Since 1990, HPOWER (Honolulu Program of Waste Energy Recovery) has helped meet the energy needs on Oahu by using advanced technology to convert municipal garbage to energy, saving hundreds of acres of landfill space and more than 10 million barrels of imported oil. Located in the Campbell Industrial Park and operated by Covanta Energy Corporation in cooperation with the City and County of Hawaii, the HPOWER plant is for now the largest renewable energy project on Oahu and in the Hawaiian Islands.

Puna Geothermal Venture, now owned by Ormat Technologies, Inc. and located in the volcanically active southeast corner of Hawaii Island, “The Big Island”, has been providing up to 30 megawatts of power to Hawaii Electric Light Company for nearly 30 years and is now planning an expansion which will double its output in a few years. Along with three wind farms and run-of-the-river hydro, with biomass energy production on its way, PGV has helped Hawaii Island to achieve a renewable portfolio standard of nearly 40 percent, the highest percentage in the Hawaiian Islands.
