Vienna 2017
We came out of a Bar. The light was a soft yellow.
Jon stood in the shadows. All I had was an iphone.
are not so scarce
as I used to think.
It's splendid to find out
there are so many of them
in the world.
Anne of Green Gables
Jeanny, come on
Get up, please, you're getting wet.
It's late, come on.
Where's your shoe? You lost it
When I had to show you the way
Who lost it? You?
Me? Or, or we each other?
It's cold, we have to leave. Come on.
Your lipstick is smudged.
You bought it and I saw it.
Too much red on your lips, and you said
"Don't hit on me"
But you were sussed, eyes speak louder than words
You need me, huh?
Everybody knows we're together from today
# Now I can hear them, they're coming #
They're coming for you
They won't find you
Nobody's gonna find you, you're with me
Jeanny, quit livin' on dreams
Jeanny, life is not what it seems
"In recent months, the number of missing persons has risen dramatically
The latest release from the local police department reports another tragic case
It concerns a nineteen-year-old girl who was last seen a fortnight ago
Police are not ruling out the possibility that this was a crime"
Jeanny, quit livin' on dreams
Jeanny, life is not what it seems
Jeanny, there's someone who needs you
Thank you Macz for coming with me into the Vienna sewerage
Watch her Jeanny

I am enjoying the flickrfriday challenge but was trying to come up with something for this weeks theme and as I was sitting on the riverbank this was my view. So this is a capture this evening across the lake as a father and his two sons were fishing. Casting in the dusk light as I listened to the father giving them advise and directions on casting the lines. The sun was low and the hues of golden light and fog in the sky can be seen when zoomed in.
It reminded me of the times I was privileged to spend time with my dad going fishing and as he taught me the things I needed to know to become a man.
So this is my interpretation of the theme #TheThirdMan for #flickfriday as the third man here is the Father and the other 2 are those who will one day become men too through guidance and nurture. (PS: My camera says the pic was taken at 00h15 but it is still on UK time while I am visiting the USA so the image was actually captured at 19h15)
German for Vienna Giant Wheel, or Riesenrad, is a 64.75-metre (212 ft) tall Ferris wheel at the entrance of the Prater amusement park in Leopoldstadt, the 2nd district of Austria's capital Vienna. It is one of Vienna's most popular tourist attractions, and symbolises the district as well as the city for many people. Constructed in 1897, it was the world's tallest extant Ferris wheel from 1920 until 1985.
The Wiener Riesenrad was constructed in 1897 by the English engineer Lieutenant Walter Bassett Bassett (1864-1907), Royal Navy, son of Charles Bassett (1834-1908), MP, of Watermouth Castle, Devon. Its purpose was to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Emperor Franz Josef I and it was one of the earliest Ferris wheels ever built. Bassett's Ferris wheel manufacturing business was not a commercial success and he died in 1907 almost bankrupt.
A permit for its demolition was issued in 1916, but because of a lack of funds with which to carry out the destruction, it survived.
It was built with 30 gondolas, but was severely damaged in World War II and when it was rebuilt only 15 gondolas were replaced.
The wheel is driven by a circumferential cable which leaves the wheel and passes through the drive mechanism under the base, and its spokes are steel cables, in tension.
The Riesenrad appeared in the post-World War II film noir "The Third Man" (1949)
The wheel is featured in the spy thriller "Scorpio" (1973)
The James Bond film, "The Living Daylights" features scenes throughout the Prater, around the wheel and a lengthy romantic scene on the wheel (1987).

Postcard in hand, I was reminded of that line Harry Lime spoke in "The Third Man" - "You know, I never feel comfortable on these sort of things. Victims? Don't be melodramatic. [gestures to people far below] Tell me. Would you really feel any pity if one of those dots stopped moving forever? If I offered you twenty thousand pounds for every dot that stopped, would you really, old man, tell me to keep my money, or would you calculate how many dots you could afford to spare? Free of income tax, old man. Free of income tax - the only way you can save money nowadays."
but obviously not from the third man boundary! Watched a cricket match today, much I would have liked to have taken a photo from the 3rd man boundary it would have proven too difficult to get everyone's permission. Rather during lunch I strolled out to bekind the wicket to catch these 3rd men, without the 3 wickets at either end it would not be much of a game of cricket!

Did anybody catch a glimpse of "The Third Man"???
Caught at the fun-fair in the Vienna Prater.
The famous film "The Third Man", made in bombed-out Vienna, contains a crucial scene acted in one of these gondolas on the Big Wheel.
With the Pentax Q I can carry a rucksack-full of fine and fun lenses in my pockets! That makes snapshots like this one more likely!
Lens: Pentax Q 06 Telephoto Zoom 15-45mm f:2.8
This excellent piece of equipment is no bigger than a box of 35mm film and weighs next to nothing. It consists of 14 elements in 10 groups, has an aperture of f:2.8 and a zoom range equivalent to 83-249mm in 35mm film format. The optical quality is astonishing!
On the tracks of the "Third Man" movie in Vienna. I had the opportunity to go down there with a handful others enjoying this exclusive photo tour. Thanks to Karl Füsselberger from WFS and Canon Austria I had an amazing weekend in one of my fav cities

This is an older shot that I have tinkered with slightly. I took so many pictures over several days of this production, and I am only now beginning to sort out the keepers from the "move to trash " shots.

Macro Mondays 21.06.2021 "Matchstick"
When it comes to history, we used to learn the dates of battles and victories, but it's often small details that truly bring a dry narrative to life.
These matches turned up only this year in a house in Lower Austria. The owner was complaining that it was difficult to get them to strike properly. How old they were, and where they had come from, she did not know, much less did she understand the double-meanings of the printed warnings.
These are matches that were issued to the US Armed Forces during the allied military occupation of Austria (1945-1955). "Fraternising" as they called it, was frowned on, but nonetheless a fact, and the health of the troops was of course of prime importance. The offer of a cigarette (American ones were sought after) was a usual opener, so what better place to print a word of caution than on a match-book!
The atmosphere of occupied Vienna in the immediate post-war years is well-captured in these videos:

Just to add another note of (photographic) history, I used a lens that in all probability also came to Austria during the years of occupation - from the USSR. In my camera collection there are two beautiful Russian Leica copies: a Zorki C and a "Zorki Zorki" (the name is engraved both in cyrillic and roman lettering) - this is the lens of the latter, an Industar-22 1:3.5 F=5cm. It's a collapsible lens, so when mounted on extension tubes (here on original Leica tubes from the early 1930s), it becomes a rather versatile macro with a good focal-range and excellent image-quality. (Camera: Sony A7C)
With the lighting I tried to create an atmosphere appropriate to the subject.
Erklärung: "V.D." ist die geläufige Bezeichnung für Geschlechtskrankheiten.
P.S. If you would like to see an excellent film that truly captures the atmosphere of Vienna in the years of allied occupation, I can highly recommend "The Third Man" by Graham Greene, with Orson Welles , Joseph Cotton and Trevor Howard in the leading roles.
