Welcome to the MGM Grand, the second largest hotel on the planet we inhabit, following only the Venetian Hotel several blocks away along Las Vegas Boulevard.

Originally, the main entrance on the Strip was inside the mouth of a giant cartoon-like version of MGM's mascot, Leo the Lion, but this entrance feature was changed to a more traditional entrance; many Chinese gamblers avoided the casino or entered through the back entrance, due to the feng shui belief that entering the mouth of the lion was "bad luck." In 1998, a large bronze statue of Leo was added above the entrance to keep with the MGM Lion theme, while not scaring away their more superstitious guests. The statue weighs 50 tons, and at 45 feet (14 m) tall, on a 25-foot pedestal, is the largest bronze statue in the U.S. [Source: Wikipedia.com]

Yashica Electro 35 GS | Kodak Portra 400

Images are from a roll of Kodak Porta 400 that I purposely over & under exposed. I shot from 200 - 1000 ISO on this roll and developed at box speed (400).

The overexposed images turned out great with very little PP needed. The underexposed required some PP.

Overall a good experiment for me to see what Portra 400 can do.

But who’s complaining? Visitors to the Paris Las Vegas resort will encounter charming service, honest taxi drivers and clean sidewalks - qualities too often lacking in the real-life Ville Lumière. Even French people might agree, as a widely-shared loathing of Parisians seems to unite the nation of more cheeses than there are days in the year.

36.2 Vegas Baby

Tuesday July 14, 2009

Phoenix, Arizona --> Las Vegas, Nevada

As he so often does, Jeremy sat casually glancing between map and itinerary, calculating travel approximations and tracing projected routes. It was during this study the recently cut plans for Vegas resurfaced with new-found enthusiasm throughout the van. Travel persisted through expansive Arizona emptiness, over a soft lit Hoover dam, to the casino capital of the world; Las Vegas baby! The ‘City that Never Sleeps’ (a title we took all too literally) was bursting with activity. Avid gambler and tourist alike ambled the crowded pathways littered with escort service call cards. Every color and assortment of flashing lights and neon signs imaginable polluted the barren sky. Enormous projection screens advertised upcoming must sees while music varieties permeated the streetscape. A fresh shirt, sunglasses and groomed staches we tackled the strip a casino at a time; from the scantily dressed dealers at Planet Hollywood to the romantic canals along the Venetian. A few dollars for penny slots were offset by the handing of several free beers. Jeremy seemed most capable of ringing in slight winnings but was equally skilled at blowing them soon thereafter. When all was said and done, complimentary drinks included, we all broke just shy of even. We u-turned at the vacant Riviera (frequented by my grandparents who always delivered their free decks for our family poker games) and proceeded to rest in the sports betting section of Caesar’s Palace observing the art of bow fishing displayed on the hunting channel. After a short-lived sitting at a Denny’s offering an inflated menu we ended our stay in Vegas at 6:00 AM. Jeremy took the helm of a van that had passed out before even leaving the parking lot. A jolt from the car and thunder from outlying rumble strip alerted the crew to a lethargic Jeremy regaining his bearings after veering over the yellow line and swerving inches from an innocent Mexican boy treading the median. Not but an hour out, we rolled into a nearby gas station, parked unprotected beneath the blazing sun, and returned to our states of slumber. After waking to a delirious Matt, sweat beads congregating along every ridge of his face, I inferred it best to keep moving rather than bake hopelessly in the desert heat. We then headed for Zion attempting to get back on schedule.

On June 20, 2008, Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay received a Komodo dragon from the Miami MetroZoo. He is currently at the Jungle Temple exhibit at the Aquarium.

The Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay is a public aquarium located at and owned by the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Its main tank is 1,300,000 US gallons (4,900,000 l), one of the largest in North America. The facility is 95,000 sq ft (8,800 m2), and displays numerous different species of sharks, rays, fish, reptiles, and marine invertebrates. It also features a shark tunnel.

The Shark Reef Aquarium is the only Nevada institution accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). While most aquariums are located close to the ocean, the Shark Reef is exceptional in that it is located in a desert, far from any natural water source.
