I have spent ages scouring fields for this bird's British cousin, the stone curlew. This one in Irene (between Johannesburg and Pretoria) walked out from behind a tree right in front of me just asking to be photographed.

The first, and possibly the last, time that I will make and ice sugar cookies. My vision of perfectly iced cookies didn't materialise. Nothing went right; dough not chilled enough, cookies too thick, first batch underbaked, second batch overbaked. Then came the icing, too stiff, then too runny!
At least I got a few that looked good enough for a photo for my last one in the scavenger hunt.

Set out with a 90% forecast of rain this morning, and the forecast was correct. The rain paused for a little while so I set out up a hill climbing 100 steps fought my way through thick very wet bush land out to this headland above one of my favourite tidal pools.

This species is an uncommon, but regular passage migrant and winter visitor in Ireland. It breeds in central Europe and Scandinavia, though a very small population breeds in northern Scotland.
The holidays at my place call for a thick skin. THIS year, a little extra leather is probably a good idea

A thick layer of snow clouds off the Isle of Man as 'The Beast from the East' arrived over the Irish Sea.
