspersed with biblical winds. There were many impressive, long, threadlike waterfalls. This is one.

A few months ago I came upon a new word. In and of itself, this isn't and extraordinary occurrence. but unlike other words, this one has stuck with me. Its not even a word from my language or one which I know has a synonym. This Anishinabbe word is puhpowee and refers to the force that causes Mushrooms to push up from the earth, An unseen energy, giving them the power to move soil, stones and even pavement.

 

This hydraulic pressure comes from the turgor pressure of the cells that make up the stalk of the mushroom. The cells of mushrooms also contain chitin, which when arranged the way it is in a mushrooms, makes the cell walls strong and confines the internal pressure in a vertical column. Chitin is the same material invertebrates (insects , Lobsters, etc) use for their exoskeletons. Its a tough material. The presence of chitin is in the fungal Kingdom and the animal kingdom but not in the plant kingdom is one bit of evidence that fungi and animals are more closely related to each other than to plants. This is not terribly relevant to most of us, but could it have implications for Vegetarians?

 

In addition, most mushrooms can sense gravity. many, if picked and placed on their side, will reorient their caps to be vertical. Ammonite species are fast at doing this.

 

The most common species people observe that move paving stones and ash fault are the Coprinus species (Ink Caps-Shaggy Mane). They grow on buried plant matter. It is indeed amazing that something so delicate and fragile to the touch can push through a few inches of ashphalt. The fruit of the Coprinus species are short lived. Within a day or two, they dissolve into a black watery mess called deliquescence. This phenomenon is what gives them the common name inky cap.

 

Mushrooms are the fruiting body of fungi, analogous to fruit on a tree. But keep in mind they are not closely related to plants. They do not photosynthesize. Instead, they make their living in a variety of ways. Some, like the Coprinus and Agaricus species are decomposers of plant matter and like to grow in compost piles, lawns and meadows.Some decompose animals. Others decompose dead trees and logs. Some grow on or in living trees. A large number grow under ground and are attached to the roots of living plants, in a relationship that benefits the plant and the fungus. The fungus passes minerals and water to the plants and gets the carbohydrates it needs from the plants. This allows the plants to grow in sub-optimal conditions, such as under the canopy or on dry hillsides. This group is called corrhizal and contains some of our most disirable edibles, such as chanterelles and pine mushrooms.

 

Western Science has, for the most part, had a mechanistic view of nature--looking at aspects of nature isolation (reductionism) in an effort to understand the whole by understanding the parts, like studying the puzzle pieces to understand the whole picture. The modern science of ecology, and certainly traditional Ecological Knowledge, sees the connection between things (living and non-living, but also processes) as essential. As John Muir put it "when we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe" Fungi illustrates this in a wonderful way. For most of the year, they are hidden, tiny threadlike filaments under the soil or in logs. But when presented with favourable moisture and temperatures, they fruit quickly and make their presence known. Puhpowee---emerging magically and making every fall walking the woods a new experience. Note: I learned the word puhpowee from Robin Kimmerer in her book: Braiding Sweetgrass--Indigenous wisdom, Scientific Knowledge and the teaching of plants

Cosmos bipinnatus, commonly called the garden cosmos or Mexican aster, is a medium-sized flowering herbaceous plant native to Mexico. The species and its varieties and cultivars are popular as an ornamental plant in temperate climate gardens. It can also be found in natural areas in much of North America, where it is a garden escape (introduced species) and in some habitats becoming a weed.

 

Cosmos bipinnatus is considered a half-hardy annual, although plants may reappear via self-sowing for several years. The plant height varies from 2–4 ft (0.61–1.2 m). The cultivated varieties appear in shades of pink and purple as well as white. Its foliage is finely cut into threadlike segments. When flowering, the plant can become top heavy. This problem is alleviated when grown in groups, as the bipinnate leaves interlock, and the colony supports itself.

I chanced upon this fly seemingly enjoying the softiness of some thistle down, (the threadlike hairs that propel the seeds in the wind).

Taken in the wooded ravine area that lies to the northeast of the main parking lot.

 

After photographing the top of its pileus or cap—see Part 4 of this set—I picked up this Old Man of the Woods mushroom and lay it on the oak-leaf litter so that its pores were revealed. It’s that feature that distinguishes this species, Strobilomyces strobilaceus, and its fellow members of the Boletaceae (Bolete Family) from normal gilled mushrooms.

 

I did not collect this specimen, but in plucking it out of its tight confines under a fallen log I did give it a chance to spread its spores far and wide. And that’s a good thing, because Old Man boletes are mycorrhizal. In other words, they form mutualistic associations with the roots of oaks and other hardwood trees.

 

Let’s push the mycological terminology a bit further. S. strobilaceus is specifically ectomycorrhizal. That means that its hyphae or threadlike subterranean tissues grow around their host trees’ root hairs and form a jacket that both protects them from pathogens and dramatically increases their uptake of nutrients from the soil.

 

There are other fungi that enter into an even more intimate partnership with plants. These endomycorrhizal species actually penetrate directly into the roots’ cell walls to perform the same task. The plants get more needed substances from the soil and in turn the fungi are rewarded with sugars manufactured in the leaves.

 

In some mycorrhizal associations—in many orchid species, for example—the fungal component is so important that the plant can simply not live without it. That’s probably not the case in this oak forest. Nevertheless, the Old Man and other mushrooms found here do a great deal to increase the vigor and longevity of the trees.

 

This longstanding alliance between two organisms we foolishly think are utterly distinct and separate really makes me wonder. As does the bacterial flora in our own digestive systems that, we now know, are so crucial to our continued health. What one living thing is just one living thing? Are all singular pronouns an illusion? I am not just I. You are not just you. Rather, we are walking, talking, mega-member mutual-aid societies.

 

Alas, these societies are under attack from an array of industrial pollutants that are much more prevalent than we previously supposed. From alarming accumulations of microplastics in our brains to endocrine disruptors found wherever one looks for them on land in the ocean, we have done a magnificent job of poisoning ourselves and everyone else.

 

All that grimly noted, I intend in the time remaining before the toxins do me in to explore the mycorrhizal world much more deeply. My description above is a sketchy, filmy prelude to a subject of much more complexity. As I am discovering in the following:

It is always interesting to me to see just what the cucumber plants will decide to grab. In this case, it wrapped itself around this tomato cage multiple times. These arms are called "tendrils", defined as "a slender threadlike appendage of a climbing plant, often growing in a spiral form, that stretches out and twines around any suitable support." If I learned this word, I had forgotten it.

 

These photos are from the summer of 2013 when I was mostly confined to backyard photography after having arthroscopic hip surgery to repair my labrum.

Cast in resin or wax rather than pressed or preserved, this outsized bloom belongs to the plant corridor's small run of hyper-magnified flower models, built at a scale no living specimen could survive being handled at. The trumpet's interior runs from deep magenta at the throat to a pale blush near the flared lip, with slender stamens dangling on threadlike filaments, each capped with a swollen anther that reads almost insectile against the dark backdrop.

 

Models like this exist because certain flowers are simply too fragile, too seasonal, or too geographically remote to keep on permanent display as pressed or freeze-dried specimens. A hand-built replica solves that problem while allowing for a scale increase that pressed botany never could, turning a bloom that might span a few inches into something the size of a dinner plate, legible from across the hall.

 

Shooting straight into the throat of the trumpet, with the ambient gallery light falling steeply from one side, lets the gradient do the work: the pink deepens into shadow exactly where the actual anatomy would recede from view.

Bat flower, Cairns Botanical Gardens.

 

Native to southern parts of Asia, bat flower (Tacca spp.) has shiny, bright green leaves. It blooms on a stem from the center of the plant, with a cluster of purple flowers in the center. Above these flowers are two bracts (leaves that resemble flower petals) that look like bat wings. Numerous threadlike bracteoles hang from the flowers resembling 8-10 inch long whiskers.

 

Most common is the black bat flower (Tacca chantrieri); its wing-like bracts are a deep purple. A more recently introduced species, white bat flower (Tacca integrifolia) has white "wings."
