Ya de vuelta de un maravilloso viaje por Islandia. La isla de Hielo y Fuego es un destino de naturaleza intensa que sobrecoge a quien la visita
Besides being one of the most beautiful and amazing national parks, it has an interesting history. “It was at Þingvellir - which translates directly to ‘the fields of parliament’ - where most of the major turns in Iceland’s history started to occur. For example, it was here that the nation abandoned Asatru, the Old Norse pagan belief system, in lieu of Christianity in 1000 AD, due to the threat of Norwegian invasion. Nearly a millennium later, in 1944 AD, it is where Icelanders declared their independence from Denmark and confirmed their first President. Þingvellir is the original site of the world’s longest running, still ongoing parliament.
Because of its history, Þingvellir became a National Park in 1930, and in 2004, it was accepted as part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.”
A walk between the North American and Eurasian Tectonic Plates in Iceland. It's also the northern end of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This is part of the iconic rift valley on The Golden Circle. It's where Iceland's parliament (Althing) started meeting in 930. The light rain had broke just before I got there which was enough to keep the crowds down. Thingvellir (þhingvellir) National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. #Iceland #ThingvellirNationalPark
Icelandic landscape near Thingvellir National Park, where hot springs and a rift valley denounce the intense volcanic activity going on hidden under rock, ice and snow.

Iceland's largest lake located within Thingvellir National Park and Iceland's volcanic rift valley during a mellow sunset on a very cold winter day. In the foreground there are the typical textures of the rift valley lava fields, just covered by some snow.
Spellbound...how one feels when looking out across this view of Iceland’s Thingvellir National Park....

Iceland's Thingvellirvatn lake partially frozen and surrounded by virginal snow, a wonderful sight to my eyes :)
Thingvellir National Park in Southwest Iceland with its vast stretches of wilderness, in summer endless lava fields, in winter an apparent ice desert. The setting sun was beautifully highlighting the structures and wind patterns in the snow.

Thingvellir National Park in Iceland where the first parliament met in 930. This is where the Eurasian and North American Tectonic Plates meet. It is a divergent plate boundary. There's also a path where you can walk between them. #Iceland #ThinvellirNationalPark #TectonicPlates #DivergentBoundary

Visiting Iceland was a longtime dream that came true just last week....such incredible beauty! “Þingvellir (Thingvellir) is a historic site and national park in Iceland, east of Reykjavík. It's known for the Alþing (Althing), the site of Iceland's parliament from the 10th to 18th centuries. On the site are the Þingvellir Church and the ruins of old stone shelters. The park sits in a rift valley caused by the separation of 2 tectonic plates, with rocky cliffs and fissures like the huge Almannagjá fault.”
