Scenes from #TheWalkDownUnder on Google Plus 2012

Participated in the inaugural 2012 G+ photowalk yesterday. It was an early start (7am at Regatta Point) but it was a cracker of a start :-)

More from the Google Walk Down Under. I spotted this little guy swimming along near the docks. He's a "leather jacket" I'm told. But hey, I'm no fish expert!

I just loved how his little dorsal fin was producing such a pretty wake.

Early morning serenity in the heart of Melbourne.

我 一 輩 子 都 找 不 到 親 愛 的 人 了

Hooray for the American entrepreneurs who made a *#$&ing boatload of money king's ransom in a little less than two years!

Remember this day.

The upstart 551-day-old Instagram is worth $1 billion.

The venerable 116-year-old New York Times Co., $967 million.

Anyone see anything wrong with this picture?

If not, add this to the equation: Instagram has yet to produce any revenue, or model for the same.

Like FaceBook, Instagram's value comes in having access to users' personal habits, information, including email address, location data and an entire array of other statistics - including location & movement tracking - which they in turn will use to entice advertisers.

In essence, YOU are the commodity.

As an aside, photos are a key driver of user "engagement," which is how long someone spends on Facebook. According to the research firm ComScore, the average FaceBook user spends 7.5 hours a month on the site, which is the highest of any social network.

Now, would someone please tell me why Flickr - which is a Social Media (SoMe) revolving around photos - doesn't seem to have the attention that others are generating? Or, are they on top of the game that others are hoping to compete in? They have, after all, led the way, and are producing revenue.

One thing I've found is that many people almost completely ignore the SoMe aspect of Flickr, and discount it as a "photographic" website, one that is "for" photographers... which, of course, is NOT so. There's plenty of porn here, too. What you make of Flickr depends upon how you choose to use it.

This bloke's sunglasses looked pretty interesting, and he agreed to a photo. Of course, silly me, and still a noob with the X-Pro-1, forgot about the parallax with the OVF and close subjects, and hence this slightly awkward framing. My reflection in his sunglasses was a bonus though

Kim attended #thewalkdownunder for Google+ in Brisbane. I took his photo while we were waiting for a ferry in Brisbane to take us to Southbank. He was there with his wife and the mood was quite festive as can be seen by his smile.

If you're interested, head on over to Google+ and search using the above hash tag to see all the events that took place across Australia that morning.

What initially caught my attention was the little ribbon of her hairband, and this pretty young lady, who works at one of the restaurants along Hardware Lane, was more than happy to have her photo taken. After having a quick chat with her, it turns out she does a bit of photography too, and also has a job at one of the camera stores in Melbourne.

Having already taken a photo of this man, I noticed his slicked back hair, the bit of stubble, the suit and thought a more serious look would suit him. It took a few goes though, since either him, or myself, or both of us couldn't stop laughing at the prospect.

A group of us took a coffee break from The Google Plus Walk Downunder on March 31st 2012. Kelli-Anne was visiting her mum from WA and decided to join in the walk since she is a photogrpaher. We all had a really good time & made some new friends.
