I just love this old rickety wonky house and keep going back to see if its fallen down or demolished but no, I'm still standing.

This abandoned house located next to a subdivision and golf course just off of Camp Phillips Road in the Marathon County countryside outside of Wausau, Wisconsin is another place that I find myself returning to over and over again.

This ole house once knew his children

This ole house once knew his wife

This ole house was home and comfort

As they fought the storms of life

This ole house once rang with laughter

This ole house heard many shouts

Now he trembles in the darkness

When the lightnin' walks about

While processing this photo, I couldn't help but think about the song "This Ole House". The words are printed below:

"This song was written one cold wintry day in the High Sierra mountain range when I was on a hunting trip. With a hunting companion, I had gone back into a remote section of the country. We were at least twenty miles from the nearest road when we came upon a old prospector's cabin. Although there was snow on the ground there was no smoke coming from the chimney, but I knew the master was at home because a large hound dog was lying on the front porch. Upon entering, we found an old man dead in a back room. I can't say how long he had been dead, for he looked like he was just asleep, but because of the severe weather it might have been some time, and the old hound was nearly starved. 'This Ole House' was the prospector's epitaph." —Stuart Hamblin

This Ole House once knew my children

This Ole House once knew my wife

This Ole House was home and comfort

As we fought the storms of life

This Ole House once rang with laughter

This Ole House heard many a-shout

Now she trembles in the darkness

When the lightnin' walks about.

CHORUS - But, I ain't gonna need this house no longer

Ain't gonna need this house no more

Ain't got time to fix the shingles

Ain't got time to fix the floor

Ain't got time to oil the hinges

Or to mend no window pane

Ain't gonna need this house no longer

I'm a-gettin' ready to meet the saints.

This Ole House Is a-gettin' shaky

This Ole House it's gettin' old

This Ole House lets in the rain

This Ole House lets in the cold

On my knees I'm gettin' chilly

But I feel no fear nor pain

'Cause I see an angel peekin'

Through a broken window pane.

My ole hound dog lies a-sleepin'

He don't know I'm gonna leave

Else he'd wake up by the fireplace

He'd just sit there an' howl and grieve

But my huntin' days are over

We ain't goin' huntin' any more

Gabriel done brought in my chariot

When the wind blew down the door.

ODC2 - Lyrics/Poetry inspired. Only seemed one song to fit the bill for me today, just added a couple of verses to the image. While lifting some old floorboards this old photo showed up and the Lady next door was able to tell me that these two Springer Spaniels lived there about twenty five years ago, and the photo was taken in the garden. Its really nice to find out about the history of the cottage, seeing it in the state it is, its also nice to know it was a happy home once with two lovely spaniels sharing it.

The moment I saw this old house it cried out to be a song and what better song than This Ole house. My old house is just meant for this song.

This Ole House (sometimes written This Old House) is a popular song written by Stuart Hamblen, and published in 1954. Rosemary Clooney's version reached the top of the popular music charts in both the US and the UK in 1954. The song again topped the UK chart in 1981 in a recording by Shakin' Stevens.

The true story behind the song This Ole House:

Stuart Hamblin - "This song was written one cold wintry day in the High Sierra mountain range when I was on a hunting trip. With a hunting companion, I had gone back into a remote section of the country. We were at least twenty miles from the nearest road when we came upon a old prospector's cabin. Upon entering, we found an old man dead in a back room. I can't say how long he had been dead, for he looked like he was just asleep, but because of the severe weather it might have been some time, and the old hound was nearly starved. This Ole House was the prospector's epitaph."

The former Hotel Bahnhof and buffet at Flums station lives up to its current name. Based on the song "This Ole House" it is now called Rocki Docki. Switzerland, Aug 23, 2021.

Please View Large Rosemary Clooney is probably the best-known singer of 'This ole house", but I don't think anyone can match the down-home style of the Cathedrals in this version (it's worth the listen!):www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9PKehvGA6g

this could be a rural farm scene with only a dirt road leading to town 20 miles away.... and once it was. Things have changed, not necessarily for the best, as the map will show.

An old derelict house, on a side street in Bangor's town centre, County Down, Northern Ireland - I loved the textures in this old building, especially the graininess of the boarded up windows so I processed the shot through HDR software to accentuate them.

Frith-Plunkett House, built circa 1850 - Des Arc, Arkansas. Architect unknown. The architectural style is Greek Revival, and it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The glass in the windows was blown out by a tornado several years ago. The current owner plans to eventually restore it.

This house was standing at Des Arc during the Civil War. No battles were fought at Des Arc, only several skirmishes, but the overall effects of the War devastated the town.

:::

I lived in this house from 1979 to 1995. I now live across the street. The house was struck by lightning in June. As you will see from the pictures in this set, it is, despite its proud strightness and good foundation, getting ready to meet the saints. When I saw the bared maple tree silhouetted against these stormy clouds tonight, I could almost hear Rosemary Clooney's voice singing as I heard her when I was eleven.

I guess it was a huge hit for Rosemary Clooney (George's Aunt) but my mind only hears Larry Hooper singing it on the Lawrence Welk Show. (My folks watched that show religiously.)
